Abstract:Objective To study the mechanism of hyperglycemia on brain damage following global ischemia/reperfusion.Methods In a rat model of cardiac arrest and resuscitation, hyperglycemia was induced before ischemia by intraperitoneal dextrose administration,Myeloperoxidase(MPO)immunohistochemistry was used to ascertain the neutrophil deposition in brain at 24 h and 72 h after cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Results Brain of normoglycemic-ischemic animals contained almost no MPO activity.By contrast, striking numbers of MPO-positive cell were prestent in brain after hyperglycemic ischemia. Conclusion Hyperglycemia triggers the early, massive deposition of neutrophils in the postischemic global brain, which is an important event that may contribute to exacerbation global ischemia/reperfusion injury.
