Effects of Display Format of Air Traffic Information on Situation Awareness and Cognitive Performance in Cockpit

Abstract:The present study examined the effects of information display formats on situation awareness(SA) and cognitive performance.A task of conflict detection with cockpit display of traffic information was simulated.An integral display format and a separable display format were designed for conflict detection task.The visual performance of the two display formats was evaluated by SA and performance of conflict detection.The result showed that SA and task performance were more accurate with the integral display format than with the separable display format and that SA was an important mediating variable between display formats and task performance of conflict detection.The research concluded that the superiority of integral display format over separable display format could be attributed to enhancement of SA.
