Abstract:Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have recently been considered as a viable candidate for forward error correction in system level hardware-redundant, fault-tolerant logics. An important factor that influences the choosing of a specific FEC technique in a nano-scale system implementation is its real-time performance, namely its computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a set of rules to decide whether a variable node in a LDPC decoder should update its value in subsequent iterations of the decoding process, or be considered as converged. We show that by carefully choosing the convergence rules for variable nodes, significant reduction of decoding complexity can be achieved with endurable performance loss.
A class of QC-LDPC codes with low error floor and linear encoding complexity

Abstract:A class of QC-LDPC codes with low error floor and low complexity is proposed in this paper.First,a global matrix M with extern approximate lower triangular(eALT) method is designed,each ‘1’ in the global matrix M is replaced by a permutation matrix;each ‘0’ is replaced by a null matrix to reduce the number of small stopping set and error floor.Then,the relationship between the length of short cyclic in the parity matrix H and the cyclic shift coefficient is given.Based on the relationship,proper cyclic shift coefficient of each permutation matrix is selected.In order to lower the complexity of searching cyclic shift coefficient,a arithmetic progression sequence method is put forward,which use a given formula to generate coefficient and does not need search by computer.At last,the linear encoding process is given with the proposed QC-LDPC.Simulation shows that the proposed method can reduce the number of small stopping set,increase the minimum distance of LDPC codes,and achieve very low error floor with linear encoding complexity.What`s more,the cyclic coefficient was generate by structured method.

Abstract:In order to resolve the problems of large area,complicated routing and high power in decoding low-density parity-check codes(LDPC),this work presented a LDPC decoding approach,which is specified with parity check matrices based on circulant matrices,with structured memory and a corresponding partial parallel decoding architecture.By studying the structured parity matrix,the characteristic of the message passing between bit nodes and check nodes was indicated,and then a predetermined scheme of message storing with high flexibility and efficiency was proposed.Based on this scheme,a partial parallel decoding architecture was provided which significantly reduced the power and critical paths.Simulation of the LDPC in Chinese digital terrestrial television broadcasting standard on FPGA platform showed that the proposed decoding approach over AWGN channel achieved good performance,and suffered negligible performance loss compared with the double precision while effectively reducing the operation complexity.
A new method of detecting cycles in Tanner graph of LDPC codes

Abstract:To improve the performance of LDPC codes, we should detect and eliminate cycles in Tanner graph of the parity-check matrix when we make LDPC codes. We improved a logic algebraic algorithm in computing entire routes between the nodes of a communication network, and found a new method of detecting cycles in Tanner graph of LDPC codes. This method applied the logic algebraic calculation rules. First transformed the parity-check matrix and then constructed the relative matrix of the Tanner graph. Through integrating and deleting rows of relative matrix and correcting some elements, this new algorithm can detect all the cycles in a Tanner graph of LDPC codes which code length is n and information bits number is k, just needing integrating and deleting n-1 times and correcting k times. The calculation steps of the algorithm is shown detailed by an (8, 4, 2) LDPC example and its correctness have been validated.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the finite-length analysis of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes when used over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. We present the iterative decoding algorithm of LDPC codes, and we also discuss the encoding methods and the bipartite graph representation of LDPC codes ensemble. Finite-length LDPC code performances are investigated, and the influence of cycle is pointed out. Simulation results show that irregular LDPC codes with variable and check node degree distribution optimized for infinite-length codes are not optimal for finite-length LDPC codes, and the error patterns of both regular and irregular codes are investigated as an effort to improve the performance and design methodology of finite-length LDPC codes.

Abstract:In this paper,a logic algebraic algorithm in computing entire routes among the nodes of a communication network is improved,and a new algorithm of detecting cycles in bipartite graphs of LDPC codes is proposed.The algorithm obeys the logic algebraic calculation rules.Through integrating and deleting rows of relative matrix and correcting some elements of the matrix,the new algorithm can detect all the cycles in the bipartite graphs of LDPC codes.When the code length is n and information bits number is k,the integrating and deleting algorithm needs(n-1)×k times and the correcting algorithm needs k times.The validity and rationality of the algorithm are demonstrated in detail.The calculation course of the algorithm is shown by an example and the correctness is validated.

Abstract:The Tanner graph of long LDPC codes usually has no loops and LLR BP algorithm is the best soft-decision decoding algorithm. But the Tanner graph of short LDPC codes usually has loops, so infor-mation within variable nodes doesn't satisfy the condition of independent identical distribution and the de-coding performance of LLR BP algorithm will decrease. In this paper, a modified LLR BP algorithm is pro-posed, which can reduce the relativity of information within variable nodes by adjusting the iterative process of variable nodes information. Simulation results show that the LDPC decoding performance of the modified LLR BP algorithm is more effective than that of LLR BP algorithm, Normalized BP algorithm and offset BP algorithm.

Abstract:To reduce the cycles in the Tanner graph which may affect the code performance,a recursive method to construct low-density parity-check(LDPC) codes was proposed.The method used a parity-check matrix of a short LDPC code as its mother matrix upon which a long code was constructed with circulant permutation matrices.By choosing the circulant permutation matrix parameters properly,the number of cycles having a given length in the Tanner graph of the constructed long codes were equal to or less than that of the short code.Either regular or irregular LDPC codes were constructed.Simulation results show that the LDPC codes constructed by this method have very low error-floor and almost no performance degradation due to their special structure as compared with random LDPC codes.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an algebraic approach to design extremely low rate low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes by employing the primitive polynomials. We first investigate the requirements for the polynomials to construct 4-cycle free LDPC codes and then propose an algebraic approach to design the parity check matrix. To achieve a better decoding performance in the extremely low rate region, we propose an extension method to construct more check nodes and virtual variable nodes to obtain more constraints. Our designed LDPC codes have simple encoding and simple decoding features. Simulation results show that our proposed rate-0.03 LDPC code can achieve 2.2 dB gain, compared to the LDPC code designed by the progressive edge growth algorithm with the optimized edge degree distributions described in [7].

Abstract:This survey paper provides fundamentals in the design of LDPC codes. To provide a target for the code designer, we first summarize the EXIT chart technique for determining(near-)optimal degree distributions for LDPC code ensembles. We also demonstrate the simplicity of representing codes by protographs and how this naturally leads to quasi-cyclic LDPC codes. The EXIT chart technique is then extended to the special case of protograph-based LDPC codes. Next, we present several design approaches for LDPC codes which incorporate one or more accumulators, including quasi-cyclic accumulatorbased codes. The second half the paper then surveys severalalgebraic LDPC code design techniques. First, codes based on finite geometries are discussed and then codes whose designs are based on Reed-Solomon codes are covered. The algebraic designs lead to cyclic, quasi-cyclic, and structured codes. The masking technique for converting regular quasi-cyclic LDPC codes to irregular codes is also presented. Some of these results and codes have not been presented elsewhere. The paper focuses on the binary-input AWGN channel (BI-AWGNC). However, as discussed in the paper, good BI-AWGNC codes tend to be universally good across many channels. Alternatively, the reader may treat this paper as a starting point for extensions to more advanced channels. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of open problems.

Finite-Length Analysis for Spatially Coupled LDPC Codes Based on Base Matrix

Abstract:Spatially coupled low density parity check (SC-LDPC) are prominent candidates for future communication standards due to their "threshold saturation" properties. To evaluate the finite-length performance of SC-LDPC codes, a general and efficient finite-length analysis from the perspective of the base matrix is proposed. We analyze the evolution of the residual graphs resulting at each iteration during the decoding process based on the base matrix and then derive the expression for the error probability. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed finite-length analysis, we consider the SC-LDPC code ensembles constructed by parallelly connecting multiple chains (PC-MSC-LDPC). The analysis results show that the predicted error probabilities obtained by using the derived expression for the error probability match the simulated error probabilities. The proposed finite-length analysis provides a useful engineering tool for practical SC-LDPC code design and for analyzing the effects of the code parameters on the performances.

Abstract:This paper presents a algebraic method for constructing LDPC codes. It uses a parity-check matrix of a short LDPC code with given degree distribution as mother matrix, upon which a long LDPC code is constructed by circulant permutation matrices. The number of cycles of given length in the Tanner graph of constructed codes is equal to or less than that of the short codes. Simulation results show that the error floor of constructed LDPC codes can be suppressed to a very low level.

Abstract:Based on the property that high degree variable nodes within an irregular Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) code have more powerful error-correcting capability than that of low degree variable nodes, a group of irregular LDPC codes with Unequal Error Protection (UEP) property is designed in this letter. Simulation results show that the transmission quality of the image may be effectively improved with this class of irregular LDPC code.

Abstract:Two main decoding algorithms are usually used for low-density parity-check convolutional (LDPC-C) codes, belief propagation algorithm and on-demand variable node activation algorithm. However like the decoding for block codes, the iterations of these algorithms cannot utilize the messages of newly joined variable nodes within the next iteration windows continuously, limiting the decoding performance. Thus a serial decoding algorithm with continuous backtracking for LDPC-C codes is proposed. Based on the iteration windows, the proposed algorithm performs advance iteration with two adjacent iteration windows and then backtracks to the preceding iteration window. During each iteration the latest updated and newly joined messages are utilized. The whole iteration uses the backtracking continuously until all the results output. Different LDPC-C codes are used to test the performance of proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other algorithms and requires less number of iterations, improving the decoding convergence rate.

Abstract:The problem of improving the performance of linear programming（LP） decoding of low-density parity-check（LDPC） codes is considered in this paper.A multistep linear programming（MLP） algorithm was developed for decoding LDPC codes that includes a slight increase in computational complexity.The MLP decoder adaptively adds new constraints which are compatible with a selected check node to refine the results when an error is reported by the original LP decoder.The MLP decoder result is shown to have the maximum-likelihood（ML） certificate property.Simulations with moderate block length LDPC codes suggest that the MLP decoder gives better performance than both the original LP decoder and the conventional sum-product（SP） decoder.
On the Performance of Low-complexity Decoders of LDPC and Polar Codes

Abstract:Efficient decoding is crucial to high-throughput and low-power wireless communication scenarios. A theoretical analysis of the performance-complexity tradeoff toward low-complexity decoding is required for a better understanding of the fundamental limits in the above-mentioned scenarios. This study aims to explore the performance of decoders with complexity constraints. Specifically, we investigate the performance of LDPC codes with different numbers of belief-propagation iterations and the performance of polar codes with an SSC decoder. We found that the asymptotic error rates of both polar codes and LDPC codes are functions of complexity $T$ and code length $N$, in the form of $2^{-a2^{b\frac{T}{N}}}$, where $a$ and $b$ are constants that depend on channel and coding schemes. Our analysis reveals the different performance-complexity tradeoffs for LDPC and polar codes. The results indicate that if one aims to further enhance the decoding efficiency for LDPC codes, the key lies in how to efficiently pass messages on the factor graph. In terms of decoding efficiency, polar codes asymptotically outperform $(J, K)$-regular LDPC codes with a code rate $R \le 1-\frac{J(J-1)}{2^J+(J-1)}$ in the low-complexity regime $(T \le O(NlogN))$.

Abstract:Classical LLR BP algorithm to decode LDPC involves high complexitybecause of iterations and calculation complexity of horizontal directions in every iteration process. This paper proposes a new modified LLR BP algorithm to monitor whether decoding output is stable or not to decrease iteration times in low signal noise rate.At the same time,Taylor function approximation is adopted to reduce calculation complexity at check codes. Simulations reveal that this proposed method can reduce decode complexity widely for LDPC in the condition of a small decoding performance loss.

Abstract:Focused on the problem that short cycles degrade the iterative decoding performance of finite length LDPC, a class of improved low density parity check (LDPC) codes constructed based on Gallager's form is designed. On the basis of keeping down the basic form of Gallager's construction, a quasi-cyclic form is used, then the new codes are free of cycles of length 4 and have good minimum distance. Simulation results demonstrated that the improved codes are better than Gallager's codes when block length is small

Abstract:The low-density parity check codes (LDPC codes) are block codes whose performances are close to the Shannon limit. LDPC codes have the strong ability for error correction. The decoding algorithm of LDPC codes has a great influence on their performances. The belief propagation (BP) algorithm is a commonly used soft decision decoding algorithm. The algorithm decodes by information iterations, and its complexity does not increase rapidly with the increase of code length. This paper mainly analyze the probabilistic domain BP decoding algorithm, log-domain BP decoding algorithm and minimum sum decoding algorithm, the bit error performance of LDPC codes under BP algorithm is studied, and the influence of the number of iterations on the BP decoding algorithm is also shown by simulation results.
