Abstract:Traditional rhetoric theory regards metaphor and metonymy as two literary rhetoric devices. Modern cognitive linguistics believes that metaphor does not only exist in the field of literature. Metaphor is not only a rhetorical device but also a way of thinking. However, the current research on metaphor and metonymy is still limited to the English language world. Hence, there is a lack of knowledge and research on metaphor and metonymy across languages and cultures. This paper begins with an overview of metaphor from the perspective of modern cognitive linguistics. Then, it expounds on the differences between metaphor and metonymy from two aspects of structure and function. Besides, this paper analyzes the differences between metaphor and metonymy with examples based on the Chinese cultural background.

Abstract:Abduction and metaphor are two significant concepts in cognitive science. It is found that the both mental processes are on the basis of certain similarity. The similarity inspires us to seek the answers to the following two questions: (1) Whether there is a common cognitive mechanism behind abduction and metaphor? And (2) if there is, whether this common mechanism could be interpreted within the unified frame of modern intelligence theory? Centering on these two issues, the paper attempts to characterize and interpret the generation and evolution of scientific metaphors from the perspective of the cognitive mechanism of abductive inference. Then it interprets the common cognitive mechanism behind abduction and metaphor within Hawkins’ frame of intelligence theory. The commonality between abduction and metaphor indicates the potential to further explore human intelligence.

Abstract:Metaphor and metonymy, which are treated as two basic cognitive and conceptual mechanisms in cognitive linguistics, are highly interactive to each other. Metaphor from metonymy, as a complicated linguistic device and cognitive mechanism, has long been ignored although it helps create abundant implications and aesthetic value in poetry. This paper explores functions of metaphor from metonymy in meaning construction in classical Chinese poetry in order to offer a new perspective for the research of classical Chinese poetry and provide implications for appreciation, translation and teaching of classical Chinese poetry.

Abstract:Language understanding is one of the most important characteristics for human beings. As a pervasive phenomenon in natural language, metaphor is not only an essential thinking approach, but also an ingredient in human conceptual system. Many of our ways of thinking and experiences are virtually represented metaphorically. With the development of the cognitive research on metaphor, it is urgent to formulate a computational model for metaphor understanding based on the cognitive mechanism, especially with the view to promoting natural language understanding. Many works have been done in pragmatics and cognitive linguistics, especially the discussions on metaphor understanding process in pragmatics and metaphor mapping representation in cognitive linguistics. In this paper, a theoretical framework for metaphor understanding based on the embodied mechanism of concept inquiry is proposed. Based on this framework, ontology is introduced as the knowledge representation method in metaphor understanding, and metaphor mapping is formulated as ontology mapping. In line with the conceptual blending theory, a revised conceptual blending framework is presented by adding a lexical ontology and context as the fifth mental space, and a metaphor mapping algorithm is proposed.

Abstract:From the perspective of cognitive linguistics, translation is a practical activity with cognitive attributes. Relevance theory interprets the deep structure and meaning of metaphors from the perspective of optimal relevance, providing an evaluation mechanism for metaphor research within the framework of cognitive linguistics theory. Metaphor translation is the conversion between two languages, and the cultural differences between languages inevitably hinder this conversion process, making metaphor translation a difficult task. As an indispensable expression in political literature, metaphor permeates the cultural connotations of discourse, reflects the ideology of discourse, and provides a basis for interpreting the deep structure of discourse. This article takes the metaphor and translation of discourse in political literature as the research object, and explores the Japanese translation strategies of metaphors from the perspective of cognitive linguistics.

Abstract:In this paper, the Chinese to English Translation of conceptual metaphors in Song of a Pipa Player, a famous Chinese poem, is analyzed with references to the two English versions of Yang Xianyi & Gladys Yang and Xu Yuanchong. After a review of the translation of metaphors, this paper adopts a cognitive approach to metaphor translation analysis. The three types of conceptual metaphors confined by Lakoff and Johnson1 are applied in the article. Finally, it was observed that three major translation methods are mainly employed in the two versions: retaining the source domain, replacing the original metaphor and deleting the metaphor.

Abstract:The article dwells on a modern cognitive and discourse study of metaphors. Taking the advantage of the analysis and fusion of information in foreign and domestic papers, the researcher delves into their classification from the ontological, axiological and epistemological points of view. The ontological level breaks down into two basic approaches, namely metaphorical nature of discourse and discursive nature of metaphors. The former analyses metaphors to fathom characteristics of discourse, while the other provides for the study of metaphorical features in the context of discursive communication. The axiological aspect covers critical and descriptive studies and the epistemological angle comprises quantitive and qualitative methods in metaphorical studies. Other issues covered in the paper incorporate a thorough review of methods for identification of metaphors to include computer-assisted solutions (Word Sense Disambiguation, Categorisation, Metaphor Clusters) and numerical analysis of the metaphorical nature of discourse – descriptor analysis, metaphor power index, cluster analysis, and complex metaphor power analysis. On the one hand, the conceptualization of research papers boils down to major features of the discursive approach to metaphors and on the other, multiple studies of metaphors in the context of discourse pave the way for a discursive trend in cognitive metaphorology.

Abstract:There has been growing interest in investigating metaphors in literary works recently. However, most studies in the field of metaphor have only focused on its rhetorical function. However, little research has been carried out from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. This study adopts a cognitive linguistics approach to explore how conceptual metaphors function in literary works based on some analyses of the well-known novel The Old Man and the Sea from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. The results show that conceptual metaphors do play a very important role which helps people comprehend literary works much better. In the point of cognitive linguistics, metaphor is a kind of mapping tool and plays an important role in understanding some abstract concepts with specific things. Therefore, conceptual metaphors could definitely reveal the thinking mode of mankind to a great degree. And this study confirms the complex association between conceptual metaphors and The Old Man and the Sea. On the one hand, the findings in this study seek to understand and explain the role of metaphors in novel writing. On the other hand, it also presents a new way of appreciating literary works.

Abstract:In the past three decades, there was a stirring of interest in metaphor study both at home and abroad. Experts from a wide range of disciplines such as linguistics, philosophy, psychology and computer science, have approached metaphor from different perspectives. The formation of this multidisciplinary research paradigm not only deepened the understandings of metaphorical phenomena, but also raised some urgent questions that needed to be solved. One of the questions was how to review the various research results within a unified framework. Taking semiotics as a meta-discipline analytic perspective, this paper explored the general research trend of current metaphor study within the framework of semiotics based on the historical evolution and development status of metaphor study.

Abstract:In this essay, I challenge the use of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) in the premodern Chinese setting. The dominant, implicit assumption in the literature is that conclusions reached by CMT on the ways in which cognition operates can be applied <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">in toto</em> and without qualification onto the makers of classical Chinese texts. I want to challenge this assumption and argue that textual evidence from premodern Chinese points to a different cognitive process. Differences in the use and conceptualization of image-based thinking as well as differences in the understanding of the relationship between words, images, and the world reveal a different cognitive process. However, I do not wish to argue for a total abandonment of the insights of CMT. Rather, I call for the need to properly qualify its findings in light of premodern Chinese use and conceptions of image-based language.

Abstract:This article discusses how the study of metaphoric and more generally, figurative language use contributes to critical discourse analysis (CDA). It shows how cognitive linguists’ recognition of metaphor as a fundamental means of concept- and argument-building can add to CDA's account of meaning constitution in the social context. It then discusses discrepancies between the early model of conceptual metaphor theory and empirical data and argues that discursive-pragmatic factors as well as sociolinguistic variation have to be taken into account in order to make cognitive analyses more empirically and socially relevant. In conclusion, we sketch a modified cognitive approach informed by Relevance Theory within CDA.

Abstract:Abstract Cognitive metaphor theory provides a systematic framework to better understand the working mechanism of metaphor. Its recent development further allows translation researchers to have a clearer insight into the movement of metaphor across languages and culture. Building on an empirical study, this paper examines the complementary relationship between two prominent cognitive metaphor theories – Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and Conceptual Blending Theory (CBT), and discusses the practical contribution that this relationship could make to the existing research on metaphor translation. To construct a comparable basis for CMT and CBT, two parameters are adopted for data analysis, which is proven useful to serve the purpose. The two chosen parameters are: projection and provenance, denoting the content and the type of metaphor respectively. Metaphorical expressions analyzed in this paper are sourced from cosmology-themed articles published in Scientific American in 2017 and their Simplified Chinese translations published in Huanqiukexue . Findings show that delineated by the two parameters, CMT and CBT indeed share a complementary relationship owing to their different focuses and organizing mechanisms. Furthermore, the collaboration between CMT and CBT offers a well-rounded analytical framework for translation studies. In turn, the correlation between metaphor parameters and translation solutions provides detailed clues for studying metaphor across culture. Finally, the reflection of this dual-model parametric approach regarding its pros and cons is also shown to shed light on future research.

The writer thinks that metaphor isn′t a rhetorical figure according to the present definition of the rhetorical figure for the metaphor doesn′t accord with the double demands, specific result and specific form. Metaphor hasn′t the form mark. The thesis points out that the definition of the rhetorical figure should be revised if we continue to regard metaphor as a rhetorical figure.

Abstract:Based on LaKoff & Johnson’s metaphor,this paper argues that metaphor is merely a means of decoding and encoding concepts,but also a means of new linguistic forms. Metaphor can be divided into conventional and non-conventional metaphor,the for-mer yielding“non -prototype effects”while the latter“prototype effects”. It seems that cognitive science does not offer appropriate explanations for“prototype effects”. If the formation of“prototype effects”in language cannot be explained,it means that it is necessary to distinguish“prototype effects”from“non-prototype effects”in grammar study;in other words,it is necessary to distinguish conventional utterance from non-conventional utterance. It is due to a lacK of distinction between conventional and non-conventional utterances that problems occur in the construction of grammar system cog-nitive grammar( Construction Grammar).

Abstract:Cognitive linguistics holds that a metaphor is, by no means, a mere matter of language, rather, it is a system of concepts. This paper aims to research Chinese conceptual metaphors by analyzing Chinese advertisement discourse. It found six kinds of metaphorical concepts, namely, Market Is War; Objects Are Humans, Money is Fluid, Trend is a Tide, Disease Is the Enemy, and Warm Is Good. These six types are also common to the English culture. The paper then identifies three types of metaphorical concepts characteristic of Chinese culture and ways of thinking, embodying Chinese traditional values on nobility, family and patriotism.

Abstract:According to general metaphorical cognitive theories,the process of metaphorical interpretation is conceived as the mapping from the source domain to the target domain.It is believed by the authors that this mapping process by no means occurs in a "vacuum" condition,but is affected by both agentive and contextual factors.The agentive factors of metaphorical cognition mainly refer to the interpreter's familiarity with the metaphor and his/her knowledge background while the contextual factors chiefly refer to the textual context,situational context,and cultural context of the metaphor.These factors are indispensable and interrelated to the agent's process of metaphorical cognition.
