Surveillance on the quality of sanitary disinfection in nursing homes for the elderly in Pudong New Area of Shanghai,2011-2015

Abstract:Objective To investigate the quality of sanitary disinfection in nursing homes for the elderly in Pudong New Area of Shanghai so as to provide evidence for prevention and control of infectious diseases in nursing homes for the elderly. Methods Ninety nursing homes for the elderly in Pudong New Area of Shanghai were selected to serve as the surveillance sites during 2011-2015. We detected aerobic bacterial count and coliform in the samples collected from indoor air, surface of environmental objects, eating utensils, clinical thermometers/spatulas, hands of staff and disinfection solution in use, and then evaluated the quality of sanitary disinfection in the nursing homes for the elderly. Results The annual eligible rates of disinfection quality in the 90 nursing homes for the elderly in Pudong New Area of Shanghai during 2011-2015 ranged from 75.00％ to 90.82％. The eligible rate of the surveyed samples in 2015 reached the highest, and statistically significant differences were found in the eligible rates of the surveyed samples in different years (χ2 =35.556, P=0.0001). The eligible rates of the samples collected from indoor air, surface of environmental objects, eating utensils, clinical thermometers/spatulas, hands of staff and disinfection solution in use in the nursing homes for the elderly ranged between 68.30％ and 98.89％, and statistically significant differences were observed in the eligible rates of disinfection among different samples (χ2 =116.879, P=0.0001). The eligible rate of sanitary disinfection was higher in public institutions than in private ones, with a statistically significant difference (χ2 =5.832, P=0.016). Conclusions The quality of sanitary disinfection in the nursing homes for the elderly in Pudong New Area of Shanghai during 2011-2015 was not very good. It is necessary to improve the quality of sanitary disinfection in the nursing homes for the elderly, and special attention should be paid to the weak link like sanitary disinfection of hands of staff, eating utensils and surface of environmental objects.
