Abstract:AIM:To investigate the effects of ferrous supplement in the short term on hematological red blood cell count (RBC) and plasma iron (PI) concentration in young man basketball athletes trained in high intensity. METHODS: Thirty-five healthy national professional young man basketball athletes were randomly divided into 2 groups. One group (n=15, 15.2±1.0 years old) were supplemented ferrous sulfate 325 mg/d per person, 10 d, while the other group (n=20, 15.9±1.9 years old) as a control group were not. Then, RBC, hematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), red cell distribution width (RDW), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and PI concentration were detected during the periods of both the basic status and the training status. RESULTS: Compared with the levels of the basic status, there were no significant changes in RBC, Hct, MCV, RDW, Hb concentration, MCH and MCHC after 2 h train (P>0.05) in both groups. PI concentration was significantly deceased in the athletes without ferrous supplement after train (P<0.01), meanwhile, it was significantly increased in the ones with ferrous supplement (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Ferrous supplement in the short term exerts little effect on RBC and related parameters except PI concentration, which indicates the short-term ferrous supplement is of little value for young man basketball athletes.
