Abstract:This paper aims to explain the cause of pragmatic failure with Verschueren's theory of adaptation. It points out that the main cause of pragmatic failure is that in the course of communication either the utterer or the interpreter fails to adapt language to communicative context.

Abstract:The present study, belonging to the scope of pragmatics, has centered its attention on new perspective on language put forward by Jef Verschueren. The pragmatic perspective specifies pragmatics as a general cognitive, social, and cultural perspective on linguistic phenomena in relation to their usage in forms of behavior. Adaptation theory describes and analyses language cognitively, socially and culturally. According to this perspective on language and adaptation theory, four aspects are of great importance: context, structure, dynamics and salience. Thus, this article has been intended to probe into the pragmatic perspective briefly.

Abstract:On the basis of the research achievements of the pragmatic failure,the concept of pragmatic failure is defined.Then the paper illustrates several phenomena,the mistakes in culture,written expression,social terms and words in the detailed situations.Further,two deeper reasons,cultural diversity and improper teaching methodology,for it are put forward.Finally,solutions---combining listening and speaking,combining reading and writing,are given.

Abstract:/ have given the term pragmatic failure' to the inability to understand 'what is meant by what is said'. In this paper I argue that pragmatic failure is an area of cross-cultural communication breakdown which has received very little attention from language teachers. I suggest that there is one area of pragmatic failure ('pragmalinguistic failure') which is fairly easy to overcome. It is simply a question of highly conventionalized usage which can be taught quite straightforwardly as 'part of the grammar'. The second area ('sociopragmatic failure') is much more difficult to deal with, since it involves the student's system of beliefs as much as his/her knowledge of the language. I argue that it is essential to avoid prescriptivism in this very sensitive area of language in use. To do so we must draw on insights from theoretical pragmatics and develop ways of heightening and refining students' metapragmatic awareness, so that they are able to express themselves as they choose.

A Study of Pragmatic Failures in Cross-Cultural Communication

Abstract:This paper focuses on pragmatic failures in cross-cultural communication and explores the difficult meanings in cross-cultural pragmatics. Through exploring the differences in address, greeting, politeness and other cross-cultural aspects, the author explains the cross-cultural basis for pragmatics. The author first explains certain concepts, including culture, pragmatics, pragmatic failures and cross-cultural communication, and then illustrates some pragmatic failures in cross-cultural communication and discusses the causes of these failures. Finally, she gives some suggestions on improving competence in cross-cultural communication. This thesis is intended to remind English learners of the importance of learning cultures of English-speaking countries and facilitate cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:Pragmatic failure includes language failure and social pragmatic failure. Pragmatic language errors are mainly caused by the negative transfer of the mother tongue and social pragmatic failure is mainly shown in pragmatic failure brought about by social habits and language philosophy. To prevent the occurrence of pragmatic failure in the cross-cultural communication, we should strengthen the improvement of students' English and Chinese languages, increase students' cultural sensitivity, ask them to effectively study foreign culture and pay more attention to the cultural differences in nonverbal communication so as to optimize cross-cultural pragmatic failure.

Abstract:There is a phenomenon: a non-native speaker may confront miscommunication even with a good master of the target language, which is known as “pragmatic failure”. Unlike linguistic errors, native speakers often fail to recognize it as such and attribute it to boorishness, which may do more harm to communication. Though pragmatic failure is a primary cause of cross-cultural communication breakdown, it receives little attention, especially in traditional foreign language teaching. This thesis intends to examine Chinese English majors’ pragmatic failure in verbal communication, probes into the causes of pragmatic failures and puts forward strategies in avoiding pragmatic failure.

Abstract:Based on Jenny Thomas’s dichotomous classification of pragmatic failure, this study proposes a new perspective and classifies pragmatic failure in interpretation into three categories: pragma-linguistic failure, socio-pragmatic failure and malaprop-pragmatic failure. Specific examples are given to illustrate the causes and effects of each category of pragmatic failure in interpretation. Meanwhile, this study establishes the “curriculum-textbook-teacher-teaching” scheme to develop students’ pragmatic competence in interpreting with which they are able to avoid pragmatic failure in interpretation.

Abstract:With the advent of globalization and informatization, cross-cultural communication has become more and more common, followed by the emergence of pragmatic failure. The existence of pragmatic failure will lead to the occurrence of communication barriers and the appearance of communication conflicts. Therefore, the systematic study of it has become a very meaningful topic, which has strong practical value in modern linguistics. This paper analyzes the pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication, discusses the types of pragma-linguistic failure and socio-pragmatic failure, and proposes measures to avoid pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication in order to avoid them and achieve successful communication.

Abstract:In this work, focusing on pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication, taking 5 business English majors as respondents, and using a case study of five mock questions for cross-cultural communication scenarios, to explore the pragmatic failure between these respondents. Pragmatic failure can be divided into pragmalinguistic faliure and sociopragmatic failure. Although respondents master the basic knowledge of cross-cultural, it’s inevitable for them to use the Chinese way of thinking when interacting with foreigners, so that they are prone to have pragmatic failures. To avoid business English majors having the pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication and improve their cross-cultural pragmatic competence, it needs both students and teachers endeavor to do.

Abstract:Understatement, as a pragmatic strategy of speech acts, has attracted great attention of many scholars who conducted their research from different viewpoints like psychology, sociology and linguistic pragmatics. After reviewing the previous research from the above viewpoints and pointing out their achievements and limitations, the authors of the paper attempt to apply Verschueren's adaptation theory to the study of understatement as a pragmatic strategy of speech acts, proposing that the use of understatement is a process of making linguistic choices in terms of variability, negotiability and adaptability, discussing the dynamics of its contextual adaptation. The authors conclude that understatements are actually the outcomes of linguistic choices interadaptable with language users' mental world, social world and physical world.

Abstract:Abstract For learners to communicate efficiently in the L2, they must avoid pragmatic failure. In many cases, teachers' praxis centres on the learner's performance in the L2 or his role as a speaker, which neglects the importance of his role as interpreter of utterances. Assuming that, as hearers, learners also have a responsibility to avoid pragmatic failure, this paper endorses the relevance-theoretic view of communication, its explanation about why misunderstandings arise, and the belief that the learner's sophistication in understanding is not the same as that of a native. Therefore, it argues that learners must be taught to be cautious optimistic hearers. As a result, learners will be able to reject interpretations of utterances, which, due to the linguistic or cultural incompetence of their native or non-native interlocutors in the L2 system, they are led to regard as relevant enough although their interlocutors may have expected them to arrive at a different interpretation.

Abstract:Stemming from real or seeming incompetence, the pragmatic failures L2 learners and LF speakers often commit may lead to stereotyping and negative labelling as a consequence of hearers' mindreading abilities and relevance-driven interpretation of communicative behaviour. Pragmatic incompetence may incite hearers to erroneously attribute beliefs, intentions or feelings to speakers because of lowered epistemic vigilance and to sustain a specific type of epistemic injustice, which, borrowing from social epistemology, is here labelled pragmatic-hermeneutical injustice. Pragmatic-hermeneutical injustices could be avoided or overcome if hearers' vigilance triggered a shift of processing strategy from naïve optimism to cautious optimism.

Abstract:Cross-cultural verbal communication is a process of understanding,comprehending and negotiating what constitutes appropriate speech act between Addresser and Addressee.In cross-cultural verbal communication,there exist four cognitive presuppositions of appropriate performance and appropriate interpretation of speech act: corresponding encoding of corresponding illocutionary force,different encoding of different illocutionary force,corresponding encoding of different illocutionary force,different encoding of corresponding illocutionary force.Cognitive presuppositions do not appear on the surface of verbal or written language,but restrict Addresser's construction and Addressee's interpretation of speech act model.With shared cognitive presuppositions,it is easy for cross-cultural communication to be successful.Otherwise,it is easy to break down.

Abstract:The paper attempts to apply Verschueren’s adaptation theory to the study of on-line identity construction in the course of communication.Based on Verschueren’s framework and the data drawn from naturally occurring medical genetic consultations,this article showed how people made linguistic choices to construct their pragmatic identity in terms of variability,negotiability and adaptability,and discuss the dynamics of its contextual adaptation with their mental world, social world,and physical world.This study revealed the variability,negotiability and adaptability of pragmatic identity to meet the communicative goals.The pragmatic identity is not fixed;it is the result of negotiation between communicators.

Abstract:Being delimitated from the following three aspects in an ordered way: ways of realization, receivers of impoliteness, and the speaker's intention and the hearer's acceptance, impolite phenomena can be categorized into three classes: non-strategic impoliteness, strategic impoliteness and impoliteness due to pragmatic failures. Different kinds of impoliteness are generated from different reasons. This paper is a special study on impoliteness from the adaptation perspective with the main purpose of drawing people's attention to this problem. In the paper the authors improve the adaptation model of contextual correlates proposed by Verschueren in his theory of linguistic adaptation to find out an adaptation model of linguistic choices with high maneuverability. Then the reasons for the generation of various impoliteness are analyzed based on the improved adaptation model, which provide us a clearer view of impoliteness and ensure us the discovery of fundamental ways to solve the problem of impoliteness.
