Abstract:It is a trend of modern measurement technology to combine the contact and non-contact measurement techniques together to realize a more efficient and high-precision inspection of manufactured products. Based on an analysis of existing optical inspection technologies and the merits and shortcomings of coordinate measuring machine (CMM) technique, we propose a multi-sensor automatic inspection system, which combines the coordinate measuring machine with non-contact optical measuring apparatus and can select automatically either of the two methods for different (simple-geometry or complex free-form) measured objects so as to raise the accuracy amd efficiency of measurement. The general planning and key components of the system are discussed.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to propose a united kinematic calibration method for a dual-machine system in automatic drilling and riveting. The method takes both absolute and relative pose accuracy into account, which will largely influence the machining accuracy of the dual-machine system and assembly quality. Design/methodology/approach A comprehensive kinematic model of the dual-machine system is established by the superposition of sub-models with pose constraints, which involves base frame parameters, kinematic parameters and tool frame parameters. Based on the kinematic model and the actual pose error data measured by a laser tracker, the parameters of coordinated machines are identified by the Levenberg–Marquardt method as a multi-objective nonlinear optimization problem. The identified parameters of the coordinated machines will be used in the control system. Findings A new calibration method for the dual-machine system is developed, including a comprehensive kinematic model and an efficient parameter identification method. The experiment results show that with the proposed method, the pose accuracy of the dual-machine system was remarkably improved, especially the relative position and orientation errors. Practical implications This method has been used in an aircraft assembly project. The calibrated dual-machine system shows a good performance on system coordination and machining accuracy. Originality/value This paper proposes a new method with high accuracy and efficiency for the dual-machine system calibration. The research can be extended to multi-machine and multi-robot fields to improve the system precision.

Abstract:Sensor is the key parts using to data collect and information processing in modem machines. With development of sensor technology, more and more small and cheap sensors are used in many monitor systems for important targets such as military forbidden zones, finance organizations and museums. In order to combine these sensors and run whole system efficiency, it needs to research the multi-sensor integration technology. On a background of distributed measure technology growth, not using a single device but combining multiple devices through a network leads to new applications. In this paper, a distributed measure system using in intelligence construction based on multi-sensor integration is introduced. The concept and general frame of the multi-sensor integration are researched. Main important problems and present available solutions are introduced in detail.

Abstract:An innovative model of equipping manufacturing machine with multi-sensor and Web techniques was proposed in order to solve the capture and transmission of real-time manufacturing information during the ongoing manufacturing activities.Through installing multi-sensor devices at machine side,a multi-sensor-based network model was constructed to form hardware foundation for collecting real-time information.Then,Agent technology was adopted to encapsulate various sensors.Corresponding real-time manufacturing information was captured under workflow management and was processed and stored according to standard templates.Execution process of the model was characterized by transparency and accessibility.The model provided solution to digital production.Finally,a case study was given to verify the prototype system.

Abstract:An in situ measurement is of prime importance when trying to maintain the position of the workpiece for further compensation processes in order to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the precision machining of three dimensional (3D) surfaces. However, the coordinates of most of the machine tools with closed machine interfaces and control system are not accessible for users, which make it difficult to use the motion axes of the machine tool for in situ measurements. This paper presents an autonomous multisensor in situ metrology system for enabling high dynamic range measurement of 3D surfaces on precision machine tools. It makes use of a designed tool path and an additional motion sensor to assist the registration of time-space data for the position estimation of a 2D laser scanner which measures the surface with a high lateral resolution and large area without the need to interface with the machine tool system. A prototype system was built and integrated into an ultra-precision polishing machine. Experimental results show that it measures the 3D surfaces with high resolution, high repeatability, and large measurement range. The system not only improves the efficiency and accuracy of the precision machining process but also extends the capability of machine tools.

Abstract:In mechanical equipment development and production, manufacturing errors and their distribution are one of the key factors affecting product performance and quality, due to the effect is more evident in the field of engine production, so it is a large demand to develop the instrument of measuring and modelling distribution error of assembly contact surfaces. In this paper, for the main engine parts of the rotary class features, a new measuring and modelling integrated technology is invented, using CMM calibration and compensation algorithm, rapid measurement, and in the machine to measure the point cloud NURBUS surface reconstruction modelling, rapid access to the part surface morphological features. The integration of measurement and modelling reduces the transmission of data, and by processing and modelling simulation of measurement data on the machine, it can provide effective data support and theoretical support for the optimization of assembly process and product performance.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel methodology that integrates a vision system and a coordinate measuring machine for rapid coordinate metrology. Rapid acquisition of coordinate data from parts having tiny dimension, complex geometry and soft or fragile material has many applications. Typical examples include Large Scale Integrated circuit, glass or plastic part measurement, and reverse engineering in rapid product design and realization. In this paper, a novel approach to a measuring methodology for a vision integrated coordinate measuring system is developed and demonstrated. The vision coordinate measuring system is characterized by an integrated use of a high precision coordinate measuring machine (CMM), a vision system, advanced computational software, and the associated electronics. The vision system includes a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera, a self-adapt brightness power, and a graphics workstation with an image processing board. The vision system along with intelligent feature recognition and auto-focus algorithms provides the feature point space coordinate of global part profile after the system has been calibrated. The measured data may be fitted to geometry element of part profile. The obtained results are subsequently used to compute parameters consist of curvature radius, distance, shape error and surface reconstruction. By integrating the vision system with the CMM, a highly automated, high speed, 3D coordinate acquisition system is developed. It has potential applications in a whole spectrum of manufacturing problems with a major impact on metrology, inspection, and reverse engineering.

Abstract:Precision machining and inspection of complex components of aerospace products have been the focuses of digital manufacturing. A feature based computer aided contact on machine measurement system was proposed in order to improve machining and inspection accuracy of complex components. A STEP-based model feature recognition and extraction system was proposed. In order to improve inspection accura-cy, the method to make compensation of the probe radius has been studied, meanwhile feature based choose of measurement points and measurement macro programs have been analyzed. Based on opencascade geo-metric modeling kernel and Qt, a prototype system was developed, and the validity of the proposed on-ma-chine measurement system was demonstrated with the inspection of alignment cylindrical bore of a cylinder head.

Abstract:It is very important to the study of CNC system of the position of work-piece machined on the worktable of the CNC machine tools. Based on the object of CNC machine tools, a new method to obtain the precision position and gesture of the work-piece that has locating planes or machining datum planes is proposed, and the work principle and experimental verification of the measuring sensor to be used are disserted. The method may realize the automatic measurement, identification and adjustment of the position and gesture of the work-piece machined by using the high-precision measuring sensor and valid algorithm without the precision positioning using the fixture, furthermore the automatic decelerate unit is set on the measuring system to improve the measuring efficiency. The experimental results prove the method is right and practicable.

Abstract:To solve the monitoring problem of lacking systematization and integration on monitoring objectives in machining automatic line,an integrated model of multi-objective monitoring for machining automatic line was established,which consisted of multi-objective system,monitoring information system and monitoring variables system.It revealed the relevance among the three systems,realized the mapping from uncertain monitoring variables system to certain monitoring objective system and provided the support for design and development of monitoring systems.Application method of model was proposed,which contained that the monitoring objectives were determined by analyzing the characteristics of monitored objects;monitoring variables was determined based on integrated model;the monitoring model and architecture were established;the monitoring system was developed.The design and development for multi-objective monitoring system of machining gears automatic production line was used to show a successful application at one gear processing enterprise.It proved that the proposed integrated model could be applied in various practical machining automatic lines and has a good application prospect.

Abstract:The tendency of the current Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools is high speed, high precision, high reliability, intelligence, integration and openness. However, there exists contradiction between high speed and high precision. The machine tool system is so complicated that its model is difficult to be constructed, simultaneously, in order to keep precision, the model will be very complex, which will lead to the decline of the speed. The paper provides the new methodology integrating the neural network and wavelet in the time-frequency space, which make only use of the signals from systems not of the model. For this new approach, no prior knowledge is required about the statistics of sensor signal, or the behavior of systems. Therefore it can realize the on-line state estimation of machine tool. It can guarantee the accuracy, at the same time, enhance the speed. Moreover, through the simulation integrated navigation system, it was proved that the new method could effectively enhance the positioning accuracy of the integrated system. Consequently, the new methodology could extend the information fusion to CNC machine tools and other sophisticated systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we design the multisensor online measure system for high precision marking and cutting robot system and introduce the data fusion method, which combines wavelet transformation with extend Kalman filter. We apply the technology measuring the three-dimensional deforming information of profiled bars. The experimental result shows that applying the multisensor data fusion technology can enhance the measure precision and the reliability of the measuring system.

Abstract:Abstract Due to the rapid development of precision manufacturing technology, much research has been conducted in the field of multisensor measurement and data fusion technology with a goal of enhancing monitoring capabilities in terms of measurement accuracy and information richness, thereby improving the efficiency and precision of manufacturing. In a multisensor system, each sensor independently measures certain parameters. Then, the system uses a relevant signal-processing algorithm to combine all of the independent measurements into a comprehensive set of measurement results. The purpose of this paper is to describe multisensor measurement and data fusion technology and its applications in precision monitoring systems. The architecture of multisensor measurement systems is reviewed, and some implementations in manufacturing systems are presented. In addition to the multisensor measurement system, related data fusion methods and algorithms are summarized. Further perspectives on multisensor monitoring and data fusion technology are included at the end of this paper.

Abstract:Focusing on multisensor metrology system consisting of trigger and arm laser scanner in a complex surface part manufacturing process, a global calibration method was proposed based on hex- ahedron. The global calibration mathematical model based on unit quaternion method was construc- ted. Aiming to determine the optimal rigid transformation matrix, mathematical morphology was ap- plied to cluster analysis on unit quaternion sphere. The simulation and industrial examples demon- strate this method is convenient,accurate and be fit for on machine metrology system calibration.

Abstract:A CNC machine tool is process control equipment integrating machine, electricity, and liquid, which makes its fault diagnosis complex and special due to its own advanced, complex, and intelligent characteristics. Traditional diagnostic methods rely on the engineering experience of technical personnel, which incorporates human subjective factors, and can only perform qualitative analysis, resulting in low diagnostic efficiency. And through a single sensor to detect and diagnose the machine tool, the accuracy and credibility of the decision are low, and the system is also weak against interference. In this paper, we first summarize the composition and working principle of CNC machine tools and analyze the working condition signals generated by CNC machine tools and the sensors that collect the signals and decide to use a multisensor multisignal fusion-based approach to monitor the machine tool status. It is possible to obtain more effective and valuable information from the observed information through multiple sensors so that the goal of fusion can be achieved. In this paper, a multisensor fusion technique based on wavelet transform and neural network fusion is applied to a machine tool condition monitoring system. The theoretical basis of wavelet analysis and neural network is introduced, and the composition of the condition monitoring system and the process of applying multisensor fusion technology based on wavelet analysis and neural network in the condition monitoring system are given. A complete software and hardware system for online monitoring of CNC machine tools is established. In order to improve the accuracy of the mathematical model, the use of a neural network to fit the nonlinear data and the use of coarse set theory to simplify the relevant data can effectively solve the accurate establishment of the mathematical model in the error compensation method. The thermal error compensation method for CNC machine tools is proposed based on rough set theory, ant colony algorithm, and neural network. This paper first investigates the current development of error compensation technology for CNC machining centers, analyzes the various error sources of CNC machine tools, and finds out the influencing factors affecting the errors of CNC machine tools.

Abstract:In the field of precision docking or assembly of large scale, the orientation and position measurement system is quite demanding. This paper proposes a long-range measuring system with the combination of low-cost tilt sensor and laser sensors to achieve orientation and position deviation during the process of docking in the outdoor environment. The measuring principle and the system construction of the integrated system are introduced in detail. Subsequently, the geometric measurement model for each assembly stage is established. The measurement system is dividing the whole measuring process into six major alignment steps to complete the automated assembly task. Then, the proposed measuring system is applied to an automated antenna assembly system to demonstrate its effectiveness in large-scale measurement. Validation experiments were performed and the preliminary result shows that the proposed system could achieve high efficiency and accuracy for large volume components automated assembly. Our main contribution is developing a new orientation and position measuring method for 6-DOF automated assembly in the outdoor environment and proposing a new approach to reduce the errors in each direction based on the step-by-step adjustment, which provides a new idea for docking and assembly in complex environment.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) technology is becoming increasingly feasible in industrial applications. Although AM systems continue to improve, the lack of repeatability and stability of these technologies remains an obstacle to industrial breakthroughs. Thus, AM process monitoring equipment has to be set up to supervise product quality and detect defects. This study first reviews the various categories of defects, relevant AM process signatures, and optical monitoring methods of powder bed fusion processes proposed so far. Then, according to the detection requirements, an optical process monitoring system based on multiple sensors is proposed, which is equipped with a white light imaging channel, an infrared imaging channel, and a polarization imaging channel. The aberrations can be optimized using Zemax software by appropriately selecting the optimization function operands. Thus, the design requirements for the multi-sensor monitoring system for the AM process can be achieved.
