Abstract:We can't deny the fact that banks play a key role in our society, while it is impossible to avoid banking crisis even under the strictest supervision. The current legal system in China for banking crisis management is imperfect. It lacks both sufficient means to resort to, and enough protection for individual depositors in case of a crisis. The main practices in foreign developed countries are the lender of last resort (LOLR), the deposit insurance system and Market-withdrawal system. LOLR aims to save the banks which run into payment crisis temporarily. Usually this operation is performed by a country's central bank. The deposit insurance system is designed to divert the risk. Once a bank crisis occurs, the deposit insurance institution will repay the depositors' deposit in certain proportion. In order to make banks adaptable to market competition, we should enact banks market withdrawal legislation.We need to improve our bank crisis management mechanism in following aspects: (a) improving the restructuring mechanism; (b) constructing the emergency measures; (c) improving the merge and bankruptcy system; (d) reforming the lender of last resort system; and (e) establishing the deposit insurance system as soon as possible. We need to enact detail rules to regulate the take-over system, including the definition, precondition, object, terms, limitation and redress of the take-over action. Apart from take-over system, we should form certain short-term contingency plans. Banks tend to merge to improve their competitiveness and some of them can't avoid bankruptcy in market economy, so we should enact relevant laws and regulations. Since abuses of LOLR system will result in disrupting the market competitive system and lead to moral hazard, it is necessary to formulate strict standards in order to apply LOLR system cautiously. The deposit insurance system, which has proven satisfactory in western developed countries for decades, needs to be established in our country as soon as possible.
Excess Liquidity and Credit Misallocation: Evidence from China

Abstract:China's M2/GDP ratio continues to rise despite having reached the highest tier in the world, but there is no consensus on its driving forces. In this paper, we investigate this puzzle empirically, using different levels of data. We first estimate the degree of the excess liquidity in China based on cross-country regressions. Our results show that China's excess liquidity is 50 percent of that implied by the cross-country benchmark. Province-level evidence shows that credit misallocation between state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private enterprises (PEs) may lead to credit inefficiency and hence generate excess liquidity. We further validate this finding using manufacturing firm-level data, and show that credit misallocation has deteriorated since the Four Trillion Yuan Stimulus Plan since 2008. These facts unveil more challenges for the ongoing deleveraging campaign and SOE reform.
Bank liquidity and the risk-taking channel of monetary policy: An empirical study of the banking system in China

Abstract:This paper addresses the impact of bank liquidity on risk-taking behaviour of Chinese banks, and provides evidence for a risk-taking channel of monetary policy operating through bank liquidity. By using bank-level panel data from 123 Chinese commercial banks during 2003–2018, it is found that banks facing lower liquidity risk will be encouraged to take more risk. Moreover, loose monetary policy leads to more aggressive risk-taking by reducing the bank liquidity risk, namely a liquidity risk-taking channel of monetary policy. These findings suggest that authorities should give full consideration to the influence of the monetary policy on bank risk-taking through bank liquidity channels.

Abstract:Considerable excess deposits over loans of Chinese commercial banks will decrease their operational profits and also foretells the possible financial default risks.Overcoming the negative effects of excess liquidity of Chinese commercial banks lies in the following two key factors: First,the banks should face the fact of "double excess"—excess liquidity of banks and excess productivity of firms,adjust the structure and scales of loan stocks and increments,improve ability to prevent loan risks,reform the traditional operation method that greatly relies on interest income business,and diversify financial services and clients by M&A,restructuring,financial innovation and inter-bank cooperation.Second,the macro operational environment of commercial banks should be improved: fully carrying out reform of interest marketization,greatly enlarging operational scopes of commercial banks,and really strengthening operational autonomy of commercial banks.

Abstract:<p>We examine the impact of bank liquidity creation on systemic risk and its heterogeneous impact over the network connectedness. We find that excessive liquidity creation increases the systemic risk with a "U shape" relationship, while internal and external liquidity creation drives systemic risk in a different way. Network connectedness of banks strengthens the relationship between liquidity creation and systemic risk. Our results provide supporting evidence on regulating bank liquidity creation to enhance the financial stability.</p>

Abstract:Using a comprehensive data of 634 A-share listed firms and 128 commercial banks from 2012 to 2020 in China, and a newly constructed loan-weighted liquidity hoarding (LWLH) variable to measure a firm’s exposure to bank liquidity hoarding shocks, this paper investigates the impact of bank liquidity hoarding on corporate maturity mismatch. We find LWLH would aggravate the corporate maturity mismatch of investment and financing, mainly through shortening firms’ loan maturities or reducing the proportions of long-term credits. The aggregation effects are more prevalent for firms with lower internal financing capacity and higher industry competition. These results imply that the maturity mismatch of listed companies in China is more likely to be an alternative to deal with financial repression, rather than an active behavior for reducing financing costs.

Abstract:This paper takes all banking enterprises among Chinese listed companies as the research sample and examines the impact of the level of digitalization in commercial banks on bank liquidity creation through constructing an empirical econometric model. The research results show that the level of digitalization in commercial banks can significantly enhance the level of bank liquidity creation. Additionally, the results of heterogeneity tests indicate that the effect of commercial banks' digitalization level on the enhancement of bank liquidity creation varies with the size of the commercial banks and the degree of integration between industry and finance.

Abstract:The banking industry plays a pivotal role in any economy, and its stability is paramount for societal and economic well-being. This research paper delves into the intricate relationship between liquidity regulation, bank risk-taking, and the shadow banking sector, focusing on Chinese commercial banks. With the introduction of the Net Stable Funding Ratio (NSFR) and its integration into the macroprudential regulatory framework, this study takes a novel approach to comprehensively analyze how adjustments in bank asset structures impact risk-taking behavior and the scale of shadow banking from a micro perspective. This paper's contributions are manifold. Firstly, it innovatively incorporates NSFR and Capital Adequacy Ratio into the DLM model, providing a unified theoretical framework to analyze liquidity management, risk-taking, and shadow banking. It uncovers the micro-level mechanisms driving commercial banks' liquidity behavior and their relationship with the shadow banking sector. Secondly, it goes beyond empirical verification and examines the logical relationship between liquidity regulation, bank risk-taking, and shadow banking. Thirdly, the paper introduces the " " indicator for NSFR, offering a differential approach to liquidity supervision and macroprudential regulation. Empirical analysis, spanning from 2012 to 2021 and covering 116 banks, supports the findings. The results suggest optimizing the internal structure of non-credit assets can significantly reduce bank risk-taking while improving NSFR for banks with " " greater than 0. Conversely, for banks with " " less than 0, adjusting the internal structure of credit assets can achieve similar objectives. These insights pave the way for more effective liquidity management practices and contribute to the dual goals of liquidity supervision and risk control. Policy recommendations include differentiated supervision based on " " values, encouraging banks to optimize their asset structures, and diversifying stable funding sources to enhance banking stability and safety. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on enhancing financial stability and aligning with the goals of modern banking regulation.

Abstract:Does state ownership breed risk-taking behavior in commercial banks? This paper examines this issue using a panel of Chinese banks. We find that state-ownership is in general associated with higher risks. In addition, we find that banks controlled by the central government have the highest credit risk, while those owned by local governments have the lowest capital adequacy ratio and liquidity ratio. By compiling a complete list of cross-border acquisitions in China's banking sector, we investigate the impact of foreign acquisition on state-owned banks' risk-taking using differences-in-differences and matching estimators. We find that foreign acquisition has a reducing effect on state-owned banks' risk-taking and this effect is particularly significant for banks that are controlled by central or local government. We also find that this risk-reducing effect depends on the percentage of foreign ownership, the local business involvement of the foreign investors, and the number of foreign members on the banks' boards of directors.

Abstract:Surplus of liquidity has become one of the basic characteristic of Chinese macro economy.Aim at the extensive disputation in this region,this paper focuses on answering four questions:firstly,on the conception,we think that surplus of liquidity is the short-term eruption of long-run and sustaining heap of excess money supply;secondly,on the cause of formation,we think that surplus of liquidity is the outcome of synthetically effects from interior and exterior;thirdly,on the replying measures,we think surplus of liquidity's elimination relies on the balance of international payments,free foreign exchange system design,and macroeconomic management;fourthly,on the solving policies,we think that final settlement of Chinese surplus of liquidity must begin with conqueringforeign aggression,found on eliminating internal hardship,depend on coordination of different measures,choose social security,foreign exchange utilization,and capital market development as the main breach,advance efficiently and safely.

Abstract:Chinese banks have sought ways to rapidly expand lending in light of strict regulatory mandates to reduce official lending and maintain high capital adequacy ratios. Through arbitraging capital risk weights, total lending has expanded while capital adequacy ratios have remained unchanged. Off-balance sheet transactions using lower credit quality assets to collateralize repurchases remain a channel for banks to increase their balance sheet and reduce official lending. Many banks even classify repurchase lending underneath the heading of lending to banks. As back door lending funds roll-overs and commodity speculation, banks’ inherent liquidity risk exposure causes investors to significantly underestimate systematic risk. Huishang Bank’s expansion of arbitraged credit lines into high risk areas has forced the bank to increase Treasury assets 100 billion rmb in 18 months for a net profit increase of 16 million rmb or a marginal return on net assets of 0.015% — in essence — zero.

The upgrading industrial structure and the increasing opening degree lead to the excessive money demand and higher money demand elasticity. Bad credits weaken money supply effectiveness and lead to illusive increasing money. We set up the money market disequilibrium model under the condition of the excessive liquidity. The imbalance between money demand and money supply is the key of Chinese excessive liquidity problems.

Abstract:In recent years, investors have increasingly focused on the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance of businesses, driven by the rising importance of social and environmental challenges. This trend highlights the critical role of ESG factors in the financial sector. This study leverages stakeholder theory, risk management theory, and ESG investment theory, utilising financial data and ESG scores from Chinese listed banks to comprehensively analyse ESG elements and examine their impact on the liquidity risk of commercial banks. The results show that: (1) Enhanced ESG performance can mitigate liquidity risk in commercial banks by reducing the proportion of non-performing loans and improving overall financial performance. (2) By standardising and implementing sustainable business practices, ESG elements can improve commercial banks' liquidity management levels and lessen the incidence and effects of liquidity risk. As a result, it is critical to lower banks' liquidity risk and support the long-term growth of commercial banks from five angles: information disclosure, differentiated reform, digital transformation, education and training, and international cooperation.

The Effect of Stock Liquidity on Corporate Risk-Taking

Abstract:This study examines the effect of stock liquidity on corporate risk-taking behavior. We find that stock liquidity has a positive and significant effect on corporate risk-taking. We find consistent results when we use the split share structure reform (SSSR) in China as an exogenous shock to stock liquidity. We also investigate the channels through which stock liquidity affects risk-taking and find that increases in stock liquidity lower the cost of capital and increase the pay-for-performance sensitivity of managers. Finally, we conduct cross-sectional tests to rule out privatization as an alternative explanation for our results. Our study sheds light on the real effects of stock liquidity and contributes to the understanding of capital market development.
A Study for Threshold Effects of Foreign Bank Entry's Influence on the Efficiency of Domestic Commercial Bank:Evidence from Commercial Banks in China

Abstract:Based on the estimation of efficiency for 14 major commercial banks in China by using SFA method, this paper empirically examines the threshold effects of foreign bank entry's influence on domestic commercial banks' efficiency,and further analyzes the moderate level of foreign bank's entry.We find there are threshold effects of foreign bank entry's influence on domestic commercial banks' efficiency.However,this threshold effects show no significant differences between state-owned and non-state-owned banks.Furthermore,since China's joining in WTO,the general level of foreign banks entry stays in a moderate range,and foreign banks have played a positive role in improving operating efficiency of domestic commercial banks.
The Bank-lending Channel of Monetary Policy Transmission in China

Abstract:This paper comparatively examines the bank-lending channel of monetary policy transmission in China between Chinese and foreign banks. We consider 22 foreign banks and 67 domestic banks that account for about 82-88% of total bank assets in China. We focus on the period 2007-2013 during which foreign banks in China had dramatically increased, following the liberalization of the entry of foreign banks at the end of 2006. In our models, we allow for heterogeneity in banks’ characteristics such as size, capitalization, liquidity, credit risk and efficiency. Using a fixed effect model, we find that bank ownership plays a critical role in determining bank’s response to monetary policy. In specific, foreign banks are found to be less sensitive to China’s monetary policy than Chinese banks, but they are sensitive to the real interest rate of U.S. This finding points to the existence of internal capital markets in case of foreign banks. Foreign banks can use internal capital market to buffer the impact of monetary policy on loans. As a result, they could reduce their loans by less than Chinese banks in response to tight monetary policy. When the Chinese monetary authority conducts monetary policies, therefore, it should keep in mind that larger changes in monetary policy instruments are required to obtain the same desired change in aggregate demand in the presence of the buffering effects of foreign banks. We also find that the effects of price instruments and quantitative instruments of monetary policy on Chinese banks’ lending behavior are different. For example, Chinese banks’ lending is more sensitive to policy lending rate than to required reserve ratio.
Interest rate liberalization and bank liquidity creation: evidence from China

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to empirically analyze how interest rate liberalization affects bank liquidity creation, and investigate whether the relationship between them is linear. Design/methodology/approach Based on panel data on 145 banks in China over the period 1997–2015, this paper regresses the econometric model by conducting feasible generalized least square estimation. Findings The regression results show that, first, interest rate liberalization has a nonlinear impact on bank liquidity creation, and the relationship between them is inverted U-shaped. In other words, as interest rate liberalization progresses, bank liquidity creation increases first, and then decreases. Second, through the mediation effect tests, this study found that interest rate liberalization affects bank liquidity creation through bank risk-taking. That is, interest rate liberalization leads to changes in bank risk-taking, thus resulting in changes in bank liquidity creation. Research limitations/implications The effect of interest rate liberalization on bank liquidity creation is nonlinear, so promoting interest rate liberalization faces a trade-off because excessive bank liquidity creation may lead to asset price bubbles, while insufficient bank liquidity creation may inhibit economic growth. Practical implications Interest rate liberalization has a significant impact on bank liquidity creation; therefore, bank liquidity creation should be added to the objective function of the regulator that determines interest rate liberalization reform in China. Social implications Interest rate liberalization has a direct impact on bank risk-taking, so the consequences of interest rate liberalization should be included in the framework of macro-prudential supervision. Originality/value Interest rate liberalization is one of the most important financial reforms in China, yet its potential impact on firm-level bank liquidity is little explored. This paper attempts to fill the gap.
