Alterations of retinoid acid receptor (RARβ) expression in esophageal precancerous and cancerous lesions from the subjects at high and low-incidence areas for esophageal cancer in Henan

Abstract:Aim: To characterize the changes of retinoic acid receptor β (RARβ) expression in esophageal precancerous and cancerous lesions from the subjects at high and low incidence areas for esophageal cancer in Henan. Methods: Immunohistochemistry (ABC) and histopathological methods were used to determine the expression of RARβ. Results: Positive immunoreactivity of RARβ was observed in the normal tissues and the lesions at different degrees of severity on the subjects from the high incidence area (HIA) and low incidence area (LIA). The positive immunoreactivity was chiefly located at the cell membrane and cytoplasma. From normal to basal cell hyperplasia (BCH) to dysplasia (DYS) to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), the RARβ positive immunostaining rates were 16%,27%,31% and 60%, respectively in HIA,and 13%,38%, 40% and 66%, respectively in LIA. From poorly to moderate,and well differentiated SCC, the positive rates of RARβ were 25%,73% and 95% in HIA, respectively and 39%,77% and 95% in LIA, respectively.Both in HIA and LIA, significant difference occurred between poorly to moderate and well differentiated SCC ( P 0.01). Conclusion: The present results indicate that the alternations of RARβ may be correlated with the differentiation of esophageal SCC.
