Abstract:With the rapid development of network technology, it is increasingly important to dynamically upgrade router's software. In this paper, the authors present new software architecture to be applied to extensible services router. The novel feature of the architecture is the ability to dynamically load and configure extensible components at run time. Each component implements one function such as packets classification, packets scheduling and routing protocol. We design a simple configuration language (ESRCL) to configure and manage the router. The architecture can be configured according to the packet flows. At present, a prototype system based on highly efficient router operating system (HEROS) has been finished.

Abstract:A great deal of research has contributed to the energy efficiency of battery-operated devices in the area of wireless communications, but recently, the energy consumption of the underlying network infrastructure has started to attract more attention as people have become aware of the significant fraction of energy consumed by the Internet of all the energy we consume. We argue that the architecture of routers in constructing the Internet can be improved so as to fully utilize chances to save energy related to transmission equipment. A green reconfigurable router is thus presented for this purpose.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of Internet, the research of the next generation router focuses on the extensible architecture router. As an important routing protocol, which has been deployed widely in the backbone, BGP is becoming critical to promote the models and algorithms under a distributed manner. This is one of the hot topics of the router's extensible architecture. This paper studies the path selection behavior, which is the fundamental operation in BGP. According to the analysis, a tree-based structure is proposed to model the computational process. Each node iterates the route selection in this model. Two algorithms are given in this paper for two classical extensible router architectures respectively. Then the performance promotions for the algorithms are evaluated theoretically. Finally, experiments are made to verify the model and the performance.

Abstract:Today most routers consist of line cards and centralized switching fabrics. It is now more and more difficult to increase the speed of line cards. Each generation of routers consume more power, and it gets more difficult to package a router in one rack of equipment. The research on routers shifts from single-rack systems to multi-rack ones. Most switches in routers today reside out of line cards. As the number of line cards increases, they will meet scalability problems. The Cellular Router (CR) architecture introduced in this paper is a new switching architecture. This architecture can be used in scalable routers and shows excellent properties. We give a detailed discussion of the CR architecture and show the implementation of the basic CR architecture. There exist some problems in the basic CR architecture. We solve them by introducing Mirror Points (MPs). We also introduce two minimal routing algorithms.

Abstract:A Single-Buffered (SB) router is a router where only one stage of shared buffering is sandwiched between two interconnects in comparison of a Combined Input and Output Queued (CIOQ) router where a central switch fabric is sandwiched between two stages of buffering. The notion of SB routers was firstly proposed by the High-Performance Networking Group (HPNG) of Stanford University, along with two promising designs of SB routers: one of which was Parallel Shared Memory (PSM) router and the other was Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) router. Admittedly, the work of HPNG deserved full credit, but all results presented by them appeared to relay on a Centralized Memory Management Algorithm (CMMA) which was essentially impractical because of the high processing and communication complexity. This paper attempts to make a scalable high-speed SB router completely practical by introducing a fully distributed architecture for managing the shared memory of SB routers. The resulting SB router is called as a Virtual Output and Input Queued (VOIQ) router. Furthermore, the scheme of VOIQ routers can not only eliminate the need for the CMMA scheduler, thus allowing a fully distributed implementation with low processing and communication complexity, but also provide QoS guarantees and efficiently support variable-length packets in this paper. In particular, the results of performance testing and the hardware implementation of our VOIQ-based router (NDSC® SR1880-T™ series) are illustrated at the end of this paper. The proposal of this paper is the first distributed scheme of how to design and implement SB routers publicized till now.

Abstract:The extensible router is the next generation router architecture. This paper studies the extensibility of the router control plane, which contains complicated modules such as routing protocol processing, router information management, etc. It is difficult to decide when to extending the control plane, and how many nodes are needed. Moreover, the module dispatching configurations is another issues. This paper describes the extensible architecture of the router system and the control plane. It defines three variables to evaluate the extensibility. And a two-step extensible model is provided to achieve the maximum extensibility under these evaluations. Finally, the experiments show that the model is correct and efficient.

Abstract:To satisfy the requirement that the router in network on chip can support multiple IP cores,and its latency performance is good,a router with a distributed routing and arbitrating structure is designed.Its arbitration module arbitrates on the request state of the current router and the state of the input buffer in the next router,this arbitration method improves the success rate of the packet transmission,so it decreases the transmission latency and improves latency performance of the router,meanwhile the simulation results indicate the router has good expansibility in area overhead.

Abstract:Active networks are a new kind of packet-switched networks in which packets have code fragments that are executed on the intermediary nodes (routers). The code can extend or modify the foundation architecture of a network. In this paper, the authors present a novel active network architecture combined with advantages of two major active networks technology based on extensible services router. The architecture consists of extensible service router, active extensible components server and key distribution center (KDC). Users can write extensible service components with programming interface. At the present time, we have finished the extensible services router prototype system based on Highly Efficient Router Operating System (HEROS), active extensible components server and KDC prototype system based on Linux.

Abstract:For the accuracy of the Intserv/RSVP and the scalability of the Diffserv, the two service models which IETF introduced to provide end-to-end quality of service, can complement each other in many respects and can coexist for a long time. Most of the specifications for "gluing" the Intserv and Diffserv and RSVP together have not been standardized yet, therefore an important challenge for router vendors is to design a RSVP-capable router that can support mixed services models at a flexible manner. In this paper, we present the design of an experimental RSVP-capable router that can provide transport of integrated traffic of different services. We implement a traffic control block on the data plane and RSVP daemon and management agents on the control plane. Finally, we present the test results to demonstrate that our router can indeed provide flexible and reliable support for multiple QoS services.

Abstract:High speed routers in Internet are becoming more powerful, as well as more energy hungry. In this paper, we present a power-efficient router named Green Router. Packet processing capacities in different line-cards, mainly including IP lookup and forwarding engines, are shared and modulated according to traffic loads. Unoccupied capacities are powered off in order to save power. Green Router separates a line-card into two parts: network interface card (DB) and packet processing card (MB), connected by a two-stage switch fabric. Traffic from all the DBs shares all the MBs in Green Router, thus can be aggregated to a few active MBs on demand and other inactive MBs can be shutdown to save power. We give Green Router's architectural design and propose a flow-slice-based dynamic allocation policy. Real-trace-driven experiments show that Green Router can save significant power and the impact of QoS is small.

Abstract:In order to migrate router software to different operating systems and extend operating systems functions, this paper designs and implements a multi-os platform for IP routers named RMOS (Router Multi-OS). Based on the micro-kernel architecture, RMOS is designed with a uniform programming interface. Besides hiding the internal details of operating systems, RMOS enhances the memory calls, monitors systematic resources and simulates real-time calls to the non-real-time operating systems. Manufacturers can provide various cost-performance routers with different operating systems according to market requirement by using RMOS, while reducing the cost of software transitions sharply. At present, RMOS can run on both VxWorks and Linux.

Abstract:Traffic control computation in high speed routers and switches is usually implemented with ad hoc hardware which is not reusable. This paper presents a reconfigurable architecture for network traffic control computations, based on an Augmented Finite State Machine (AFSM) controller, and the architecture is reconfigurable. The implementation of new traffic control features is realized in software, thus relieves the burden on hardware designers. Additionally, several traffic control algorithms in this paper are realized with the architecture to prove its hardware circuit high-speeded, reliable and stable. At last, with the electronic design automation tools (EDA), the frequency of the hardware circuit is up to 260MHz.

In response to this problem, we present a power-efficient router architecture named GreenRouter in this paper. GreenRouter separates a line card into two parts physically: the network interface card (named as DB) and the packet processing card (named as MB), which are interconnected by a two-stage unidirectional switch fabric. Traffic from all the DBs shares all the MBs in GreenRouter, thus the traffic can be aggregated to a few active MBs when traffic is light and the inactive MBs can be shut down to save power. We give the detailed architectural design of GreenRouter. Real-trace driven experiments show that GreenRouter can save about 50% power compared to the conventional router when the average traffic load is 30%, while providing quality of service guarantee at the same time.

Traffic from all DBs shares all the MBs in GreenRouter, thus can be aggregated to a few active MBs on demand and other MBs can be shut down to save power. Several key issues to this new architecture are addressed. We evaluate the power saving efficiency and give preliminary simulation results. GreenRouter can well adapt the traffic fluctuation and real trace evaluations over one week shows that up to 63.7% power saving can be achieved while QoS constraints are guaranteed.

Abstract:Modern routers are no longer simple packet routing equipment. They are extremely complex systems that incorporate various network management functionalities. Due to system complexity, most commercial routers are developed by a few equipment vendors in a closed development pattern, which not only hinders the broad participation of most routing function research and development (R&D) teams, but also deter the wide deployment of novel network architectures such as Software Defined Networks (SDNs). In this article a practical approach is introduced to build an open, flexible, and modularized reconfigurable router. A reconfigurable routing software platform supporting functional modules is dynamically assembled, replaced, and updated in the form of components. So far the platform has been adopted by vendors such as Ruijie Networks in their commercial routers, and it is running well all the time. Moreover, a component development environment is provided, which consists of a code editor, a multi-platform compiler, and an automatic testing tool. A component sharing website has also been built to encourage the participation of various R&D teams and promote the spread of our open reconfigurable development pattern.
