Abstract:Objective To explore the selection of surgical method to treat the temporal arachnoid cysts. Methods The clinical data of 65 children with temporal arachnoid cysts, of whom, 27 underwent cysto-peritoneal shunt (CPS), 17 craniotomy for cystic fenestration under an operating microscope and 21 neuroendoscope-assisted cystic fenestration or resection of partial cyst in recent 6 years, are analysed retrospectively. Results The postoperative shrinkage rates of the cysts were 88.9%, 94.1% and 95.2% respectively in the children undergoing CPS, craniotomy under an operating microscope and neuroendoscope -assisted neurosurgery. The postoperatived complications in the patients undergoing CPS included insensitivity to antibiotics when they were infected and shunt dependence. The postoperative complications in the patients undergoing the craniotomy and neuroendoscope-assisted neurosurgery included subdural hydromas and chronic hematomas. Conclusions The individual surgical treatment should be performed according to the cystic shape and size, and different function of absorbing cerebrospinal fluid, but the minimally invasive surgery should be emphasized in the children with temporal arachnoid cysts.
