Abstract:Existing measures for preventing frost heave are limited to soil modification, water control, and increasing thermal resistance. However, these measures only delay the development of frost heave, and weaken the degree of its deformation; therefore, they often lack sufficient effectiveness and activeness. In this study, based on a method of active-temperature control and the characteristics of railway embankments in seasonally frozen soil regions, a heating method combining shallow geothermal energy and working compressor is employed; this method also utilizes a solar energy to power the working compressor. The method is used to actively heat an embankment during winters to compensate for excessive heat loss and to eliminate frost heave. A monomer-separated artificial heating supply pipe is developed, which is mainly composed of radiator tube, collector tube, working compressor, and capillary tube. In addition, a theoretical calculation system is constructed to manufacture the monomer-separated artificial heating supply pipe. An experiment was conducted to study the heating effectiveness of the monomer-separated artificial heating supply pipe. The test results show that the radiator tube can reach a constant temperature in 6 h under an intermittent operation mode, with highest temperature of 60 °C. The intermittent operation mode has little influence on the wall temperature of the radiator tube, whereas it is beneficial to the shallow geothermal energy supply of the soil around the collector tube. The temperature of soil around the radiator tube rises rapidly owing to the heat exchange between the radiator tube and surrounding soils, effectively compensating for the heat loss of the soil in winter. In addition, the soil temperature is directly related to operation time, distance, and location. In coarse-grained soil embankment, the effective heating radius of the monomer-separated artificial heating supply pipe is larger than 1.0 m, which shows a high degree of matching with the frozen depth of railway embankments in seasonally frozen soil regions. The feasibility of applying the monomer-separated artificial heating supply pipe to railway embankments in seasonally frozen soil regions is verified.
