Abstract:Environmental purification using nano-TiO2 photocatalysts has attracted a great deal of attention in society. The super-hydrophilicity and self-cleaning surface of TiO2 thin film which is studied extensively establish new research area of photocatalytic thin film materials. Nano-TiO2 thin film coated on glass is effective in anti-fogging and antifouling. But TiO2 still exists disadvantages, such as hydrophilicity time and illumination conditions. In this paper we discuss how to improve surface hydrophilicity and light-sensitive property of TiO2 and make it apply to practice and create clean space to human.

Abstract:Aiming at the issue of width band gap, low utilization rate of solar energy and high recombination rate of photogenerated electrons-hole pairs of titanium dioxide photocatalyst, the mechanism of titanium dioxide photocatalysis was described. The methods of modified titanium dioxide such as noble metal modification, ion doping, semiconductor compound,surface photosensitization and the research progress were summarized on the basis of the photocatalysis mechanism. The research progression and application situation of modified titanium dioxide photocatalytic oxidation technology in the industrial and domestic wastewater treatment were discussed. The development prospects of titanium dioxide photocatalytic oxidation technology in water treatment were prospected. The research focuses of this field in future such as optimal combination of several element techniques and supported photocatalyst of titanium dioxide on the porous adsorbent carrier were pointed out.

Abstract:TiO2-diatomite photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel process with various pre-modified diatomite. In order to obtain diatomite with different surface characteristics, two modification approaches including calcination and phosphoric acid treatment on the micro-structure of diatomite are introduced. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and micromorphology analysis. The results indicate that, compared with pure TiO2, the anatase-to-rutile phase transition temperature of TiO2 loaded on diatomite carrier is significantly increased to nearly 900 degrees C, depending on the different pretreatment method of diatomite. The photocatalytic activities of different samples were evaluated by their degradation rate of methyl orange ( MO) dye under UV and visible-light irradiation. The samples prepared by phosphoric acid pretreatment method exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity. After 90 min of UV irradiation, about 90% of MO is decomposed by the best effective photocatalyst. And after 8 h visible-light irradiation, nearly 60% of MO is decomposed by the same sample. Further mechanism investigation reveals that the H3PO4 pretreatment process can obviously change the surface features of diatomite carrier, cause the formation of Si-O-Ti bond, increase the binding strength between TiO2 and diatomite, restrain crystal growth of loaded TiO2, and thus form thermal-stable meso-porous structure at the granular spaces. It helps to build micro-, meso- and macro-porous hierarchical porous structure in TiO2-diatomite, and improves the charge and mass transfer efficiency during catalyzing process, resulting in the significantly increased photocatalytic activity of TiO2-diatomite pretreated by phosphoric acid. Abstract:This review deals with the preparation of highly reactive titanium oxide photocatalysts at room temperature. The progresses in titanium oxide photocatalysts were summarized from three aspects: particle size minishing, visible-light sensitizing and photocatalytic reactivity enhancing. At last, the potential for the effective utilization of titanium oxide on normal life was prospected.

Abstract:A new photocatalyst, Nafion-coated photocatalyst, was prepared to improve the decomposition of the low-content pesticide in agricultural wastewater. The Nafion-coated P25 photocatalyst improved adsorption of TiO2 photocatalyst to ipconazole. The ipconazole can be decomposed 50% in 21 h, while the other organics do not be composed by Nafion-coated P25. XPS spectra suggested that the sulfonic acid group of Nafion located on the top of Nafion-coated layer. The Nafion improved the adsorption of P25 to ipconazole.

Abstract:It has become necessary to develop effective strategies to prevent and reduce water pollution as a result of the increase in dangerous pollutants in water reservoirs. Consequently, there is a need to design new catalyst materials to promote the efficiency of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the field of wastewater treatment plant to ensure the mineralization of trace organic contaminants. A notable approach gaining attention involves the coupling of sulfate radicals-based AOPs to photocatalysis or electrocatalysis processes, aiming to achieve the complete removal of refractory contaminants into water and carbon dioxide. Titanium dioxide as metal oxide has received great attention for its catalytic application in water purification. TiO2 catalysts offer a multitude of advantages in AOPs. They are characterized by their high photocatalytic activity under both ultraviolet and visible light, making them environmentally friendly due to the absence of toxic byproducts during oxidation. Their versatility is remarkable, finding utility in various AOPs, from photocatalysis to photo-Fenton processes. TiO2's durability ensures long-lasting catalytic activity, which is crucial for continuous treatment processes, and their cost-effectiveness is particularly advantageous. Furthermore, their chemical stability allows it to withstand varying pH conditions. However, the large band gap energy and low electrical conductivity hinder the catalytic reaction effectiveness. This review aims to examine various approaches to enhance the catalytic performance of titanium dioxide, with the objective of enabling more efficient water purification methods.

Abstract:A high-efficiency method to deal with pollutants must be found because environmental problems are becoming more serious. Photocatalytic oxidation technology as the environmentally-friendly treatment method can completely oxidate organic pollutants into pollution-free small-molecule inorganic substances without causing secondary pollution. As a widely used photocatalyst, titanium dioxide (TiO2) can greatly improve the degradation efficiency of pollutants, but several problems are noted in its practical application. TiO2 modified by different materials has received extensive attention in the field of photocatalysis because of its excellent physical and chemical properties compared with pure TiO2. In this review, we discuss the use of different materials for TiO2 modification, highlighting recent developments in the synthesis and application of TiO2 composites using different materials. Materials discussed in the article can be divided into nonmetallic and metallic. Mechanisms of how to improve catalytic performance of TiO2 after modification are discussed, and the future development of modified TiO2 is prospected.

Abstract:Photocatalysis as represented by titanium dioxide can make many toxic organic pollutants degraded or mineralized into biogradable small molecules or carbon dioxide, the process involving active species such as hydroxyl radicals. This article, based on the author's group work, attempts to outline the recent development in photocatalysis or photosenstiztation of titanium dioxide, iron (hydr)oxides, polyoxometalates (POM) and metal phthalocyanines (MPc) for water treatment. The emphasis is put on the semiconductor photocatalysis by titanium dioxide. The discussion includes: (1) detection of singlet oxygen, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, and various mechanisms proposed for their formation, (2) surface modification of catalyst with metal ions, POM and fluoride ions, and possible mechansims for their effects on the production of reactive species, and (3) immobilization of MPc onto ionic exchange resin and organoclay, and the influence on sorption and visible light induced degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous medium.

Abstract:The present research situation of photocatalysis technology and the mechanism of photocatalytic reaction of TiO2 thin film are discussed.The main factors that affect the photocatalytic activity of nano-TiO2 thin film are discussed in detail.The thickness and coating times of TiO2 thin film are regarded as having better linear relationship.The bigger the specific surface area of TiO2 thin film is,the smaller the hole and volume are,and the more uniform aperture distribution is,the higher photocatalytic activity of TiO2 is.Coupling of semiconductors can improve the separating results of charges of the system and expand the absorption spectrum of TiO2.Depositing of noble metals can promote the separating efficiency of current carriers on the surface of TiO2 thin film,which is beneficial to form more HO·.Metal ions doped enter into the crystal lattices of TiO2 can cause the defect of crystal lattices of TiO2,which restrains e-and h+ to combine,extends the life-span of current carriers,and thus,improves the photocatalytic activity of TiO2.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct differently exposed crystal surface structures by a novel water-plasma surface modification method to enhance specific photocatalytic reactions. Water plasma treatment of 001-faceted TiO 2 (T001) results in 2-fold and 12-fold increased photoactivity for hydrogen evolution and nitrogen fixation but significantly deteriorates its oxidation capability for photodegrading bisphenol A (BPA) contaminants. In contrast, treating 101-faceted TiO 2 (T101) under the same conditions accelerates the photodegradation of pollutants while weakening the photoreduction activity. Advanced characterizations reveal that water plasma treatment generates oxygen vacancy defects in T001, which can act as electron traps for improving the photoreduction capability. Differently, the surface hydroxyl groups on T101 caused by plasma discharging facilitate the generation of hydroxyl radicals, thus increasing its oxidation capability for contaminant degradation. This study not only sheds light on the relationship between the structure and activity of TiO 2 photocatalysts, but also presents a simple method for modifying a catalyst's active surface sites through water plasma treatment.

Abstract:The rapid population growth and industrial expansion worldwide have created serious water contamination concerns. To curb the pollution issue, it has become imperative to use a versatile material for the treatment. Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has been recognized as the most-studied nanoparticle in various fields of science and engineering due to its availability, low cost, efficiency, and other fascinating properties with a wide range of applications in modern technology. Recent studies revealed the photocatalytic activity of the material for the treatment of industrial effluents to promote environmental sustainability. With the wide band gap energy of 3.2 eV, TiO 2 can be activated under UV light; thus, many strategies have been proposed to extend its photoabsorption to the visible light region. In what follows, this has generated increasing attention to study its characteristics and structural modifications in different forms for photocatalytic applications. The present review provides an insight into the understanding of the synthesis methods of TiO 2 , the current progress in the treatment techniques for the degradation of wide environmental pollutants employing modified TiO 2 nanoparticles, and the factors affecting its photocatalytic activities. Further, recent developments in using titania for practical applications, the approach for designing novel nanomaterials, and the prospects and opportunities in this exciting area have been discussed.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is considered a promising photocatalyst due to its remarkable properties, such as photostability, low energy consumption and non-toxicity. However, some intrinsic drawbacks of TiO2 including high band gap energy and easy recombination of electron-hole pairs seriously hinder its practical application in photocatalysis. In this study, a 1-nm-thick carbon coating layer was introduced onto the surface of TiO2 (TiO2@C) by carbonizing kraft lignin to improve the photocatalytic performance. Compared with TiO2, TiO2@C shows absorption in both visible-light and UV-light regions, a decrease in band gap energy from 3.31 to 3.27 eV and excellent electronic conductivity, which favour the generation and separation of photo-generated carriers. In addition, the ultra-thin carbon coating can guarantee the penetration of sunlight, and TiO2@C, which remains afloat on the water, can contact with wastewater and absorb sufficient sunlight due to the hydrophobicity and loose structure. The investigation of photocatalytic degradation towards methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline (TC) under artificial visible-light irradiation demonstrates that the prepared TiO2@C has relatively superior photocatalytic activity. The absorbed MB and TC are almost completely degraded by TiO2@C within 10 min and 35 min, respectively. Given the simple modification and excellent photocatalysis, the prepared TiO2@C exhibits great potential applications in contaminated water treatment. This study provides a feasible carbon-coating strategy to improve the photocatalytic performance of TiO2, which can be extended to the rational design of other photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photocatalytic ozonation is considered to be a promising approach for the treatment of refractory organic pollutants, but the design of efficient catalyst remains a challenge. Surface modification provides a potential strategy to improve the activity of photocatalytic ozonation. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were first performed to check the interaction between O3 and TiO2-OH (surface hydroxylated TiO2) or TiO2-F (surface fluorinated TiO2), and the results suggest that TiO2-OH displays better O3 adsorption and activation than does TiO2-F, which is confirmed by experimental results. The surface hydroxyl groups greatly promote the O3 activation, which is beneficial for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Importantly, TiO2-OH displays better performance towards pollutants (such as berberine hydrochloride) removal than does TiO2-F and most reported ozonation photocatalysts. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency reaches 84.4 % within two hours. This work highlights the effect of surface hydroxylation on photocatalytic ozonation and provides ideas for the design of efficient photocatalytic ozonation catalysts.

Effective Regulation of Surface Bridging Hydroxyls on TiO2 for Superior Photocatalytic Activity Via Ozone Treatment

Abstract:A gas-solid and postsynthetic modification was proposed to enrich surface bridging hydroxyls (OHB) on TiO2 using ozone. It was found that the adsorbed ozone and its decomposition into oxygen atoms on oxygen vacancies would induce water dissociation and form OHB, narrowing the bandgap and enhancing the photoresponse. The increased OHB significantly doubled the efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers transfer, thus generating more reactive oxygen species. Additionally, OHB provided more adsorption sites for toluene, contributing to the excellent activity and stability. The degradation pathways of toluene containing OH addition and hydrogen abstraction were proposed based on in situ DRIFTS results. Ozone treatment was more effective than other reported surface treatments, and presented a universal improvement on both gas-solid and liquid-solid photodegradation. This work provides a facile, effective, and alternative strategy for the targeted regulation of OHB on TiO2 under mild conditions and insight into the mechanism underlying the process.

Abstract:Modification technology of nano-TiO2 coated on surface of purified diatomite by hydrolyzation-precipitation method was studied.Synthesized compound material was characterized by SEM,EDX,and XRD etc..Photocatalytic activities of the obtained samples were examined by degrading decolorization tests of Rhodanmine B solution.Analysis and test results showed that the SiO2 mass fraction of purified diatomite reached more than 90% and it′s a preferable carrier material;a compact film of TiO2 was coated on surface of the purified diatomite;crystal of TiO2 was anatase,and average crystal size was 10 nm;the synthesized compound material had good photocatalytic activity,and its decolorizing rate for Rhodanmine B solution was obviously higher than the nano-TiO2(P25) made by Degussa Company in Germany.
