Abstract:As a native grass species on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, Elymus sibiricus L. plays a pivotal role in helping the development of animal husbandry and green ecological construction on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau due to its excellent ecological value and high-efficiency feed value. Despite the excellent production performance of old mangosteen, there is a shortage of available seeds of fine varieties, and it still relies on a large number of imports. Spikes are the final embodiment of seed yield, while spike characteristics are closely related to yield. The role of spike characteristics in yield structure has been paid more and more attention. Using 51 E. sibiricus germplasm resources collected in Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in recent years and two main varieties, ‘Qingmu No. 1’ and ‘Tongde,’ as test materials, the differences and relationships between spike traits, spike type classification, and the seed yield per individual plant (SYP) were studied by analysis of variance (ANOVA), multiple comparison, correlation analysis, grey relation and path analysis in 2020 and 2021 growing seasons. The differences in 13 spike traits and SYP among materials were extremely significant, and correlation analysis showed that there was a certain degree of correlation between traits. Path analysis showed that 13 spike traits were divided into three levels according to their indirect effects on SYP. Grey correlation analysis revealed that breeders should focus on seed length/seed width (SdL/W), 1000-kernel weight, number of spikelets (SpN), dry weight per spike (DWS), and width of spikelets (SpW) to improve SYP. Using DWS as the classification index, the test materials could be divided into different spike types, namely thin (TST), medium (MST), and heavy (HST). According to grain density, the test materials could be divided into loose (LST), semi-dense (SDST), and dense (DST) spike types. According to spike mass index (SMI), the following spike types were identified: slender (SST), well-proportioned (WST), and large (LAST). The SYP of MST, DST, and LAST was significantly higher than that of TST, LST, and SST. Generally, MST, HST, SDST, DST, WST, and LAST had common characteristics, including abundant and dense grains per spike and heavier spikes, which can be used to identify candidates for high-yield seed varieties. Collectively, the classification results were verified across two experimental years and consistent with the field performance. These results provide vital information for germplasm screening and high-yield breeding to increase seed yield in E. sibiricus. To our knowledge, this is the first report of spike type classification in E. sibiricus.
