Abstract:Multi-beam imaging sonar must avoid elements in the array being positioned so that grating lobes cause effects on images.Grating lobes are areas of the antenna's side lobe, off the main beam of reception, yet showing peaks in power density. When antenna element spacing is much greater than a half wavelength, the aliasing effect causes some grating lobes to approach the level of the main lobe.To solve this problem,an underwater acoustic imaging method with non-sinusoidal signals was proposed. In this method,cross-correlation between the received signal and a replica of the transmitted signal is obtained. The envelope of the correlated signal is then extracted to form the image.Grating lobes are completely absent in the beam pattern obtained with a rectangular envelope using the proposed method, therefore there is no need for the element spacing to be smaller than or equal to half the wavelength of the transmitted signal. Also, the beam pattern is sidelobe-free and can achieve improved angular resolution compared with the traditional method that uses a sinusoidal carrier signal. Finally, computer simulations for a point target and a volume target were carried out.The simulation results showed that the proposed method significantly improves overall image quality.
