Abstract:In 2009, the National Academy of Sciences published a report questioning the scientific validity of many forensic methods including firearm examination. Firearm examination is a forensic tool used to help the court determine whether two bullets were fired from the same gun barrel. During the firing process, rifling, manufacturing defects, and impurities in the barrel create striation marks on the bullet. Identifying these striation markings in an attempt to match two bullets is one of the primary goals of firearm examination. We propose an automated framework for the analysis of the 3D surface measurements of bullet land impressions which transcribes the individual characteristics into a set of features that quantify their similarities. This makes identification of matches easier and allows for a quantification of both matches and matchability of barrels. The automatic matching routine we propose manages to (a) correctly identify land impressions (the surface between two bullet groove impressions) with too much damage to be suitable for comparison, and (b) correctly identify all 10,384 land-to-land matches of the James Hamby study.

Abstract:To make matching result converge to global optimal solution, a point cloud model matching technology based on statistical features was proposed. The model matching was realized through keeping corresponding statistical features of free model and fixed model consistent. The statistical-features-based matching was classified as: complete matching and segment matching. Complete matching could be matched without the second try, but the segment matching needed follow-up handling to finish model matching: interactively adjust unconstrained degrees of freedom to acquire the visually matching of free model and fixed model, and then accurately match them by using Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm. The matching scheme which used statistical features was stable and reliable, and it also guaranteed that the matching result was converged to global optimal solution.

Abstract:Model 3H-2100 High Speed Videography System (HSVS) developed by Zhejiang University has been applied successfully in the field for capturing flying bullet and obtaining flying bullet moving parameters with real-time image processing. While a flying bullet is detected by synchronous device, the system is in the condition of delaying time which can be controlled according to needs. As soon as the flying bullet enters visual field, a series of color flashes for ''freezing'' bullet images will be given out and the images captured by CCD videography camera will be sent to the computer. Obtaining moving parameters of a flying bullet with image processing and image recognition technique is illustrated chiefly in this paper. After the digital subtraction, binarization and morphological filtering, chain code tracing technique will be adopted to extract characteristic value for image recognition. For chain code tracing, image region will been segmented and the top, the end and the center coordinate of every flying bullet image will be obtained. When these data have been processed by a special software, some moving parameters such as velocities, accelerations, angles of elevation etc. can be obtained in real time.
Automatically matching topographical measurements of cartridge cases using a record linkage framework

Abstract:Firing a gun leaves marks on cartridge cases which purportedly uniquely identify the gun. Firearms examiners typically use a visual examination to evaluate if two cartridge cases were fired from the same gun, and this is a subjective process that has come under scrutiny. Matching can be done in a more reproducible manner using automated algorithms. In this paper, we develop methodology to compare topographical measurements of cartridge cases. We demonstrate the use of a record linkage framework in this context. We compare performance using topographical measurements to older reflectance microscopy images, investigating the extent to which the former produce more accurate comparisons. Using a diverse collection of images of over 1,100 cartridge cases, we find that overall performance is generally improved using topographical data. Some subsets of the data achieve almost perfect predictive performance in terms of precision and recall, while some produce extremely poor performance. Further work needs to be done to assess if examiners face similar difficulties on certain gun and ammunition combinations. For automatic methods, a fuller investigation into their fairness and robustness is necessary before they can be deployed in practice.

Abstract:A method of matching railway detecting images based on Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) feature is proposed.The interest area of railway is labelled manually.Then the numbers of SIFT features are got where every import image matches with aim image.The Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) method is used to get a global optimum result, and a best matching image is obtained from the matching results and the output is used to detect the road.It's been proved by experiment this method has a good performance both on efficiency and accuracy.

Abstract:On the basis of the BM algorithm and its derivative versions:BMH,Sunday and other algorithms,a new improved algorithm is presented.The improved algorithm has three important features:(1)using two-character inspired strategy to improve the pattern moving length and its probability.The largest length is n+2;(2)using the method of dynamic segmentation to minimize the matching;(3)building the chain with the location for the same character in the pattern to take full advantage of inspiring characters and reduce the redundancy of matching.Experimental results show that the improved algorithm has higher matching efficiency.

Abstract:This paper discusses the problem of classifying images of land impressions on discharged bullets in terms of the "match" and "non-match" categories. The research is aimed at improving the effectiveness of comparing land impression images by the congruent matching profile segments (CMPS) method. The scientific novelty of the approach is in supplementing the analysis with an additional independent feature, as well as in using the k -nearest neighbors algorithm at the final stage of trace comparison. The research shows that the accuracy of classification of the compared pairs of land impression images by the combined method is approximately 87%. The analysis by the CMPS method makes it possible to effectively compare land impression images with high resolution (approximately 1 μm per pixel). The research is of interest to developers of automated ballistic identification systems.

Abstract:When a bullet is fired from a barrel, random imperfections in the interior surface of the barrel imprint 3-D micro structures on the bullet surface that are seen as striations. Despite being random and non-stationary in nature, these striations are known to be consistently reproduced in a unique pattern on every bullet. This is a key idea in bullet identification. Common procedures in the field of automatic bullet identification include extraction of a feature profile from bullet image, profile smoothing and comparison of profiles using normalized cross correlation. Since the cross correlation based comparison is susceptible to high-frequency noise and nonlinear baseline drift, profile smoothing is a critical step in bullet identification. In previous work, we considered bullet images as nonlinear non-stationary processes and applied ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) as a preprocessing algorithm for smoothing and feature extraction. Using EEMD, each bullet average profile was decomposed into several scales known as intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). By choosing an appropriate range of scales, the resultant smoothed profile contained less high-frequency noise and no nonlinear baseline drift. But the procedure of choosing the proper number of IMFs to reduce the high-frequency noise effect was manual. This poses a problem in comparison of bullets whose images contained less or more noise in comparison to others because their useful information may be present in the corresponding discarded IMFs. Moreover, another problem arises when the bullet type changes. In this case manual inspection is needed once more to figure out which range of IMFs contain less high-frequency noise for this particular type of bullet. In this paper, we propose a novel combination of EEMD and Bayesian Kalman filter to solve these problems. First the bullet images are rotated using Radon transform. The rotated images are averaged column-wise to acquire averaged 1-D profiles. The nonlinear baseline drifts of averaged profiles are removed using EEMD algorithm. The profiles are then processed by a Kalman filter that is designed to automatically and optimally reduce the effect of high-frequency noise. Using Expectation Maximization (EM) technique, for each averaged profile, the parameters of Kalman filter are reconfigured to optimally suppress the high-frequency noise in each averaged profile. This work is the first effort that practically implements the Kalman filter for optimal denoising of firearm image profiles. In addition, we believe that Euclidean distance metric can help the normalized cross-correlation based comparison. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a comparison metric that is invariant to start and endpoints of firearm image profiles. This metric combines the prized properties of both Euclidean and normalized cross-correlation metrics in order to improve identification results. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on a database containing 180 2-D gray-scale images acquired from bullets fired from different AK-47 assault rifles. Although the proposed method needs more calculations in comparison to conventional methods, the experiments showed that it attained better results compared with the conventional methods and the previous method based on EMD in the field of automatic bullet identification.

Abstract:The shooting match ammunition is prepared by teams themselves in Olympic Games.The selection of the bullets has become a very important link.The previous article described a non-destructive testing method,which can help the coaches to choose match bullets quickly and accurately.Combining with the results of non-destructive testing,this paper carried out a sample test between the brand of ELEY and Triangle,compared the differences of these brands bullets in speed of bullets,charge volume,as well as targeting dispersion.Finally,a kind of high quality ammunition was selected for the shooting competition in Olympic Games.

Abstract:Breech face impressions are an essential type of physical evidence in forensic investigations. However, their surface morphology is complex and varies based on the machining method used on the gun's breech face, making traditional handcrafted local feature-based methods exhibit high false rates and are unsuitable for striated impressions. We proposed a deep local feature-based method for firearm identification utilizing Detector-Free Local Feature Matching with Transformers (LoFTR). This method removes the module of feature point detection and directly utilizes self and cross-attention layers in the Transformer to transform the convolved coarse-level feature maps into a series of dense feature descriptors. Subsequently, matches with high confidence scores are filtered based on the score matrix calculated from the dense descriptors. Finally, the screened initial matches are refined into the convolved fine-level features, and a correlation-based approach is used to obtain the exact location of the match. Validation tests were conducted using three authoritative sets of the breech face impressions datasets provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The validation results show that, compared with the traditional handcrafted local-feature based methods, the proposed method in this paper yields a lower identification error rate. Notably, the method can not only deal with granular impressions, but can also be applied to the striated impressions. The results indicate that the method proposed in this paper can be utilized for comparative analysis of breech face impressions, and provide a new automatic identification method for forensic investigations.

Abstract:The iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm is one of the most widely used methods for point sets' registration. However, ICP is very sensitive to the selection of initial points and is easy to fall into local optimum. To address this problem, many techniques have been developed. In this study, a two-step registration method is proposed for two 3-D point sets' registration, which is achieved by a combination of rough and fine registrations. Specifically, a multidiscriminant parameter feature (MDPF) extraction approach is developed and embedded into the rough registration stage in order to find new corresponding point pairs for the fine registration. Three geometric features are chosen after experimental investigation for key points selection. By using the threshold discriminant condition to determine the key points and the distance constraint to eliminate the wrong point pairs, the feature points can be extracted, and the final transform parameters can be derived based on these feature points. In order to improve the computational efficiency for fine registration, the center of gravity is created to find the closest point in solving the transformation matrix, which is especially beneficial for registering complex surfaces. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the traditional ICP approach and some typical existing improved algorithms in terms of the root-mean-square error (RMSE), the total number of feature points, and the execution time. In particular, the performance is improved 40% in terms of the RMSE and 50% in terms of the execution time in comparison with ICP on some benchmark data sets. Experiments also demonstrate that reliable reconstruction results can be obtained for both real outdoor and indoor environments.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid development of modern high technology and continuous improvement of production technology, stringent requirements have been imposed on modern barrel weapons in terms of precision, range, power, and mobility. This needs a substantial improvement and optimization of the detection equipment used to test the performance of barrel weapons. In the present work, an optimization method based on a light screen with a reflection for effectively and economically detecting bullets from barreled weapons within a large detection area is proposed. First, the detection principle of this system is described in detail. Next, the mathematical model of system detection performance is established. Then, the system is simulated, and the simulation results show the ability to realize the effective detection of a small projectile with a diameter of 5.8 mm through an area of 10 m × 10 m. The detection performance at different coordinates of the detection area is symmetrically distributed about the diagonal. Besides, the detection performance is improved with an increase in the bullet diameter and the laser power, respectively. Finally, an equal-scale reduction system with a detection area of 4 m × 4 m is constructed to perform a live ammunition shooting experiment. The distribution and variation of detection performance obtained experimentally are consistent with the simulation. Consequently, the proposed optimization method can meet the requirements concerning high detection performance, large detection area, and low cost.

Abstract:To address the problem of high-precision time-series recognition of high-resolution range profiles (HRRP) of ballistic midcourse targets, we propose a HRRP recognition method based on the multivariate time-series learning approach of Transformer encoder to further improve the recognition efficiency and accuracy. The AMTrans model is based on a multi-headed attention mechanism which can take into account multiple correlations among the input elements and adaptively adjust the attention weight in different distance units. The experimental results show that this proposed method has significant performance advantages over other methods and has better robustness.

Abstract:Comparative gunshot residue analysis addresses relevant forensic questions such as 'did suspect X fire shot Y?'. More formally, it weighs the evidence for hypotheses of the form H1: gunshot residue particles found on suspect's hands are from the same source as the gunshot residue particles found on the crime scene and H2: two sets of particles are from different sources. Currently, experts perform this analysis by evaluating the elemental composition of the particles using their knowledge and experience. The aim of this study is to construct a likelihood-ratio (LR) system based on representative data. Such an LR system can support the expert by making the interpretation of the results of electron microscopy analysis more empirically grounded. In this study we chose statistical models from the machine learning literature as candidates to construct this system, as these models have been shown to work well for large and high-dimensional datasets. Using a subsequent calibration step ensured that the system outputs well-calibrated LRs. The system is developed and validated on casework data and an additional validation step is performed on an independent dataset of cartridge data. The results show that the system performs well on both datasets. We discuss future work needed before the method can be implemented in casework.
An Automatic Method for Matching 2D ADS40 Images Onto a 3D Surface Model

Abstract:An automatic method is developed here to paste aerial images onto an urban 3D surface model for more realistic visualization. In this study we extracted different side views of urban constructions from an aerial image acquired with an airborne linear scanner sensor. We then matched those sideview images onto a 3D surface model according to the correspondence between the image and model. Side view feature extraction from images and matching those features to 3D models are two key steps in developing an automatic 3D image modelling technique. Here we present a new line-extraction approach using a multiple-level feature filter, which consists of the following: a Canny edge detector, an edge phase filter, an edge direction filter with fault tolerance, a Hough transformer, and a neighbouring line-segment fuser. We propose a base-line segmentation and parallelogram extraction algorithm based on perceptual organization. The algorithm employs uncertainty reasoning and is based on part forms for shape expression. It is computationally less intensive and noise free. Matching 2D images to 3D models requires finding a transformation matrix to minimize error. A lot of algorithms have been presented to solve the matching problem. However, there is still no good solution to the problem as it has too many unknown parameters. In this research, we first project images based on the camera model after a partial matching between the extracted parallelogram and the 3D model is carried out. Then, the Hausdorff distance is calculated between edges in the original image and the projected image, based on which sideview feature mapping is realized to obtain 3D virtual views based on a 3D surface model and a 2D image.

Abstract:3D scene perception and reconstruction based on laser point cloud is an important research direction in digital city, virtual reality and other fields. The common point cloud matching method generally refers to solving the point cloud correspondence under low dynamic conditions, but it cannot solve the point cloud matching problem under large dynamic conditions. Therefore, this paper proposes a new point cloud feature extraction and matching method, which is compatible with point cloud matching under low dynamic and large dynamic conditions. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm can adaptively solve the point cloud matching problem under various dynamic conditions, and has high accuracy.
