Abstract:The authors present a necessary and sufficient condition for the completeness of any partial dyadic wavelet transform domain representation (PDWTDR) of discrete finite data length signals (including dyadic wavelet transform extrema and zero-crossing representations). It is shown that completeness depends only on the locations of the retained samples of the dyadic wavelet transform. The present completeness test is more convenient and easier to verify than previously derived tests. It is also shown how to ensure the completeness of the representation by adding additional information in those cases where the PDWTDR is incomplete. The numerical stability of such a representation is also discussed. A fast-Fourier-transform (FFT)-based reconstruction algorithm from such a signal representation is also described.<>

Abstract:A singularity detection and denoising method based on analytic wavelet transform(AWT) and signal reconstruction was proposed to improve the accuracy of signal singularity detection and the efficiency of fault diagnosis.According to the difference of propagation characteristics of wavelet transform modulus maximum(WTMM) of signal and noise along the scale direction,signal denoising and fault feature extraction were realized.Singularity detection and denoising based on AWT was applied to the vibration signals of running machines.Signals sampled under several conditions in a main reducer performance test bed were analyzed,and the fault diagnosis of the main reducer was conducted by analytic WTMM and real WTMM respectively.Experimental results show that the singularity detection using the modulus maximum of an analytic wavelet is better than that of a real wavelet,and that the fault feature can be distinguished more obviously and accurately.

Abstract:With the rapid development of VLSI, it is essential and possible to use special chips designed for signal processing to make the mathematical transforms faster. Hardware realization structure can provide a way of realizing Mallat's algorithm. In this paper, the author employed digital filter design techniques in wavelet representation of discrete signals. The finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) filters were used as mirror filters based on convolutions with quadrature mirror filtering. Digital filter for down-sampling is proposed and described mainly. This paper showed that the structures of FIR and IIR filters can accomplish the decomposing of a discrete approximation A2 i+1 d f into approximation at a coarser resolution A2 j d f and the detail signal D2 j f . The realization structure of hardware chips can be used to signal processing, analysis and pattern recognition.

Abstract:As every engineering student knows, any signal can be portrayed as an overlay of sinusoidal waveforms of assorted frequencies. But while classical analysis copes superbly with naturally occurring sinusoidal behavior-the kind seen in speech signals-it is ill-suited to representing signals with discontinuities, such as the edges of features in images. Latterly, another powerful concept has swept applied mathematics and engineering research: wavelet analysis. In contrast to a Fourier sinusoid, which oscillates forever, a wavelet is localized in time-it lasts for only a few cycles. Like Fourier analysis, however, wavelet analysis uses an algorithm to decompose a signal into simpler elements. Here, the authors describe how localized waveforms are powerful building blocks for signal analysis and rapid prototyping-and how they are now available in software toolkits.

Abstract:Currently, two-dimensional dyadic wavelet transform (2D-DWT) is habitually considered as the one presented by Mallat, which is defined by an approximation component, two detail components in horizontal and vertical directions. This paper is to introduce a new type of two-dimensional dyadic wavelet transform and its application so that dyadic wavelet can be studied and used widely furthermore. (1) Two-dimensional stationary dyadic wavelet transform (2D-SDWT) is proposed, it is defined by approximation coefficients, detail coefficients in horizontal, vertical and diagonal directions, which is essentially the extension of two-dimensional stationary wavelet transform for orthogonal/biorthogonal wavelet filters. (2) epsilon-decimated dyadic discrete wavelet transform (DDWT) is introduced and its relation with 2D-SDWT is given, where epsilon is a sequence of 0's and 1's. (3) Mallat decomposition algorithm based on dyadic wavelet is introduced as a special case of epsilon-decimated DDWT, and so a face recognition algorithm based on dyadic wavelet is proposed, and experimental results are given to show its effectiveness.
Warped empirical wavelet transform and its application to vibration signal analysis for a hydro turbine

Abstract:Real-life signals are usually composed of many signal modes. To extract valuable information underling a signal, it is necessary to decompose the signal into a sum of inherent modes. Recently, an adaptive signal decomposition method called empirical wavelet transform (EWT) has attracted extensive attention from the community. The EWT extracts the desired signal modes by constructing an adaptive wavelet filter bank in the Fourier spectrum. However, for nonstationary signals such as vibration signals of varying-speed rotating machineries, the signal modes often overlap in the Fourier spectrum. The EWT cannot separate these overlapped modes. To solve this problem, the warped EWT (WEWT) is put forward in this paper. The idea of the WEWT is to map the signal from the time domain to the phase domain by using the timewarping transformation. The Fourier spectrums (i.e., order spectrums) of the modes of the transformed signal are separated and therefore the EWT method can now effectively decompose the obtained signal. A simulated example and a practical vibration signal from a hydro turbine during a shut-down process are considered to show the advantages of the proposed WEWT.

Abstract:In this paper, a complex-valued wavelet network (CWN) is proposed. The network has complex inputs, outputs, connection weights, dilation and translation parameters, but the nonlinearity of the hidden nodes remains a real-valued function (real-valued wavelet function). This kind of network is able to approximate an arbitrary nonlinear function in complex multi-dimensional space, and it provides a powerful tool for nonlinear signal processing involving complex signals. A complex algorithm is derived for the training of the proposed CWN. A numerical example on nonlinear communication channel identification is presented for illustration.

Abstract:Based on wavelet multiresolution analysis theory, this paper proposes a two-step identification method for multirate sampled-data systems. First the problem of multirate sampled-data consistent reconstruction is studied, then a new weighted band-wise identification method is proposed. This method has the advantages of noise-free, convenient modeling of the interesting band of plant precisely, and easy incorporation with system design. Simulation results are given to illustrate that this two-step identification method is effective and feasible in process modeling.

Abstract:Empirical wavelets transform (EWT) is a fully adaptive signal-analysis approach, which is similar to the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) but has a consolidated mathematical theory, and is appealing in designing automatic algorithm for a variety of signal processing tasks. EWT first estimates the frequency components presented in the given signal, then, computes the boundaries and extracts the oscillatory components based on the computed boundaries. Because of the excellent performance of the EWT in decomposing the nonlinear and non-stationary signals, it has been successfully applied into a number of problems. The last six years have seen the development of EWT. This paper presents a general overview of the recent advancements made in research on the EWT algorithm and its state-of-the-art applications in a wide range of areas, such as machine fault diagnosis, seismic data analysis, image processing, power system monitoring, and medical disease diagnosis, which aims at providing some comprehensive references for reader concerning with EWT. We place emphasis on the applications of using such signal-analysis algorithm throughout with illustrative examples. Finally, the potential avenues for the future trends and directions associated with EWT are discussed.

Abstract:Digital signal is a function of time, which is some physical quantities long with time transformation, and the original signal is decomposed into a series of approximate component and details component by wavelet analysis. The wavelet transform is used in digital signal processing for simulation in MATLAB platform, and giving an example analysis. The result shows that the choice of suitable wavelet function makes the least amount of calculation, the high detection performance and the strong function. Wavelet transform in digital signal processing has a broad prospect of application.
Non-decimated Complex Wavelet Spectral Tools with Applications

Abstract:In this paper we propose spectral tools based on non-decimated complex wavelet transforms implemented by their matrix formulation. This non-decimated complex wavelet spectra utilizes both real and imaginary parts of complex-valued wavelet coefficients via their modulus and phases. A structural redundancy in non-decimated wavelets and a componential redundancy in complex wavelets act in a synergy when extracting wavelet-based informative descriptors. In particular, we suggest an improved way of separating signals and images based on their scaling indices in terms of spectral slopes and information contained in the phase in order to improve performance of classification. We show that performance of the proposed method is significantly improved when compared with procedures based on standard versions of wavelet transforms or on real-valued wavelets. It is also worth mentioning that the matrix-based non-decimated wavelet transform can handle signals of an arbitrary size and in 2-D case, rectangular images of possibly different and non-dyadic dimensions. This is in contrast to the standard wavelet transforms where algorithms for handling objects of non-dyadic dimensions requires either data preprocessing or customized algorithm adjustments. To demonstrate the use of defined spectral methodology we provide two examples of application on real-data problems: classification of visual acuity using scaling in pupil diameter dynamic in time and diagnostic and classification of digital mammogram images using the fractality of digitized images of the background tissue. The proposed tools are contrasted with the traditional wavelet based counterparts.

Abstract:The symplectic wavelet transform, which is related to the quantum optical Fresnel transform, is developed to the symplectic-dilation mixed wavelet transform (SDWT). The SDWT involves both a real-variable dilation-transform and a complex-variable symplectic transform and possesses well-behaved properties such as the Parseval theorem and the inversion formula. The entangled-coherent state representation not only underlies the SDWT but also helps to derive the corresponding quantum transform operator whose counterpart in classical optics is the lens-Fresnel mixed transform.

Abstract:Complex FM(m)let transform is convenient for dealing with complex signals. But the overwhelming majority of actual signals encountered in real world are real rather than complex, and are discrete rather than continuous. If we have real formulations of FM(m)let transform, it becomes unnecessary to devise special suboptimal algorithms to handle real signals. Consequently, such recasting of a problem can save a good deal of computations. Towards this end, we derive in this paper the real, discrete, and real discrete FMmlet transforms from the complex FM(m)let transform.
Integrated design approach of fault detection systems based on wavelet transform

Abstract:Problems related to the integrated design of robust fault detection (FD) systems are studied. Firstly, a problem of the 2-norm based approaches is discussed, i.e. due to the necessary length of the time window introduced to realize the 2-norm based residual evaluation function of a FD system, the expected optimal performance of the FD system may not be achieved when the system is realized in real applications. Then a new kind of evaluation function based on the absolute value of the wavelet transform (WT) of the residual signal and the corresponding integrated design approach for the FD systems are proposed. Different from the usual 2-norm based approaches whose mathematical basis is the relationship between the whole energy of the output and input signal of a dynamic system, a relationship between the instant power of the WT of the output signal and the energy of the past input signal of a dynamic system is established and further used for the FD system design. It solves the problem in the 2-norm based method, and the resulting FD system is easy to implement, and can detect faults very rapidly with a low miss detection ratio

Abstract:The polar wavelet transform (PWT) has been proven to be a powerful mathematical tool for signal and image processing in recent years. Due to the increasing demand for directional representations of signals in engineering, it is impossible to fully exploit the intrinsic directional features of signals to describe high-dimensional signals like images. Focusing on this problem, the polar linear canonical wavelet transform (PLCWT) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the theory of the PLCWT is investigated in detail, including its definition, basic properties and inversion formula. Secondly, the convolution and correlation theorems of the PLCWT are derived. Thirdly, uncertainty principles related to the PLCWT are obtained. Finally, the potential application of the PLCWT in image edge detection is discussed. Simulation results verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:At present, electroencephalogram (EEG) signals play an irreplaceable role in the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases and medical research. EEG signals need to be processed in order to reduce the adverse effects of irrelevant physiological process interference and measurement noise. Wavelet transform (WT) can provide a time-frequency representation of a dynamic process, and it has been widely utilized in salient feature analysis of EEG. In this paper, we investigate the problem of translation variability (TV) in discrete wavelet transform (DWT), which causes degradation of time-frequency localization. It will be verified through numerical simulations that TV is caused by downsampling operations in decomposition process of DWT. The presence of TV may cause severe distortions of features in wavelet subspaces. However, this phenomenon has not attracted much attention in the scientific community. Redundant discrete wavelet transform (RDWT) is derived by eliminating the downsampling operation. RDWT enjoys the attractive merit of translation invariance. RDWT shares the same time-frequency pattern with that of DWT. The discrete delta impulse function is used to test the time-frequency response of DWT and RDWT in wavelet subspaces. The results show that DWT is very sensitive to the translation of delta impulse function, while RDWT keeps the decomposition results unchanged. This conclusion has also been verified again in decomposition of actual EEG signals. In conclusion, to avoid possible distortions of features caused by translation sensitivity in DWT, we recommend the use of RDWT with more stable performance in BCI research and clinical applications.
