Applying self-management education to improve the health status of patients following peritoneal dialysis

Abstract:Objective To analyze the effect of self-management education for continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients on their healthy status. Methods Twenty-six patients who had received peritoneal dialysis for at least 6 months and whose condition were stable in the past 6 months were enrolled in this study. They were taught the knowledge about PD and the methods to solve the problems in daily dialysis life. In order to improve patients' ability of self-management, we used various education styles, such as group discussion, patients' team activities and individual instructions. After 6 months' education, we compared the patients' volume status, adequacy of dialysis, nutritional status, quality of life, rehabilitation status, self-management capacity and self-efficacy levels. Results After 6 months, the patients' urine volume and residual renal function decreased, the adequacy of dialysis (kt/v and Ccr) was not changed. But the volume status, quality of life and rehabilitation status were improved, and the nutritional status was not deteriorated. Meanwhile, the patients' self-management capacity and self efficacy level were increased. Conclusions Self-management education can improve continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients'self-management capacity and self efficacy level, and accordingly improve their holistic healthy status.
