Perspectives on Patient Access to Radiation Oncology Facilities and Services in Mainland China

Abstract:To further understand the current basic situation of radiotherapy in mainland China, the rational allocation of personnel and equipment resources, and to promote the development of radiation therapy in China, the Chinese Society of Radiation Therapy Organization made the seventh national survey. To establish the national radiotherapy information survey office, the survey was conducted efficiently on a website by the directors of every hospital which list was given by the chairman of every province during the period from October 8, 2015 to January 17, 2016. As of January 17, 2016, there are 1,413 radiotherapy units in the Chinese mainland, (1)employees:52,496 in total, among which there are 15,839 physicians (4,824 with advanced professional titles), 8,542 therapists (260 with advanced professional titles),3,292 physicists (562 with advanced professional titles), 938 maintenance engineers (120 with advanced professional titles).(2) radiation equipment: 1930 Linear accelerators, 96 Co-60 teletherapy units, 173 X-knife units, 212 γ-knife units, 382 Ir-192 brachytherapy units, 436 Co-60 brachytherapy units, 1,051 X-ray simulators, 1,353 CT-simulators , 642 MRI-simulators, 978 sets of Multileaf collimators, 1,922 sets of Treatment Planning Systems, 974 sets of radiation network systems. (3)Quality Control devices: 1,792 dosimeters, 2,143 ionization chambers, 935 2-D array dosimeters, 540 3-D dosimeters verification systems, 844 anthropomorphic phantoms, 1,168 water equivalent phantoms. (4) Therapeutic beds: 102,170beds, 76612 patients treated per day and 919339 patients treated per year. The research shows that in the past 30 years the radiotherapy units, radiotherapy personnel and radiotherapy equipment have been increased obviously. The distribution of radiotherapy units and radiotherapy equipment and the structure of radiotherapy personnel are reasonable. However, according to international standard, the number of radiotherapy personnel and radiotherapy equipment in China has not met the need of the market. There is sharp contrast between the developed area in east of China and the less developed area in west of China. Therefore, there will be huge space for the development of radiotherapy.
