Abstract:Methane has gained significant attention due to its abundant reserves and notable greenhouse effect. Electrocatalytic conversion of methane is an efficient and green pathway proceeding under mild conditions. However, the low solubility of methane in aqueous electrolytes imposes mass transfer limitations, leading to low current densities in electrocatalytic reactions and hindering large-scale production. This paper discusses the recent progress in quite a few aspects of electrocatalytic conversion of methane. Firstly, the reaction mechanisms involved in methane electrocatalysis are summarized, including dehydrogenation and C–H bond cleavage mediated by the active species. Next, we discuss how to promote electrochemical methane conversion regarding both the reaction process and mass transfer from the perspective of chemical engineering. Considerable efforts have been done to enhance the reaction process, including developing efficient electrocatalysts and devices. Meanwhile, the enhancement of transport processes via, e.g. improving the solubility of methane and modification on the transport area and distance, also facilitates more efficient methane conversion. Finally, an outlook on future development challenges is provided.

Abstract:Recently, various efforts have been put forward on the development of technologies for the synthesis of methane from CO2 and H2, since it can offer a solution for renewable H2 storage and transportation. In parallel, this reaction is considered to be a critical step in reclaiming oxygen within a closed cycle. Over the years, extensive fundamental research works on CO2 methanation have been investigated and reported in the literatures. In this updated review, we present a comprehensive overview of recent publications during the last 3 years. Various aspects on this reaction system are described in detail, such as thermodynamic considerations, catalyst innovations, the influence of reaction conditions, overall catalytic performance, and reaction mechanism. Finally, the future development of CO2 methanation is discussed.

Abstract:Nonoxidative coupling of methane exhibits promising prospect in that it affords value-added hydrocarbons and hydrogen with high atom economy. However, challenge remains in direct, selective conversion of methane to more valuable hydrocarbons like olefins. The current work presents a catalyst with well-dispersed Ta atoms anchored by graphitic C3N4-supported phthalocyanine. Such a catalyst is able to convert methane selectively to ethylene and propylene at a relatively low temperature (350 °C). The conception of the active center and construction of the catalyst have been described, and the origins of the catalytic performance are discussed.

Abstract:A comprehensive review is carried out on some important ways about the activation and conversion of methane which include the reforming of methane with carbon dioxide, the oxidative coupling of methane and the homologation of methane. The recent progress in the catalysts study and the catalitic mechenism are analized. The factors affecting the reactivity of those catalysts are also illustrated. And a new way of methane conversion is probed.

Abstract:Syngas is a very important chemical raw material.Recently,carbon dioxide reforming of methane to syngas has become a hot research point.Its reaction mechanism is discussed in this paper,and emphasis placed on application of different ways for reforming of methane and carbon dioxide,including plasma jet,electric arc and their combination.Compared with cold plasma,thermal plasma is more suitable for industrial scale production and has better prospect.

Abstract:Four methods of producing synthesis gas by indirect conversion of methane are summarized including reforming of methane with H2O, catalyzing partial oxidation of methane, reforming of methane with CO2 and reforming of methane with CO2-O2. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are illustrated from production process and catalyst. The prospect of research on reforming of methane was outlined.

Abstract:In this paper,the research progress of synthesis gas preparation by catalytic conversion of methane in the presence of oxygen is summarized.The authors’ work in preparing syngas form methane in the presence of oxygen is introduced.Catalytic partial oxidation(CPO),autothermal CO2 reforming(ATR-CO2),autothermal H2O reforming(ATR-H2O) and triple-reforming of methane are reviewed.The achievements in catalyst,reaction mechanism and process conditions are also discussed.The research focus and commercial application of catalytic conversion of methane in the future are also prospected.

Abstract:Conversion of methane into value-added chemicals is of significance for methane utilization and industrial demand of primary chemical products. The barrier associated with the nonpolar structure of methane and the high bond energy C-H bond (4.57 eV) makes it difficult to realize methane conversion and activation under mild conditions. The photothermal synergetic strategy by combining photon energy and thermo energy provides an advanced philosophy to achieve efficient methane conversion. In this review, we overview the current pioneering studies of photothermal methane indirect conversion and present the methane direct conversion by the way of photocatalysis and thermocatalysis to provide a fundamental understanding of methane activation. Finally, we end this review with a discussion on the remaining challenges and perspectives of methane direct conversion over single-atom catalysts via photothermal synergetic strategy.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane to benzene or other valuable chemicals is a very promising process for the efficient application of natural gas. Compared with conversion processes that require oxidants, non-oxidative direct conversion is more attractive due to high selectivity to the target product. In this paper, an alternative route for methane dehydrogenation and selective conversion to benzene and hydrogen without the participation of oxygen is discussed. A brief review of the catalysts used in methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) is first given, followed by our current understanding of the location and the active phase of Mo species, the reaction mechanism, the mechanism of carbonaceous deposit and the deactivation of Mo/zeolite catalysts are systematically discussed. Ways to improve the catalytic activity and stability are described in detail based on catalyst and reaction as well as reactor design. Future prospects for methane dehydroaromatization process are also presented.

Abstract:Photocatalytic methane conversion is a promising route for converting abundant and affordable methane into value‐added products driven by clean sustainable light energy under mild conditions. In this paper, the research progress of photocatalytic methane conversion, including methane activation mechanism, methane conversion reaction, and photocatalytic reactor design is reviewed, and the challenges and development prospects for photocatalytic methane conversion are discussed. Methane as the main component in natural gas is a promising chemical raw material for synthesizing value‐added chemicals, but its harsh chemical conversion process often causes severe energy and environment concerns. Photocatalysis provides an attractive path to active and convert methane into various products under mild conditions with clean and sustainable solar energy, although many challenges remain at present. In this review, recent advances in photocatalytic methane conversion are systematically summarized. As the basis of methane conversion, the activation of methane is first elucidated from the structural basis and activation path of methane molecules. The study is committed to categorizing and elucidating the research progress and the laws of the intricate methane conversion reactions according to the target products, including photocatalytic methane partial oxidation, reforming, coupling, combustion, and functionalization. Advanced photocatalytic reactor designs are also designed to enrich the options and reliability of photocatalytic methane conversion performance evaluation. The challenges and prospects of photocatalytic methane conversion are also discussed, which in turn offers guidelines for methane‐conversion‐related photocatalyst exploration, reaction mechanism investigation, and advanced photoreactor design.

Abstract:Methane, a main component of natural gas, shale gas, and combustible ice, is widely distributed in nature. The direct conversion and efficient utilization of methane have become crucial topics within the scientific community. However, two main challenges persist in this field: methane activation and overoxidation inhibition. Recently, research on this subject has reached its pinnacle stage. Herein, we present some works addressing these concerns, particularly employing photocatalytic approaches, and with a specific focus on strategies aimed at enhancing the selectivity towards methanol as the desired product. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges and propose potential solutions for advancing direct methane‐to‐methanol conversion technology.

Abstract:As an important fossil energy, natural gas has played an important role as a fuel for power and heat generation. With the development of renewable energies under the pressure of the climate change and environmental conservation, there is an urge to turn the fossil fuel era to fossil chemicals era to meet the ever increasing demanding for carbon-containing materials. As the main component of the abundant natural gas resources, methane conversion to chemicals is one of the keys for this purpose. This chapter overviews the well-developed indirect conversion technologies via syngas intermediate stage and direct conversion technologies which are still under development, including the thermocatalytic conversion and emerging electrocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic conversion technologies. While significant progress has been made in both mechanistic understanding and catalyst optimization, there are still great challenges for industrial applications and innovations for more efficient catalysts are still highly needed.

Abstract:Abundant and affordable methane is not only a high-quality fossil fuel, it is also a raw material for the synthesis of value-added chemicals. Solar-energy-driven conversion of methane offers a promising approach to directly transform methane to valuable energy sources under mild conditions, but remains a great challenge at present. In this Review, recent advances in the photocatalytic conversion of methane are systematically summarized. Insights into the construction of effective semiconductor-based photocatalysts from the perspective of light-absorption units and active centers are highlighted and discussed in detail. The performance of various photocatalysts in the conversion of methane is presented, with the photooxidation classified according to the oxidant systems. Lastly, challenges and future perspectives in the photocatalytic oxidation of methane are described.

Abstract:The quest for an efficient process to convert methane efficiently to fuels and high value-added chemicals such as olefins and aromatics is motivated by their increasing demands and recently discovered large reserves and resources of methane. Direct conversion to these chemicals can be realized either oxidatively via oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) or nonoxidatively via methane dehydroaromatization (MDA), which have been under intensive investigation for decades. While industrial applications are still limited by their low yield (selectivity) and stability issues, innovations in new catalysts and concepts are needed. The newly emerging strategy using iron single sites to catalyze methane conversion to olefins, aromatics, and hydrogen (MTOAH) attracted much attention when it was reported. Because the challenge lies in controlled dehydrogenation of the highly stable CH4 and selective C-C coupling, we focus mainly on the fundamentals of C-H activation and analyze the reaction pathways toward selective routes of OCM, MDA, and MTOAH. With this, we intend to provide some insights into their reaction mechanisms and implications for future development of highly selective catalysts for direct conversion of methane to high value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Methane has a substantial and widespread reserve on Earth.As a very abundant carbon and hydrogen source, as well as an energy vector, upgrading methane to higher-value fuels and chemicals (carbon oxygenates, C 2+ hydrocarbons, et al.) is a promising technology in the supply of energy and chemicals by a low-carbon process.Due to the stable and inert nature of methane, activating and converting the molecule is extremely challenging.Currently, commercial methane conversion technology operates at high temperatures and/or high pressure, suffering from intense energy consumption and high capital investment.Photocatalysis, using photons as the only energy input, can operate at mild temperatures and under atmospheric pressure, which is a promising and green technology for methane conversion to highvalue products.In this review, fundamental understandings of photocatalytic methane activation and product yield involving different oxidants are discussed.Then recent advances in photocatalysts for methane conversion to hydrocarbons and oxygenates are detailed, including the relevant reaction mechanism and reaction pathways.Finally, the challenges and perspectives for photocatalytic methane conversion will be discussed based on the current progress and fundamental understanding.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane to value-added chemicals provides a promising alternative to industrial energy-intensive processes, but still faces many technological and economical challenges. Heterogeneous photocatalysis possesses great promise to drive direct methane conversion under mild conditions. In this review, we present the latest advances in direct photocatalytic conversion of methane to liquid oxygenates and higher hydrocarbons, with an emphasis on the strategies for the rational design of photocatalysts to improve the activity and selectivity of the desired products, and discuss the current challenges and our perspectives on opportunities for further development of photocatalytic systems that can enable highly selective and efficient conversion of methane to valuable chemicals.
