Abstract:Aiming to assist the design and management personnel of automotive products to make correct judgments and give optimization solutions for the design of exterior styling, and to solve the defects of the traditional method which relies too much on experience and personal ability, a neural network-based key feature analysis and optimization method of styling is proposed. Firstly, the user attributes are analyzed and quantified, and the weighted optimization of user evaluation data is completed based on the multidimensional Gaussian distribution function to construct a more objective car styling evaluation dataset. Secondly, a particle swarm algorithm is proposed to optimize the prediction model of radial basis function neural network (PSO-RBFNN) which deeply analyzes the mapping relationship between different car perspectives and users' perceptual preferences. The identification of styling components is completed with the annotation of feature points, and a parametric expression method of styling feature data with multi-viewpoint weight optimization is proposed. Third, the model interpretation is based on the embedded feature selection method to discover the key feature points affecting user perception, and the key common features of styling are obtained through the coupling relationship analysis of feature points. Finally, the optimal distribution range of key features is given based on statistical analysis, and the application process is shown by an example of optimization to verify the feasibility of the theory. Compared with the traditional methods, PSO-RBFNN has better prediction accuracy. Meanwhile, the modeling optimization method based on key features has the great advantages of objective accuracy and high efficiency compared with the traditional theory.

A Research on Thinking Mechanism in Fuzzy Front End of Car Styling

Abstract:In order to enhance the effectiveness of fuzzy front end phase of styling in vehicle product devel-opment, the thinking mechanism of designers in that phase is studied in this paper. Firstly, the concept and conno-tation of the fuzzy front end of car styling are expounded, and a formalized description on thinking process is conduc-ted by dividing it into three stages:divergence, transformation and convergence, and the types of thinking activities are defined. Then an experiment of verbal report is performed around a specific design task of"battery electric vehi-cles dedicated for urban young group born in 80s", with two coding schemes based on thinking process and thinking activities are proposed respectively. Finally the experiment data of experienced designers and novice designers are comparatively analyzed, their differnces are summed up with some conclusions drawn, providing theoretical supports for the practice and education of car styling.

Abstract:The paper first summarized the methods of product style design. Based on the summary, a style recognition and design technique based on style module is presented. In this technique, the constraints between im-style feature lines and style feature lines are defined. A method of the imprecise concept creating technology based on product style feature lines and constraints is also developed. As a prototype, the computer-aided conceptual design system based on product style module recognition model is implemented, which offer the decision making tools to designers and customers. The proposed prototype usescar design for instance to verify the practicability and correctness of the methods in this paper.
Research on Parametric Generation of Automobile Styling Based on Grasshopper

Abstract:Automakers are launching new energy sub-brands for market distinction and premium positioning, facing design uniformity issues. Although underutilized in the industry, parametric design's potential for form innovation suggests a transformative impact on car design. This research is based on the theory of abstract forms in automotive styling, analyzing the shape rules and application methods of abstract forms. A form generation model based on random lines has been established in Grasshopper, and the application process of this parametric generation technology has been fully constructed in conjunction with actual design cases. The model produces a variety of stochastic forms, which are selected and optimized according to the characteristics of the vehicle type and aesthetic principles to obtain an abstract prototype. This abstract prototype is gradually evolved into a core abstract form, a sub-vehicle form, and a vehicle form through Rhino software, and a NURBS model is constructed based on the vehicle form. This paper innovatively constructs a car styling design method based on parametric generation, namely ‘Parametric Design - Stochastic Form - Abstract Prototype - Core Abstract Form - Sub-vehicle Form - Vehicle Form - Production Car Style’, and applies it to specific design cases, verifying the feasibility of this technical route.

Abstract:In order to remedy the weakness of traditional subjective evaluation method and acquire the users' objective assessment on automotive form design, a method of Auto form evaluation based on eye tracking is proposed. First, the index system is structured on the basis of heatmap including striping the background, extracting color characters by HSV model and calculating the statistic of grey level histogram. Second, the evaluation on auto form is defined as binary classification, and the function model is built by Fisher discriminate. The reliability and practicality of this method was validated by taking a case. The result showed that overall accuracy of this method was high. So a feasible technical approach for the rapid evaluation of automotive styling is provided.

Abstract:Research and/or Engineering Questions/Objective To purchase automobiles, consumers will not only consider functional demands, but also take into account the aesthetic function and symbolic value. In addition, beautiful and harmonious colour and texture can not only raise a vehicle level, but also allow enterprises to create greater profits with low cost, as well as promote brand image and competitive edge. More importantly, with aesthetic demands satisfied, consumers shall feel humane automobile and cheerfulness in body and mind. Thus, objective of this research is to create glamorous colour and texture design of Chinese automobile. Methodology Based on automobile brands of each country on the market, especially Japanese, German and America vehicles, research method of summary and comparison is applied to analyze similarity and diversity between automobile color and texture design of China and other countries from the view of overall color matching, texture matching and color psychology. Results Through analysis of the current shortcomings in colour and texture design of Chinese automobiles, with the method of learning and absorption, it is summarized that colour and texture design of Chinese automobile shall mix elements of Chinese traditional culture and design principles of colour and texture design of Chinese automobile. Therefore, the research not only lays foundation for specific achievement of Chinese automobile design in colour and texture, but also serves as a reference for foreign automobiles to enter Chinese market. Limitations of this study Limitations of the present research is that no experience is gained of localized conditions and folk cultures in these foreign countries where the brands belong to, so no research is conducted on how the glamorous colour and texture design of these brands is realized with integration of objective and subjective factors. What does the paper offer that is new in the field in comparison to other works of the author: The design principle of automobile colour and texture is initially presented in this paper, and the analysis of development direction for colour and texture design of Chinese automobile is innovative. Conclusion The design principle of automobile color and texture summarized serves as an important guideline to vehicle styling design. And ‘people’ is the center of automobile color and texture design all along, because harmonious and beautiful color and texture design is significant to consumers, automobile styling, and automobile enterprises, which serves as a symbol of automobile brand images, national culture and times.

Abstract:To evaluate the fuzzy and uncertain factors brought by human's emotional sensibilities during the design of new energy vehicle models, a scientific design evaluation method was adopted. This study combines the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Kansei Engineering to assess the design of new energy vehicle models. It uses both objective criteria and subjective user perceptions. First, it quantified the design imagery vocabulary through Kansei Engineering and identified the target imagery vocabulary. Secondly, the AHP method was used to establish a relationship between design features and imagery vocabulary. Thrid, the study created an evaluation index system for design imagery, and adopted the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation matrix to rank the representative vehicles and brands in the Chinese new energy vehicle market. Based on the weight analysis results, the vehicle functionality (whether it is safe and reliable), the elegance of design, and the intricacy of vehicle structure were identified as the top three aspects that affect the impression of new energy vehicles. Therefore, we need to focus on these aspects during the design of new energy vehicles. Additionally, by integrating objective evaluation and emotional analysis results, we assessed the design for each new energy vehicle brand. The results of this study are important for developing the new energy vehicle market.

Abstract:By analyzing the styling characteristic of head and leg impact areas,the styling control strategy is proposed with regard to engine hood,ventilation cover plate,engine hood leading edge,front bumper,fender and radiator grille.The front bumper support area concept is presented accordingly.Furthermore,the optimal position relationship of front bumper styling support area is obtained using the MADYMO under a given stiffness of bumper front-end components.The result indicates that the optimized front-end styling can control the injury value effectively and helps to improve performance of pedestrian protection.

Abstract:In the era of perceptual consumption, car styling design is an important factor that affects the customer's purchase decision, which leads to competition among different car enterprises. Car headlight that is the most important component in the car body needs to be investigated. In this study, Kansei engineering and its related mathematical method that are widely used to translate customer's feelings or perceptions to design features or elements are applied to the car headlight form design research. Firstly, perceptual words of car headlights and representative headlight samples are selected. Secondly, perceptual image space is built based on the semantic differential method. Then, the prominent perceptual words are obtained based on the principle component analysis and all samples on prominent perceptual words are ranked. The result shows that the sample shape design with a metaphor of "angry face" has higher perceptual scores that will leave a deep impression on customers and have more attractiveness. The proposed design strategies can be taken as a design reference to car designers or car companies.
Quantification of Perceived Environmental Friendliness for Vehicle Silhouette Design

Abstract:Quantification of subjective attributes expressed as functions of design variables is a significant challenge in creating product design optimization models. For example, the objective assessment of a vehicle’s environmental friendliness is typically based on fuel economy and emissions. But some design variables such as a vehicle’s silhouette (two-dimensional body shape) may create a subjective perception of environmental friendliness, which may impact consumer preference along with objective metrics. In this paper, we show a method for assessing subjective attributes in the context of design attributes. We focus on perceived environmental friendliness (PEF) and we develop a model of PEF as a function of vehicle silhouette shape variables. The modeling process consists of stimuli development using design of experiments, survey design including direct assessment of the key subjective attribute PEF, elicitation of consumer preference, measurement of purported subjective mechanisms (for the PEF case, whether the design is “inspired by nature”), measurement of respondent characteristics (for the PEF case, environmental attitudes and demographics), statistical analysis of data, and validation. Results for the PEF example indicate that silhouettes perceived as environmentally friendly are the most preferred. Design variables that correlated with PEF were identified and used to generate new designs, which were validated in a follow-up study. Implications of using the general methodology in engineering design are discussed.

Abstract:The interaction between autonomous vehicles (AVs) and pedestrians has gained significant attention, leading to the exploration of external human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) equipped on AVs to facilitate effective communication. While existing research suggests that perceptions of vehicle appearances may influence interactions between pedestrians and AVs, a comprehensive study on the eHMIs related to AV appearance remains lacking. Therefore, we conducted a virtual reality (VR) experiment to investigate how AV appearances affect pedestrians' acceptance regarding Awareness, Intent, and Harmony during interactions with various eHMIs. Leveraging the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) method, we identified specific combinations of AV appearances and eHMIs that yield either high or low-performance interactions. For example, our findings reveal that text displays exhibit high performance in terms of awareness on AVs that are aggressive and ordinary. Furthermore, we distilled design guidelines to provide actionable suggestions for the design of eHMIs, fostering the acceptance of AVs among pedestrians.

Abstract:Product image conveys customers' emotional needs. It is the first time to use the method of multi-experiment to create the model of product image cognition model based on feature-matching, such as experts visit, eye track observing experiments of influencing the car's appearance features, the features extraction experiments influencing product image cognition, the quantitative relation experiments between key formal features and product image cognition. This research creatively takes the fuzzy relations as the most basic starting point, instead of membership functions. It adopts multi-matrix to describe the fuzzy relations qualitatively and quantificationally, and adopts random sets theory especially nested random sets to establish uncertain inference method. It has established the product image cognition model based on nested random sets. The method of product image feature lines creating technology based on possibility distribution and the method of the imprecise concept creating technology base on constraints are put forward. Furthermore, the computer-aided automobile sketch design system based on image cognition model is implemented. Through this system, customers can input the image words to get the related conceptual design sketches. Designers can make a sketch of simple formal features in the computers and the system can automatically bring forward the image corresponding to the sketch.

Abstract:Evaluation method of automotive Class-A surfaces based on ICEM surf software is presented in the paper,in which a vehicle model is taken as example to analyze factors which affect overall styling,including conformity of styling characteristic and smoothness of the characteristic curve etc.,as well as some critical factors affecting curved surface quality including arrangement of reference points,geometric continuity,highlights,curvature comb,etc.Simultaneously,further in-depth analysis is made over inherent causes and outward manifestation of various major factors affecting Class A surfaces quality.The evaluation method plays a good role to control Class-A surface quality of automobile.

Abstract:Cowl Point is the key point in automotive styling design. In order to solve the styling design and engineering design conflict disadvantages, a series of engineering problems caused by styling design of Cowl Point are analyzed with regard to a newly-developed car, and the existing problems are summarized. These engineering problem is transformed into quantitative information which styling design engineers are easy to know. The cause of the existing problem is summed up, and the engineering constraints to be provided to a styling engineer at the early stage of styling design are also summarized. Make styling design and engineering design achieve the unity on the macroscopic, complete styling creative design in engineering framework.
A Study of Personalized Shift Strategy Based on Styled Driver Modeling

Abstract:Shift schedule is an important parameter for automatic transmission vehicle calibrations, which directly affects the vehicle's power and fuel economy. This paper tries to establish a system to optimize shift performance based on the styled driver model. First researchers proposed to imitate the real-world drivers' characters based on a locally designed neural network, which divides the driving style into three catagories, aggressive, moderate and mild. Second, the personalized driver models were tested for simulation under the standard speed profile, e.g. FTP-75. Third, the times series of shift and fuel consumption were analyzed under different driving styles. Finally, the shift map for different driving styles are corrected and the test results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. The corrected shift schedule can effectively reduce fuel consumption and improve shifting comfort, which is useful for Eco-driving.
A Preliminary Consumer Preference Study On Suv Shape Design With Persona Method

Abstract:Chinese sport utility vehicle (SUV) market has experienced a boom in sales in recent years. While, there is limited research on consumer preferences and purchase demands for SUV. This paper integrated the persona method into consumer preference study on SUV shape design. Stage 1, influential design features of an SUV were extracted through a hierarchical grouping experiment. Based on the design features, 32 SUV samples were illustrated through an orthogonal plan. Stage 2, 400 Chinese SUV drivers conducted a preference test on 32 design samples, also their characteristics and traits were recorded. Based on the preference scores, 400 drivers were clustered into 5 groups by using clustering analysis. Then, through conjoint analysis, preference scores of each group were translated into concrete design proposals. Finally, 5 personas, each with specific traits and design solutions were built. The results can be employed directly by designers to optimize design strategy for SUV products. Also, the method and process could provide design guide for designers to extend to other product categories.
Consistency Study Between Female Preferences for SUV Shape Design and Designer Comprehension of These Preferences for the Chinese Market

Abstract:Proportion of female consumers in Chinese Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) market is rapidly growing, and appearance is the most important factor that affects their purchasing decision. However, little study about their preferences has been conducted. If traits and demands of target female consumers were not clearly understood, inconsistencies and deviation between consumer preferences and proposed designs for them might exist. In this study, traits, demands and preferences for SUV shape designof630 Chinese female were studied, then they were clustered into five typical groups. Then, 10 professional designers were invited to match SUVs for five groups, after that, a correlation analysis was conducted between the preferred SUVs of the five groups and the matched SUVs for them. Analysis results of two groups were negative correlations, which proved the real existence of misunderstanding of designers about traits and demands of female consumers. Finally, for a reference, feasible design solutions were provided for these two groups through a conjoint analysis based on their preference scores. The methods and final results could be incorporated into the SUV design process and provide references for the automobile industry.

Abstract:The quest for improved fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness is transforming automotive vehicle design. In addition to new energy sources and management, new powertrain technologies offer increased flexibility in the spatial arrangement (packaging) and exterior shape (styling) of a vehicle. Design choices in packaging and styling are closely linked to consumer preferences, particularly those that influence consumers’ decisions about the objective qualities of a product (i.e., perceptual attributes). The ability to include perceptual attributes into a design optimization study is a valuable extension of the more traditional engineering approach that looks at only functional attributes. Previous work has studied the quantification of perceived environmental friendliness (PEF) in vehicle silhouette design. In this paper, empirically validated PEF silhouette attributes are included as constraints in a vehicle optimization model that maximizes fuel economy. Results indicate that there is a tradeoff between PEF preferences and the attainable fuel economy for a given vehicle, where increasing vehicle length leads to increasing PEF and decreasing fuel economy.

Balancing design freedom and brand recognition in the evolution of automotive brand styling

Abstract:Designers faced with the task of developing a new product model of a brand must balance several considerations. The design must be novel and express attributes important to the customers, while also recognizable as a representative of the brand. This balancing is left to the intuition of the designers, who must anticipate how customers will perceive the new design. Oftentimes, the design freedom used to meet a product attribute can compromise the recognition of the product as a member of the brand. In this paper, an experiment is conducted for measuring changes in ten styling attributes common to both design freedom and brand recognition for automotive designs from four brands, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, and Lexus, using customer responses to two- and three-dimensional vehicle designs created and presented interactively through a crowdsourced web application. Results show that while brand recognition is highly dependent on the manufacturer, two brands have strong negative relationship between design freedom and brand recognition, suggesting that these two manufacturers face a significant challenge when evolving their respective brand styling. This study is a first effort toward quantifying and predicting tradeoffs between design freedom and brand recognition, contributing to existing efforts that augment human intuition during strategic design decisions.

Abstract:This paper aims to provide a more convenient interaction approach for users who can manipulate or build his pleasurable car model by adjusting semantic properties. Since specific aesthetic property is determined by semantic key lines, adjusting these lines obeying particular curve styling property will manipulate car model semantically. An interface is designed to change styling properties with modification value, rather than geometrical operating on control points directly. Furthermore, styling properties are integrated together to reshape the model semantically. This method reshapes the parametric car model using morph able models in design language automatically. Users can realize different semantic modification with some options in the interface for creative design.
