Abstract:【Objective】To evaluate the feasibility,safety and short-term efficacy of laparoscopic TME with anal sphincter preservation in comparison with open procedure for low or ultra-low rectal cancer.【Methods】From Jan.2009 to Dec.2011,52 patients with lower or ultra-low rectal cancer underwent laparoscopic TME low anal sphincter preservation procedure,while 46 cases received open procedure.The clinicopathological data and short-term efficacy was compared.【Results】All patients received anal sphincter preservation procedure successfully.The mean operative blood loss,postoperative time of hospital stay and bowel gas passage in laparoscopic group were better than that in open group(both P <0.05).There was no significant difference in term of operation time,volume,the number of lymphonode dissection and anal function between these two group(both P >0.05).【Conclusion】Laparoscopic TME low anal sphincter preservation procedure is a feasible,safe and minimally invasive technique for low or ultralow rectal cancer,which can get radical effect of TME.
