Abstract:The theoretical crisis of artificial intelligence exposed the limits of classical mathematical logic. At present, the second revolution of mathematical logic, which was revealed by the establishment of various nonclassical mathematical logics, have begun. In order to make all kinds of logic develop in the unified universal logics framework and provide the new logic foundation for AI, firstly , the general creed of this revolution was proposed to make some dialectical logic mathematicalized, and to establish flexible logics which contained various uncertainty, contradiction and evolvement; Secondly, regarding the general creed and four elements of logic, the concrete creed of the revolution was proposed and it was pointed out that the current important task was to establish flexible propositional logics, which was the footstone of the entire flexible logics. The flexible proposition logic, which could contain or generate various proposition logics, had been established regarding the creed.

Abstract:The logic of paradox LP proposed by Priest [1979] is one of paraconsistent logics. One of the motivations behind paraconsistent logic, namely LP, is that it should not be the case that everything follows from a single contradiction. It must pay a price, however, that some classical inferences would be invalid in LP. In Priest's recent invention, the logic of minimal paradox LPm can overcome the drawback, such that paraconsistent logic would be equivalent to classical logic when there is not direct effect of a contradiction. Although some proof theories for LP were introduced, there has not yet been a satisfactory proof theory for LPm. We will propose a sound and complete tableaux for LPm in this article.

Abstract:As a vision for the future of the Web, the Semantic Web is an open, constantly changing and collaborative environment. Hence it is reasonable to expect that knowledge sources in the Semantic Web contain noise and inaccuracies. However, as the logical foundation of Ontology Web Language in the Semantic Web, description logics fail to tolerate inconsistent information. The study of inconsistency handling in description logics is an important issue in the Semantic Web. One major approach to inconsistency handling is based on so-called paraconsistent reasoning, in which standard semantics is refined so that inconsistencies can be tolerated. Four-valued description logics are not satisfactory for the Semantic Web in that its reasoning is a bit far from standard semantics. In this paper, we present a paraconsistent description logic called paradoxical description logic, which is based on a three-valued semantics. Compared to existing paraconsistent description logics, our approach is more suitable for dealing with inconsistent ontologies in that paraconsistent reasoning under our semantics provides a better approximation to the standard reasoning. An important result in this paper is that we propose a sound and complete tableau for paradoxical description logics.

Abstract:G. Priest introduced nonmonotonicity into a paraconsistent logic, so-called logic of paradox LP, that yields a solution to the weakness of paraconsistent logic. The resulting logic (of minimal parades) LPm is nonmonotonic in the sense that inconsistency is minimal. The problem of proof theory of logic LPm left open because the base logic LP is paraconsistent so that syntactic formulations of nonmonotonic logic are not available for LPm, though LPm is well characterized by minimal semantics. In this paper, we provide a minimal tableaus as a satisfactory proof theory for LPm . We first present a signed tableaux for LP. Then minimal tableaux for LPm is obtained by revising signed tableaux for LP to fit LPm in which the branches of non-minimally-inconsistent models of the tableaux are eliminated. The soundness and completeness theorems of the tableaux with respect to the semantics of LP and LPm are proved, respectively

Abstract:As a development of classical nonmonotonic logic,argumentation logic(also called abstract argumentation theory,and formal argumentation,etc.) provides a general mechanism to handle the problems of inconsistency in various situations.It captures the common properties of various reasoning systems in a context of disagreement by using abstract arguments and attack relations,and defines the acceptability of arguments by establishing general evaluation criteria(called argumentation semantics).This makes argumentation logic generally applicable to various situations.First,since the evaluation of the status of arguments is only related to the attack relations among them,the types,origins,representation languages and methods,of underlying knowledge,are allowed to be diverse.Second,the evaluation criteria corresponding to certain argumentation semantics are suitable to various applications.Third,argumentation logic not only supports the epistemic reasoning and the practical reasoning of individual agents,but also supports the reasoning in the process of multiagent interaction(e.g.,persuasion,disputation,negotiation,etc).Currently,the emphasis of the research of argumentation logic is on the definitions and computational methods of argumentation semantics,the instantiation approaches of argumentation semantics,and the applications of argumentation semantics,etc.

Abstract:A survey of paraconsistent logics that are prominent representatives of the different approaches that have been followed to develop paraconsistent logics is provided. The paraconsistent logics that will be discussed are an enrichment of Priest's logic LP, the logic RM3 from the school of relevance logic, da Costa's logics Cn, Jaskowski's logic D2, and Subrahmanian's logics Ptau. A deontic logic based on the first of these logics will be discussed as well. Moreover, some proposed adaptations of the AGM theory of belief revision to paraconsistent logics will be mentioned.

Abstract:Bayesian epistemology has close connections to inductive reasoning, accepting the view that inductive inferences should be analyzed in terms of epistemic probabilities. An important precept of Bayesian epistemology is the dynamics of belief change, with change in belief resulting from updating procedures based on new evidence. The inductive relations between evidence E and hypotheses or theories H are essential, particularly the notions of plausibility, confirmation, and acceptability, which are critical but subject to several difficulties. As a non-deductive process, Bayesian reasoning cannot itself be subjected to strict deductive logic, but it can take advantage of an enabling logical environment. The present paper proposes that paraconsistent and paracomplete logics can be helpful for some questions of Bayesian epistemology, even to the point of being relevant in developing a legitimate paraconsistent Bayesian epistemology . By developing a novel probability theory based on the Logic of Evidence and Truth ( ), a logic that deals with evidence for or against a judgment, including contradictory or missing evidence, we allow for the possibility of quantifying the degree of evidence attributed to a proposition through novel probability measures. We illustrate, through examples, some ways to address challenging problems in the area by using paraconsistent and paracomplete paradigms. This topic is of significant interest not only in the philosophy of science but also in Artificial Intelligence and other emerging trends such as probabilistic networks and related models (see Haenni et al. Probabilistic logics and probabilistic networks, volume 350, Springer, Berlin, 2010)

Abstract:We present a novel treatment of set theory in a four-valued paraconsistent and paracomplete logic, i.e., a logic in which propositions can be both true and false, and neither true nor false. Our approach is a significant departure from previous research in paraconsistent set theory, which has almost exclusively been motivated by a desire to avoid Russell's paradox and fulfil naive comprehension. Instead, we prioritise setting up a system with a clear ontology of non-classical sets, which can be used to reason informally about incomplete and inconsistent phenomena, and is sufficiently similar to ZFC to enable the development of interesting mathematics. We propose an axiomatic system BZFC, obtained by analysing the ZFC-axioms and translating them to a four-valued setting in a careful manner, avoiding many of the obstacles encountered by other attempted formalizations. We introduce the anti-classicality axiom postulating the existence of non-classical sets, and prove a surprising results stating that the existence of a single non-classical set is sufficient to produce any other type of non-classical set. Our theory is naturally bi-interpretable with ZFC, and provides a philosophically satisfying view in which non-classical sets can be seen as a natural extension of classical ones, in a similar way to the non-well-founded sets of Peter Aczel. Finally, we provide an interesting application concerning Tarski semantics, showing that the classical definition of the satisfaction relation yields a logic precisely reflecting the non-classicality in the meta-theory.

Abstract:Paracomplete logic P1 is a logic system allowing a proposition and its negation to be false at the same time, i.e., the general law of excluded middle in this logic system would be futile. Based on the standard grammar and syntax, this paper explains the logic implication of paracomplete negation, an?alyzes the logic syntactic characteristics, testifies the decidability of paracomplete logic quasi matrix with specific lining method, demonstrates the futility of general law of excluded middle in P 1 with quasi matrix method, analyzes the logic mechanism of paracomplete logic P 1 ’ s tolerance on logic paradox, and thus compares paraconsistent logic C1 and P1 on their tolerant ability.

Paraconsistent Reasoning with Description Logics

Abstract:In an open, constantly changing and collaborative environment like the forthcoming Semantic Web, it is reasonable to expect that knowledge sources will contain noise and inaccuracies. Practical reasoning techniques for ontologies therefore will have to be tolerant to this kind of data, including the ability to handle inconsistencies in a meaningful way and to measure inconsistency degree of an inconsistent knowledge base. For this purpose, we employ paraconsistent semantics based on four-valued logic, which is a classical method for dealing with inconsistencies in knowledge bases. Its transfer to OWL DL has the following advantages: 1) It can be implemented by invoking classical reasoners and keeps the same complexity as classical inference. This is innovative with respect to other inconsistency handling approaches which get much higher complexity than classical inference. 2) It works well on kinds of description logics, such as basic ALC, on more expressive description logic SHIQ, and on tractable description logics including EL++, DL-Lite, and Horn-DLs. 3) It provides us with a direct way to define a syntax-independent measurement of inconsistency degree which provides context information for facilitating inconsistency handling.

Abstract:This paper extends the two-valued paraconsistent logic into an one in which a proposition takes a truth-value from a set of multiple fuzzy linguistic terms. More specifically, we propose the corresponding inference rule and semantics, and finally prove the soundness of our new fuzzy logical system and its completeness. Moreover, we use an example to illustrate the applicability of our logic system in real life.

Abstract:Paraconsistent circumscription LPc is a non-classical logic which has both nonmonotonicity and paraconsistency. It can be viewed as a formalism of commonsense reasoning with incomplete and inconsistent knowledge. The results of computational complexity on propositional LPc and its implementation algorithm are presented. It is showed that LPc is NP-complete. A linear algorithm to transform LPc into equivalent prior circumscription is provided. Because there are a number of useful algorithms for circumscription which could be implemented by resolution, a new way to the implementation of LPc is drawn.

Abstract:In this paper we describe the paraconsistent circumscription by the application of predicate circumscription in a paraconsistent logic, the logic of paradox LP. In addition to circumscribing the predicates, we also circumscribe the inconsistency. The paraconsistent circumscription can be well characterized by the minimal semantics which is both nonmonotonic and paraconsistent. It brings us advantages in two respects: nonmonotonic logic would be nontrivial while there was a contradiction, and paraconsistent logic would be equivalent to classical logic while there was no effect of a contradiction.

Abstract:A non-Fregean framework aims to provide a formal tool for reasoning about semantic denotations of sentences and their interactions. Extending a logic to its non-Fregean version involves introducing a new connective that allows to separate denotations of sentences from their logical values. Intuitively, combines two sentences and into a true one whenever and have the same semantic correlates, describe the same situations, or have the same content or meaning. The paper aims to compare non-Fregean paraconsistent Grzegorczyk's logics (Logic of Descriptions , Logic of Descriptions with Suszko's Axioms , Logic of Equimeaning ) with non-Fregean versions of certain well-known paraconsistent logics (Jaśkowski's Discussive Logic , Logic of Paradox , Logics of Formal Inconsistency and ). We prove that Grzegorczyk's logics are either weaker than or incomparable to non-Fregean extensions of , , . Furthermore, we show that non-Fregean extensions of , , , and are more expressive than their original counterparts. Our results highlight that the non-Fregean connective can serve as a tool for expressing various properties of the ontology underlying the logics under consideration.
