Abstract:Phenolic compounds are the most important group of secondary metabolites widely distributed in plants,playing important roles in diverse physiological processes such as plant quality,coloring,flavor and stress resistance.The natural antioxidant activities of phenolic compounds become a hot spot in terms of research and utilization at present.In this review,the structural characterization,distribution,composition and diverse functions of phenolic compounds in plants and human bodies were summarized,and the preparation methods and progress in phenolic compounds biosynthesis genes and their regulation modes were concluded as well in order to elucidate the physiological,nutritional and antioxidant functions of different phenolic compounds in plants and human.

Abstract:Objective To study the chemical constituents from leaves of Phyllostachys pubescens. Method Column chromatography on sephadex LH-20 as well as preparative HPLC and spectral analysis were used to isolate and elucidate the constituents. Result Six compounds were isolated from leaves of Phyllostachys pubescens, and identified as vanillin (I), syringic aldehyde (II), p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (III), vanillic acid (IV), syringic acid (V), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy cinnamic acid, ethyl ester (VI). Conclusion All above the compounds were isolated from the plant for the first time.

Abstract:Phenolic acid is a family of nutrient and bioactive components in vegetable and fruits. Recently considerable studies found that phenolic acid contained many bioactivities, such as antioxidant, anticancer, antibacterial, anti-obesity, liver protection, improving immunity, mood modification, anti-inflammatory, antivirus and cardiovascular protection. The paper briefly introduced the structure, common form in plant and occurrence in food, emphasized especially the new researches of bioactivities.

Abstract:Land-adapted plants appeared between about 480 and 360 million years ago in the mid-Palaeozoic era, originating from charophycean green algae. The successful adaptation to land of these prototypes of amphibious plants - when they emerged from an aquatic environment onto the land - was achieved largely by massive formation of "phenolic UV light screens". In the course of evolution, plants have developed the ability to produce an enormous number of phenolic secondary metabolites, which are not required in the primary processes of growth and development but are of vital importance for their interaction with the environment, for their reproductive strategy and for their defense mechanisms. From a biosynthetic point of view, beside methylation catalyzed by O-methyltransferases, acylation and glycosylation of secondary metabolites, including phenylpropanoids and various derived phenolic compounds, are fundamental chemical modifications. Such modified metabolites have altered polarity, volatility, chemical stability in cells but also in solution, ability for interaction with other compounds (co-pigmentation) and biological activity. The control of the production of plant phenolics involves a matrix of potentially overlapping regulatory signals. These include developmental signals, such as during lignification of new growth or the production of anthocyanins during fruit and flower development, and environmental signals for protection against abiotic and biotic stresses. For some of the key compounds, such as the flavonoids, there is now an excellent understanding of the nature of those signals and how the signal transduction pathway connects through to the activation of the phenolic biosynthetic genes. Within the plant environment, different microorganisms can coexist that can establish various interactions with the host plant and that are often the basis for the synthesis of specific phenolic metabolites in response to these interactions. In the rhizosphere, increasing evidence suggests that root specific chemicals (exudates) might initiate and manipulate biological and physical interactions between roots and soil organisms. These interactions include signal traffic between roots of competing plants, roots and soil microbes, and one-way signals that relate the nature of chemical and physical soil properties to the roots. Plant phenolics can also modulate essential physiological processes such as transcriptional regulation and signal transduction. Some interesting effects of plant phenolics are also the ones associated with the growth hormone auxin. An additional role for flavonoids in functional pollen development has been observed. Finally, anthocyanins represent a class of flavonoids that provide the orange, red and blue/purple colors to many plant tissues. According to the coevolution theory, red is a signal of the status of the tree to insects that migrate to (or move among) the trees in autumn.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds and flavonoids are potential substitutes for bioactive agents in pharmaceutical and medicinal sections to promote human health and prevent and cure different diseases. The most common flavonoids found in nature are anthocyanins, flavones, flavanones, flavonols, flavanonols, isoflavones, and other sub-classes. The impacts of plant flavonoids and other phenolics on human health promoting and diseases curing and preventing are antioxidant effects, antibacterial impacts, cardioprotective effects, anticancer impacts, immune system promoting, anti-inflammatory effects, and skin protective effects from UV radiation. This work aims to provide an overview of phenolic compounds and flavonoids as potential and important sources of pharmaceutical and medical application according to recently published studies, as well as some interesting directions for future research. The keyword searches for flavonoids, phenolics, isoflavones, tannins, coumarins, lignans, quinones, xanthones, curcuminoids, stilbenes, cucurmin, phenylethanoids, and secoiridoids medicinal plant were performed by using Web of Science, Scopus, Google scholar, and PubMed. Phenolic acids contain a carboxylic acid group in addition to the basic phenolic structure and are mainly divided into hydroxybenzoic and hydroxycinnamic acids. Hydroxybenzoic acids are based on a C6-C1 skeleton and are often found bound to small organic acids, glycosyl moieties, or cell structural components. Common hydroxybenzoic acids include gallic, syringic, protocatechuic, p-hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, gentistic, and salicylic acids. Hydroxycinnamic acids are based on a C6-C3 skeleton and are also often bound to other molecules such as quinic acid and glucose. The main hydroxycinnamic acids are caffeic, p-coumaric, ferulic, and sinapic acids.

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo study the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Petasites tricholobus and its phenolic components.METHODPhenolic compounds were separated purified by column chromatographic methods such as macroporous resin D-101, silica gel, ODS, MCI GEL CHP 20P, Sephadex LH-20. Their structures were identified on the basis of physicochemical property and multiple spectral data.RESULTNineteen phenolic compounds were separated from 95% ethanol extracts from P. tricholobus Franch. and identified as sulfonated benzyl glucoside (1), 3-(4beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy-3, 5-dimethoxy) -phenyl-2E-propenol (2), dihydrosyringin (3), tangshenosides II (4), 4-hydroxy-2,6-dimethoxyphenol-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5), 4-hydroxymethyl-2, 6-dimethoxyphenyl-1-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (6), arbutin (7), rutin (8), kaempferol-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 --> 6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (9), quercetin-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (10), kaempferol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (11), afzelin (12), petasiphenol (13), caffeic acid (14), chlorogenic acid (15), 2-hydroxy-5-acetylbenzoic acid (16), p-hydroxy-benzoic acid (17), protocatechuic aldehyde (18) , and p-hydroxy-phenylpropionic acid (19).CONCLUSIONAbove result shows that phenolic compounds contained in P. tricholobus mainly include simple phenols, phenolic glycosides, coffee acid and flavonoid glycosides. Among them, compound 1 was separated from the composite family for the first time; compounds 2-7, 9, 11, 12, 16, 19 were separated from the genus Petasites for the first time, and the others were separated from the plant for the first time. These compounds have been proved to have pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammation, antibiosis, antioxidantion.

Abstract:Usually regarded as less evolved than their more recently diverged vascular sisters, which currently dominate vegetation landscape, bryophytes seem having nothing to envy to the defensive arsenal of other plants, since they had acquired a suite of chemical traits that allowed them to adapt and persist on land. In fact, these closest modern relatives of the ancestors to the earliest terrestrial plants proved to be marvelous chemists, as they traditionally were a popular remedy among tribal people all over the world, that exploit their pharmacological properties to cure the most different diseases. The phytochemistry of bryophytes exhibits a stunning assortment of biologically active compounds such as lipids, proteins, steroids, organic acids, alcohols, aliphatic and aromatic compounds, polyphenols, terpenoids, acetogenins and phenylquinones, thus it is not surprising that substances obtained from various species belonging to such ancestral plants are widely employed as antitumor, antipyretic, insecticidal and antimicrobial. This review explores in particular the antifungal potential of the three Bryophyta divisions—mosses (Musci), hornworts (Anthocerotae) and liverworts (Hepaticae)—to be used as a sources of interesting bioactive constituents for both pharmaceutical and agricultural areas, providing an updated overview of the latest relevant insights.

Abstract:Bryophytes are close extant relatives of the ancestral land plant. As such, they have retained many innovations that had enabled the adaptation of early land plants to the terrestrial environment. One of such important innovations is the elaboration of an enormously diverse array of secondary metabolites. This article reviews current knowledge of terpenoid secondary metabolites, which constitute the largest family of plant metabolites, in bryophytes from three perspectives: chemical diversity, biosynthesis, and biological functions. The diversity of terpenoids in bryophytes, particularly in liverworts, is enormously rich. More than 1600 terpenoids have been reported from this plant group. While many terpenoids are observed in both bryophytes and seed plants, some are unique to bryophytes. It is just the beginning for us to understand the molecular and biochemical basis underlying terpenoid biosynthesis in bryophytes. Compared to seed plants, which have only one type of terpene synthase genes, so-called typical plant terpene synthase genes, bryophytes employ not only typical plant terpene synthase genes but also another class of terpene synthase genes called microbial-terpene synthase-like (MTPSL) genes for terpenoid biosynthesis. Biochemical studies suggest the MTPSLs are largely responsible for the terpenoid diversity in bryophytes, particularly sesquiterpenes and monoterpenes. Existing literature indicates that terpenoids made by bryophytes have important functions in diverse biological and ecological processes, particularly as defenses against biotic and abiotic stresses. The continued development of genomic resources and molecular tool kit for bryophytes will accelerate characterization of terpenoids biosynthesis and their biological functions in this important lineage of plants.

Abstract:To study the chemical constituents of Lysimachia patungensis Hand.-Mazz., silica gel column chromatography, reverse phase ODS column chromatography, MCI and Sephadex LH-20, were used to separate the 95% EtOH extract of the whole plant of Lysimachia patungensis Hand.-Mazz.. The structures of the isolated compounds have been established on the basis of chemical and NMR spectroscopic evidence as well as ESI-MS in some cases. Twelve phenolic compounds were obtained and identified as quercetin-3, 3′-di- O-α-L-rhamnoside (1), myricetrin (2), quercitrin (3), rutin (4), 2-hydroxynaringenin-4′-O- glucopyranoside (5), naringenin 7-O-glucopyranoside (6), liquiritin apioside (7), licochalcone B (8), tetrahydroxymethoxy chalcone (9), methyl-p-coumarate (10), 2, 4, 6-trihydroxy acetophenone-2-O-glucopyranoside (11) and vaccihein A (12). Among them, compound 1 is a new compound, and compounds 5, 11 and 12 are isolated from the genus Lysimachia L. for the first time, and the others are isolated from the plant for the first time.

Abstract:The diversity of secondary compounds in the plant kingdom is huge. About 200,000 compounds are known, which are grouped into amines, non-protein amino acids, peptides, alkaloids, glucosinolates, cyanogenic glucosides, organic acids, terpenoids, quinones, polyacetylenes, and phenolics. The group of phenolic compounds consists of polyphenols, oligophenols and monophenols or simple phenolic compounds such as benzoic and cinnamic acids and their hydroxylated derivatives. Among the thousands of compounds present in ecological interactions, simple phenolic acids are the most abundant in soils, and many are described as allelochemicals. Given the physiological and biochemical importance of these compounds, we review their biosynthesis and metabolic actions in plants.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds are vast, diverse, ubiquitous and widespread in nature. The biological significance of bioactive phenolic natural secondary metabolites is immense and of high and significant importance. Phenolic compounds are known to exhibit various biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This book chapter begins with classification of phenolic compounds in concise manner followed by going through their chemical properties that are essential for their biological activities. Some chemical properties such as acidity and formation of radicals are directly linked with their important and key biological activities such as antioxidant properties. The chapter covers methods and updated techniques of analysis of phenolic compounds. Finally, biosynthesis of such important organic molecules is covered going through some of their current synthesis methods in the laboratory, methods of their synthetic elaboration. Due to the high potential of phenolic compounds for applications in various industries such as pharmaceutical and food industries, the search for the development of efficient methods for their synthesis as well as modern and accurate methods for their detection and analysis will continue.

Abstract:Polyphenols are one of the largest and most widespread groups of secondary metabolites in the plants world. These compounds are of particular interest due to their occurrence and the properties they possess. The main sources of phenolic compounds are fruits and vegetables, but lately, more and more studies refer to woody vascular plants, especially to bark, as an important source of phenolic compounds with a potential biological effect. This study aims to bring together information on the phenolic compounds present in the bark of woody vascular plants by discussing extraction methods, the chemical composition of the extracts and potential biological effects. The literature data used in this paper were collected via PubMed (2004–2019). Search terms were: bark, rhytidome, woody vascular plant, polyphenols, phenolic compounds, biologic activity, antioxidant, immunostimulatory, antimutagenic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antitumoral. This paper intends to highlight the fact that the polyphenolic extracts obtained from the bark of woody vascular plants represent sources of bioactive compounds with antioxidant, immunostimulatory, antimutagenic, antibacterial properties, etc. Future research directions should be directed towards identification and isolation of bioactive compounds. Consequently, biologically active compounds obtained from the bark of woody plants could be exploited on an industrial scale.

Abstract:Covering: 2000 to 2023 Simple phenylpropanoids are a large group of natural products with primary C6–C3 skeletons. They are not only important biomolecules for plant growth but also crucial chemicals for high-value industries, including fragrances, nutraceuticals, biomaterials, and pharmaceuticals. However, with the growing global demand for simple phenylpropanoids, direct plant extraction or chemical synthesis often struggles to meet current needs in terms of yield, titre, cost, and environmental impact. Benefiting from the rapid development of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology, microbial production of natural products from inexpensive and renewable sources provides a feasible solution for sustainable supply. This review outlines the biological activities of simple phenylpropanoids, compares their biosynthetic pathways in different species (plants, bacteria, and fungi), and summarises key research on the microbial production of simple phenylpropanoids over the last decade, with a focus on engineering strategies that seem to hold most potential for further development. Moreover, constructive solutions to the current challenges and future perspectives for industrial production of phenylpropanoids are presented.

Abstract:Phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs) are compounds made of phenylethyl alcohol, caffeic acid and glycosyl moieties. The first published references about phenylethanoid glycosides concerned the isolation of echinacoside from Echinaceu ungustifolia (Asteraceae) in 1950 and verbascoside from Verbascum sinuatum (Scrophulariaceae) in 1963. Over the past 60 years, many compounds with these structural characteristics have been isolated from natural sources, and most of these compounds possess significant bioactivities, including antibacterial, antitumor, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, neuro-protective, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and immunomodulatory activities, among others. In this review, we will summarize the phenylethanoid glycosides described in recent papers and list all the compounds that have been isolated over the past few decades. We will also attempt to present and assess recent studies about the separation, extraction, determination, and pharmacological activity of the excellent natural components, phenylethanoid glycosides.

Abstract:Biomass polyphenols are bio-active macromolecules with distinct chemical structures in a variety of biomass. In recent years, the study of biomass polyphenols and their application in food and medicine fields has become a research hotspot, which predominantly focuses on the preparation, purification, structural identifications, and measurements of biological activities. Many studies describe methodologies for extraction and application of polyphenols, but comprehensive work to review its physiological activities like drugs and health products are lacking. This paper comprehensively unlocks the bioactivities of antioxidant, antibacterial, antitumor, anticancer, neuroprotection, control of blood sugar, regulation of blood fat, and promotion of gastrointestinal health functions of polyphenols from different biomass sources. This review will serve as an illuminating resource for the global scientific community, especially for those who are actively working to promote the advances of the polyphenols research field.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds constitute a large and diverse group of secondary metabolites derived from phenylalanine and tyrosine and are widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom. They could be divided into different classes such as simple phenol, phenyl acetic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid, and other phenylpropanoids as well as condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) and hydrolysable tannins, among others, depending on their basic carbon skeleton structure. Phenolic compounds in plant-based foods have been suggested to have a number of beneficial health effects including prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immune disorders, neurogenerative disease and others. These properties are largely attributable to the antioxidant activity of the phenolic compounds as well as other mechanisms of action. Therefore, nutraceuticals of plant origin may evolve to be considered a vital aspect of dietary-disease preventive food components. Agri-food industries generate substantial quantities of phenolic rich by-products, which could serve as an attractive and commercially viable source of nutraceuticals. This contribution mainly summarizes the occurrence of phenolic compounds and some other bioactives in various Agri-food by-products, their bioavailability and health benefits.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds are minor metabolites usually present in mushroom species. Because of their potential advantages for human health, such as antioxidant and other biological activities, these bioactive components have been gaining more interest as functional foods, nutraceutical agents for providing better health conditions. This review aims to comprehensively discuss the recent advances in mushroom phenolic compounds, including new sources, structural characteristics, biological activities, potential uses and its industrial applications as well as the future perspectives. Phenolic acids as well as flavonoids are considered the most common phenolics occurring in mushroom species. These are responsible for its bioactivities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antihyperglycaemic, antiosteoporotic, anti-tyrosinase and antimicrobial activities. Several edible mushroom species with good phenolic content and show higher biological activity were highlighted, in a way for its futuristic applications. Trends on mushroom research highlighting new research areas, such as nanoformulation were discussed. Furthermore, the use of phenolic compounds as nutraceutical and cosmeceutical agents as well as the future perspectives and recommendations were made.

Abstract:There are many kinds of natural phenazine-containing compounds,and most of them possessing broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects can be widely used in the medical field and agriculture.Primary phenazine natural products are isolated as secondary metabolites from Pseudomonas and Streptomyces.Shikimic acid pathway,alternate pathways and phenazine-modifying pathways are believed primary pathways of phenazine biosynthesis.
