Abstract:Solid phase microextration( SPME) is a novel sample collection and preparation technique,which combines with sample extraction,isolation,concentration and injection. This paper reviewed the recent development of SMPE method in micro-and trace analysis of volatile organic compounds( VOCs) in air. It introduced the realization of the SPME device and operation conditions,which included fibres of SPME,extraction time,temperature and humidity,desorption time and temperature,and so on. Some examples of successful application were also introduced in the paper. It would be considered as a reference for researchers who work on the detection of air matrices.

Abstract:Solid-phase microextraction (SPME), which was originally developed at the end of 1980's, is a kind of new solvent-free method used in the pretreatment of environmental samples. Combined with GC or HPLC, it can analyze trace level of organic compounds in environmental samples efficiently and quickly. There has been great development and changes in the aspects of extraction devices, extraction methods and subsequent analysis instruments, which makes the application region wider. In this paper the development trend of SPME in the future is also presented.

Abstract:Solid phase microextraction (SPME) has emerged as a versatile sample preparation technique for the preconcentration of a broad range of compounds with various polarities, especially in environmental studies. SPME has demonstrated its eco-friendly credentials, significantly reducing the reliance on solvents. The use of biocompatible materials as a coating recipe facilitates the acceptance of SPME devices in analytical chemistry, primarily in the monitoring of environmental pollutants such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and pesticides from the various environmental matrices. During the last few years, investigators have reported an improvement in the SPME enrichment technique after changing the coating recipe, geometries, and sampling procedure from the complex matrices. Furthermore, the development of various geometries of SPME with large surface areas has enhanced the extraction efficiency of environmental pollutants. As a miniaturized sample preparation technique, SPME significantly reduces the solvent usage, suggesting a potential platform for green chemistry-based research for water, air, and soil analysis. This review article summarizes the evolution of SPME, its various modes, the application of SPME, recent innovations, and prospects for the determination of water, air, and soil pollution. The advantages and disadvantages of SPME in comparison to other extraction techniques have been discussed here. This review serves as a valuable resource for investigators working in sustainable environmental research.

Abstract:Pesticides, widely applied in agriculture, can produce a variety of transformation products and their continuous use causes deleterious effects to ecosystem. Efficient and sensitive analytical techniques for enrichment and analysis of pesticides samples are highly required. Compared with other extraction methods, solid-phase micro extraction is a solvent free, cost effective, robust, versatile, and high throughput sample preparation technique, especially for the analysis of pesticides from complicated matrices. Coupling of solid-phase micro extraction with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry has been extensively applied in pesticide analysis. On the other hand, in recent years, combination of fast separation using solid-phase micro extraction and rapid detection using ambient mass spectrometry is providing highly efficient pesticide screening. This article summarizes the applications of solid-phase micro extraction coupled to mass spectrometry for pesticides analysis.

Abstract:Hyphenation of solid-phase microextraction(SPME),which integrates sample extraction,concentration,desorption and injection in one step,with HPLC is widely applied to analyze non-volatile substance residues quantitatively and qualitatively.However semi-automation,lack of candidate SPME coating,instability of the coating restricted the progress and application of SPME-HPLC.Corresponding strategies and recent progress are stated in detail,including different SPME-HPLC interfaces,novel coating methods and promising SPME materials.The future of SPME-HPLC aims at complete automation,time-saving,high throughput and high sensitivity.

This paper reviews the application of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for the analysis of flavors/off-flavors in wine, fruits, meats, cereal products and non-volatile compounds such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, endogenous substances and other contaminants in food samples. The future developments and potential applications of SPME methods in food analysis was looked ahead.

Abstract:Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are important pollutants in indoor environments. Quantification of gaseous SVOC concentrations is essential to assess the pollution levels. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is considered to be an attractive sampling technique with merits, including simplicity of use, rapid sampling, and solvent free. However, the applications of SPME for sampling gaseous SVOCs are often limited by the fluctuating velocity of indoor air (leading to an unstable sampling rate) and the uncertainties associated with the traditional calibration of SPME. Therefore, we established an SPME-based active sampler to ensure the stable sampling of SVOCs in fluctuating air and developed a two-step calibration method based on the sampling principle of SPME. The presented method and a traditional method (sorbent tubes packed with Tenax TA) were simultaneously used to measure SVOC concentrations in an airstream generated in experiments. Three typical indoor SVOCs, diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP), and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBzP) were chosen as the analytes. Mean concentrations measured by SPME agreed well with the sorbent tubes (relative deviations <12%), supporting the feasibility of the presented method. Further studies are expected to facilitate the application of the presented method (especially the problem associated with the sampling-tube loss of low volatile SVOCs).

Abstract:Poly (methylphenylvinylsiloxane) (PMPVS) coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was first prepared by using sol-gel approach and cross-linking of free radical initiation. The extraction properties of the novel coating for aromatic compounds were investigated using a self-made SPME device coupled with a gas chromatograph-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The coating provided high surface areas and allowed high extraction efficiency. Compared with some commercial SPME stationary phases, the new phase showed better selectivity and sensitivity toward aromatic compounds. Furthermore, PMPVS coating showed good thermal stability and longer lifetime.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent developments of solid phase microextraction (SPME) and its application to the analysis of organometallic species of lead, arsenic, mercury, tin, and selenium by hyphenation with HPLC-GC-atomic spectrometry. In the first part, a background of the technique is given in terms of derivatization, fibers used, extraction and desorption conditions. The second part summarizes typical SPME applications to the determination of organometallic species and the main experimental conditions with the aid of specific examples. Most of the applications comprise alkylation with NaBEt4 and headspace extraction followed by gas chromatographic separation with a suitable detector.

Abstract:Semivolatile organic compounds are a category of organic micropollutants including phthalate esters, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and so on, which are commonly analyzed by solid-phase extraction followed by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. In this work, a highly sensitive and feasible method of magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with gas chromatography with mass spectrometry was established for the determination of semivolatile organic compounds in water. The novel method was based on a permanent magnetic resin with uniform particle size and high surface area (1154.3 m2 /g). The results demonstrated that the extraction efficiency of the resin was superior to that of a C18 cartridge. The method was proved to be of satisfactory recoveries (75-115.7%) and limits of detection and quantification (0.063-6.524 and 0.212-21.745 μg/L, respectively). The method was applied to the analysis of semivolatile organic compounds in the midstream Huai River. It was observed that polychlorinated biphenyls exceeded current water standards. To further illustrate the potential effects on human health, health risk assessment was conducted based on the obtained data. The existence of health risk was proved, with hexachlorobenzene and 2,2',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl as the major causes. The method possesses the characteristics of high efficiency and rapid analysis, offering a good prospect of applications in large quantities of practical water.

This is partly owing to the development of SPME coatings. One of the key factors affecting the extraction performances, such as the sensitivity, selectivity, and reproducibility, is the properties of the coatings on SPME fibers. Abstract:For the high enrichment of Solid Phase Micro-extraction(SPME) and the high precision of Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry,SPME/GC-MS was used in the analysis of some common fire debris that was taken from a simulated arson scene.The presence of gasoline can be identified accurately by comparing some target compounds.With the help of the diagnostic ratio of the area of 2-Methylbenzene,3-Methylbenzene,4-Methylbenzene,Methylnaphthalene and their relevant isomers,the interference of background in analysis can be reduced.The Similarity Analysis by vectorial angel method showed the effect of interference matrices.

Abstract:The practice of odorant analysis can often be very challenging because odorants are usually composed of a host of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low concentrations. Preconcentration with solid phase microextraction (SPME) is a conventional technique for the enrichment of these volatile compounds before analysis by headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). However, commercially available SPME products usually bear the defects of weak mechanical strength and high cost. In this work, novel SPME fibers were prepared by a one-pot synthesis procedure from divinylbenzene (DVB), porous carbon powder (Carbon) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Factors that influence the extraction efficiency, such as extraction temperature, extraction time, salting effects, pH, stirring rate, desorption temperature and time, were optimized. VOCs in landfills pose a great threat to human health and the environment. The new SPME fibers were successfully applied in the analysis of VOCs from the leachate of a cyanobacteria landfill. Quantification methods of major odor contributors were established, and a good linearity (r > 0.998) was obtained, with detection limits in the range of 0.30–0.50 ng/L. Compared to commercial SPME fibers, the new material has higher extraction efficacy and higher precision. Hence, it is suitable for the determination of hazardous odorants of various sources.

Abstract:Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a well-established sample-preparation technique for environmental studies. The application of SPME has extended from the headspace extraction of volatile compounds to the capture of active components in living organisms via the direct immersion of SPME probes into the tissue (in vivo SPME). The development of biocompatible coatings and the availability of different calibration approaches enable the in vivo sampling of exogenous and endogenous compounds from the living plants and animals without the need for tissue collection. In addition, new geometries such as thin-film coatings, needle-trap devices, recession needles, coated tips, and blades have increased the sensitivity and robustness of in vivo sampling. In this paper, we detail the fundamentals of in vivo SPME, including the various extraction modes, coating geometries, calibration methods, and data analysis methods that are commonly employed. We also discuss recent applications of in vivo SPME in environmental studies and in the analysis of pollutants in plant and animal tissues, as well as in human saliva, breath, and skin analysis. As we show, in vivo SPME has tremendous potential for the targeted and untargeted screening of small molecules in living organisms for environmental monitoring applications.

Abstract:This chapter provides a summary of the recently published solid-phase microextraction (SPME) studies and reviews in the field of food and fragrance analysis, together with several case studies highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of this technique compared to other commonly used isolation techniques. Food is a very complex matrix, and several procedures are typically used in order to prepare a food sample for the final gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), or other analysis. In order to prepare a representative sample, solid matrices need to be homogenized and liquid or gaseous samples must be properly stirred prior to the isolation of the target analytes from the examined matrix. Solid-phase microextraction has become one of the most generally used extraction procedures. When it comes to SPME method development for food/fragrance samples, optimization of the extraction process must be made considering the complexity of examined samples as well as the fact that trace target analytes may be co-extracted with interfering matrix components. The parameters that are typically critically evaluated involve the implementation of selective extraction phases towards a specific group of target analytes that simultaneously demonstrate substantially reduced selectivity and sensitivity for interfering non-targeted matrix components. In those cases involving non-targeted fingerprinting and profiling food applications, the objective of coating selection is the opposite: comprehensive metabolite coverage requiring a non-selective extraction phase. These critical requirements have been recently addressed in order to standardize SPME coating selection for a wide range of analytes frequently encountered in food/fragrance matrices and having differing physico-chemical properties and evaluate the performance of commercial coatings in non-targeted studies of food/plant systems (metabolomics).
