The increasing changes of tall stature youth in different areas of China

Abstract:Objective To analyze the increasing changes of tall stature youth in different areas of China in recent 15 years. Methods In total there were 410 556 Han youth came from National Survey on Students' Constitution in 1985 and 2000. Six areas were grouped by the provinces, and subjects were divided into various Martin height-stages. Results Increasing changes were obvious in all the areas, but the strongest among them was the north-costal area, then the north-inland and north-west, then the eastern and central-south, with the southwest being the weakest. In 2000, 76.7% of males and 71.1% of females in the urban north-costal area had their adult stature of Martin VI height-stage, and the peak of occurring time advanced to adolescence. In the provincial capital groups in this area, 5.8% of the male youth and 5.6% of the female youth aged 17~18 years had their tall stature higher than Martin VII stage. Conclusions The rapid increasing trend of tall youth was the necessary result of the secular growth changes in China in recent years.
