Heritability of personality disorders and the interaction between paternal and maternal influences in the development of personality disorders

Abstract:Objective:To estimate the heritability of personality disorder(PD)using a sample of high-school students and their parents living in Beijing,China.Methods:In this study,9892 high school students were selected by stratified cluster sampling method.The students and their parents were assessed with the International Personality Diagnostic Examination(IPDE),Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4(PDQ-4),Egma Minnen av Bardndosnauppfor-stran(EMBU),and a general information questionnaire.Heritability was calculated using cross-sectional and case-control study method.The influences of the father and the mother were examined.Results:The heritability for overall PD was > 0.7;and the heritability for each cluster PD was > 0.3.The paternal influence had a larger impact as compared to the maternal influence on the occurrence of PD in offspring.The odds ratio for paternal PD only and offspring PD was 12.9;the corresponding odds ratio for maternal PD only was 3.3.In contrast,the odds ratio for both paternal and maternal PD was 123.2.Conclusion:This study supports the role of genetic influences in the development of personality disoerders.There may be an interaction between paternal and maternal influences.
