Abstract:In recent years, controlled environment agriculture (CEA), a new sustainable agricultural technology, has gained increasing attention from researchers. Light quality, especially red or blue light, plays a crucial role in plant growth and is an important adjustment parameter of CEA. Red clover ( Trifolium pratense L.) is a globally important legume with a high protein content and strong antioxidant properties. However, the response of T. pratense to light quality is poorly understood. In this study, the changes in plant growth, photosynthesis indices, and isoflavone and volatile organic compound accumulation under three light treatments (red:blue = 0:1, 1:1, 1:0) with two nanoiron fertilizer conditions (0 and 10 mg L −1 ) for 21 days were investigated. The results showed that blue light, which is critical for plant growth and effective in the accumulation of secondary metabolites, was favorable for photosynthesis, was positively correlated with the net photosynthetic rate (Ph), and noticeably increased the leaf area and aboveground biomass by more than 30% compared to red light. Most saccharides and esters accumulated, and lower values of the stable isotopes δ 13 C and δ 15 N were detected in the blue light treatment group, indicating that the increase in photosynthesis might have occurred through the stomatal pathway. Mixed light positively regulated the synthesis of secondary metabolites, including sterols, terpenoids, and isoflavones, which are related to abiotic stress defense responses. Nanoiron fertilizer significantly increased the chlorophyll content under the different light treatments, and an increasing trend was observed in the photosynthetic parameters under red light. Nanoiron fertilizer generally reduced the gap between the three light treatments and exhibited a considerable buffering effect under these treatments. The results obtained in this study contribute to understanding the relationship between photosynthesis and secondary metabolism under different light qualities, which can provide a theoretical basis for optimizing the lighting environment in controllable agriculture.
