Abstract:Pinus koraiensis (Sieb.et Zucc) is an economically and ecologically important tree species, naturally distributed in northeastern China. Conservation efforts and genetic improvement for this species began in the 1960s and 1980s, with the establishment of several primary seed orchards based on range-wide provenance evaluations. The original breeding objective was to improve growth and wood yield, but during the recent decade, it was redefined to include other traits, such as an enhancement of wood properties, seed oil content, cone yield, and the development of elite provenance with families, clones, and varieties with good tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, improvement processes are slow due to a long breeding cycle, and the number of improved varieties is still low. In this review, we summarize the recent progress in the selective improvement of P. koraiensis varieties, such as elite provenance, family, and clones, using various breeding procedures. We collate information on advances in the improvement of P. koraiensis, based on conventional breeding and molecular marker-assisted breeding methods; identify gaps in our understanding of the tree improvement processes; and propose future research directions, which will provide new insight for subsequent genetic breeding research on P. koraiensis.

Abstract:In China, forest coverage rate is far below the world average, and yearly increase in the lack of wood. Forestry is facing multiple pressures, such as economic development, social and ecological civilization construc-tion, and national security timber. The only way to re-solve this contradiction is the development of efficient artificial forest to significantly increase forest cover and forest production. Trees have a long period to become useful lumber, large genetic load, high heterozygosity and difficult to cultivate directed by a conventional method, therefore the genetic basis of silviculture need to be increased. For the past few years in our country, research results made by modern biotechnology, which is represented by the modern advanced molecular breed-ing methods particularly functional genomics and orien-tation cultivation by molecular design as the representa-tive, has an important influence in the world. Further increase investment and joint research, is expected to promote the development of forestry science and the rise of modern forestry industry.

Abstract:Over a decade,the Chinese government has attached great importance to the conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture(PGRFA).According to 20 priority fields described in the Global Plan of Action for the Conservation and Sustainable Utilization of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture(GPA),the Chinese government has formulated and perfected a series of regulations and laws,meanwhile,the management for plant genetic resources has strengthened.Through training and popularization of scientific knowledge related to genetic resources,the public awareness has been promoted.By the international cooperation and establishment of collaborative networks,it has promoted the exchanges of information,prefessionals and materials.Through the implementation of various national programmes and projects,the conservation system for plant genetic resources has been established and improved gradually to achieve the objectives of safe conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources,which has played a great role in plant breeding and food security in both China and the world.(1)A systematic survey and cataloguing for main grain crops and wild species of crops has been undertaken.Totally 116 in situ conservation sites,including wild rice,wild soybean,wild relatives of wheat and wild vegetables etc.has been established.In addition,other 30 in situ conservation sites have been put in plan for construction.Rapid extinction of wild plant genetic resources has been controlled effectively.(2)China has established a long-term national genebank,one national duplication genebank,ten medium-term national gene banks,29 medium-term provincial genebanks and 32 national gemplasm nurseries(including two in vitro seedling banks).In addition,other seven germplasm nurseries are in building.Thus,a sound system for conservation of national plant genetic resources has been basically formed.Totally 3970673 accessions of plant genetic resources has been preserved in the long-term genebank and the germplasm nurseries.(3)A total of 286604 accessions of plant genetic resources were multiplied and regenerated in the past ten years,which has enriched the medium-term genebanks and significantly increased the distribution ability of plant genetic resources to breeders and researchers.Only in 2001-2007,132000 accessions of germplasm resources were provided to 2650 institutions in China.(4)With the investment of 180 million RMB from the State,the National Key Facility of Crop Gene Resources And Genetic Improvement was established in 2003,which provides a excellent platform for genotyping and gene discovery of plant genetic resources.(5)Through in-depth characterization and evaluation of plant genetic resources,a great number of elite germplasm have been screened out and used in the development of new plant varieties widely used in production,leading to the effective increase of the utilization efficiency of plant genetic resources.Meanwhile,through intercropping and rotation between different kinds of crops and mix-cropping of different varieties,the diversity of varieties has been conserved and the damages caused by diseases,pests and weeds have been reduced.(6)By strengthening the management for plant genetic resources,the objectives of sharing the plant genetic resources in the country and expanding the exchanges with foreign countries have been achieved,greatly contributing to food security in both China and the world,rapid development of national economy,and increase of the farmers' income.Although China has gained remarkable achievements in conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources,there still exist a number of challenges.China needs to strengthen the cooperation with other countries and international organizations,to acquire plant genetic resources and relevant technologies from abroad,to continue the survey,exploration and collecting of plant genetic resources,especially for wild plant genetic resources and landraces which are grown in remote areas of the country,to further establish and perfect conservation systems for plant genetic resources.Therefore,we should systemetically characterize and evaluate plant genetic resources conserved and provide them for the use.The sharing of genetic resources and benefits should be further improved to promote the utilization efficiency of genetic resources in China.

Abstract:Pinus spp.are the important in forest ecosystems and plantations in the world.Genetic improvement of pines started early.Great progress has been made and marked success has been achieved.Molecular marker techniques provided powerful tools to shorten the period and raise the efficiency in tree breeding.The worldwide progress on construction of molecular marker linkage map,comparative mapping,quantitative trait locus(QTL) mapping and marker-aided selection(MAS) in Pinus spp.was reviewed.Genetic linkage maps have been constructed for nearly 40 of forest trees from 13 genera,in which pine accounted for 40%.Most of the linkage maps in pines are still incomplete,unable to cover the whole genomes.High level of genetic conservative in pine has been revealed with comparative mapping.Existence of main effect genes revealed by QTL mapping for most of the economically important traits provided a good basis for MAS.For genetic control of part of the important traits in hybrid pines,species effectwas found.Implication of species effectto MAS and the formulation of breeding strategy was also discussed.

Abstract:China is short of forest resources. The area of forest land is 1.32 million sq.km, which is 13.94% of the total land area in China. The total growing stock, including forest land, open forest and solitary trees is 11,558 million cubic meters. Each year the shortage of timber is about 90 million cubic meters. The Chinese Government pays close attention to establish man-made forests, and has decided in 1978 that 20 million hectares of fast-growing and high-yielding plantations should be set up in 30 years. By the end of year 2000, 6.6 million hectares of plantations will be established. It was also decided to establish 10 great forest environment projects. This requires a large quantity of improved planting material. Therefore tree improvement programs became an important field of forestry reconstruction in China, and developed very fast during the past 20 years.

Abstract:The patent on 23 trees species which are the emphasis of the allied study in forestry sector of China were searched at home and abroad with both the European Patent Office Database and the Chinese Patent Database as the original data source.The results showed that 402 patents were found.Based on comprehensive analysis of the patents application in terms of forest genetic improvement at home and abroad,the paper pinned down the existing problems and analyzed their causes.Specific strategies for forest genetic improvement and intellectual protection in the future were proposed in view of forestry practices and future development goals in China.

Abstract:Chinese pine ( Pinus tabuliformis Carr.) is an important ecological and timber coniferous species endemic to China. In northern China, there are vast areas of plantations and natural forests of Chinese pine, but it is unclear the genetic diversity, genetic structure, and germplasm sources of artificial populations, as well as the genetic relationship between them. Here, using nine nuclear simple sequence repeats markers, we analyzed 1310 individuals representing 38 populations of main natural and artificial populations in northern China (Shanxi, Hebei, and Liaoning provinces). The results suggested that the population from "Taiyueshan" was the core of the natural populations of Shanxi Province. We found that there were geographical effects among Chinese pine populations, and there was a relatively stronger gene flow among Chinese pine populations with close distances (between natural and artificial populations). We confirmed that most of the germplasm of the plantation populations of Hebei and Liaoning probably came from the Shanxi natural populations, and the new adaptive variations and the strong gene flow "driving force" from local natural populations had brought the opportunity for Shanxi germplasm to invade Hebei and Liaoning provinces successfully. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for the scientific allocation, management, and utilization of Chinese pine germplasm resources and promote the efficient cultivation of artificial populations.

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure Analysis of Pinus elliottii Germplasm Resources in Jiangxi Province

Abstract:This study aimed to compare and assess the genetic diversity and trends among the introduced family provenance, first-cycle superior trees breeding provenance, and improved-generation superior trees breeding provenance of Pinus elliottii using EST-SSR markers. The goal was to provide a foundation for advanced genetic improvement and sustainable utilization of P. elliottii in Jiangxi Province. A total of 417 individuals were analyzed for their genetic diversity and population structure using 19 pairs of SSR markers. The analysis identified 103 alleles across all the samples, with an average of 5.421 alleles per locus. Compared to other coniferous species, P. elliottii exhibited a moderate to high level of genetic diversity (I = 0.862, He = 0.457). Analysis of the molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed that 97.90% of the genetic variation occurred within provenances, consistent with a low genetic differentiation coefficient (Fst = 0.016 < 0.05) and high gene flow (Nm = 15.715) among provenances. In addition, analysis using STRUCTURE v. 2.3.4 software divided the 417 germplasm samples into two distinct groups, corroborating the results of the principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) and the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic (UPGMA) clustering analysis. Overall, the germplasm resources of P. elliottii exhibited rich genetic diversity, with the majority of the genetic variation occurring within provenances. For the genetic improvement of high-resin-yielding slash pines, breeding programs should prioritize populations with high genetic diversity while carefully selecting superior individuals from within those populations. These findings provide a solid foundation for breeding high-resin-yielding varieties and for future research on the sustainable utilization of these valuable resources.

Abstract:The research progresses in germplasm improvement and cultivars selection through the genetic engineering in Citrus rootstocks at home and abroad at present were summarized in order to provide a solid basis for further study and development of Citrus rootstocks.Some achievements have been gotten in raising novel Citrus rootstocks by genetic engineering methods such as Agrobacterium-mediated transformation,the method of possessed axillary bud transformation-propagation and identification in vitro,direct introduction of alien DNA and so on.Now an effective gene transfer system has been established,and also acquired a large number of transgenic plants.At the present time,the researches of genetic engineering in Citrus rootstocks are just on the beginning,the future studies will be focused on the use of genetic engineering in the resource diversity and germplasm improvement of citrus rootstocks.

Abstract:Appropriate treatment of the relationship between natural population a nd plantation is an important part of sustainable management of forest tree gene tic resource. In this paper genetic variation of fourteen autochthonous tree spe cies in China was comprehensively analyzed, including Pinus tabulae formis, Cunni nghamia lanceolata , Pinus massoniana , Ulmus pumila, Pinus armandi, Larix princi pis-rupprechtii, Picea koraiensis, Larix gmelinii, Pinus sylvestris va r. mongol ica, Larix olgensis, Pinus koraiensis, Juglans manclshumca, Platycladus oriental is and Pinus taiwanensis . Prove nance trials of these species had b een conducted and showed that there were many common characteristics of genetic variations in terms of growth traits: the occurrence of significant effects of p r ovenance, site, and interaction between provenance and site, and the existence o f obvious geographic variation in terms of growth traits. Population genetic str uctures of some species assessed using RAPD, allozyme markers, monoterpenes, etc ., were also remarked. By integrating these results, authors discussed some stra t egies for sustainable management of genetic resources in both natural stands and man-made plantations. For natural populations, it is suggested to strengthen e n vironmental protection, ex situ and in situ conservation, and to reduce human be ing disturbance. For plantations, different genetic materials are required so as to reduce the contamination to natural populations caused by gene flow.

Abstract:Rosaceae fruits are very important for fruit production in China and worldwide.Recently,significant advances in regeneration and genetic transformation of Rosaceae have been achieved and applied to various Rosaceae trees and fruits.However,the factors affecting the process of regeneration and transformation have not been reviewed in detail.This paper reviews recent progress in the regeneration pathway,factors affecting regeneration,genetically modified species and main traits,and the factors affecting Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation.The differences between species of Rosaceae fruits are emphasized,and the trends and areas for future studies are highlighted.
Estimation of Genetic Diversity between and within Biparental Clones and Full-Sib Families of the Chinese Pine Using SSR Markers

Abstract:Quantifying the genetic diversity present in plant populations is crucial for the success of selection of elite plants and breeding programs. The population structure and partition of genetic variance within and between plant populations allows inferences about the distribution and extent of variation available in plant breeding populations. The Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis Carriere) is a native species that is ecologically and economically important to Northern China. Studying the genetic variation and partition of P. tabuliformis will be invaluable for its efficient utilization. In this study, we selected 21 pairs of SSR primers to estimate the genetic diversity of 35 clones from four populations and 216 progenies from 22 full-sib families of P. tabuliformis. Our results showed that P. tabuliformis was a typical outcrossing plant (FIS = −0.053/−0.165) containing moderately high genetic diversity (He = 0.542/0.605) both for the clone populations and the progenies produced by the clone crosses via controlled pollination. The genetic differentiation between the clones (FST = 0.076) was lower than that between the full-sib progenies (FST = 0.155). Such diverse FST may be promoted by different gene flows (Nm = 3.881/1.546) due to distinct pollination patterns. The clustering methods showed a lack of significant division of the clone populations, with a similar genetic admixture found for each of the clones. However, two groups were found between the full-sib families with genetic admixture between them. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that the most plentiful genetic variability exists between the cloned individuals (98%) as well as within the full-sib progenies (89%). Such distribution of genetic variation suggests rich internal variance and thus it is feasible to select the elite plants within each population or family. These results provide genetic materials and theoretical guidance for the selection and breeding of the Chinese pine.

Abstract:With the rapid development of economic globalization, invasive species have become a far-reaching global issue. Impacts of invasive insects on agriculture, forestry, ecology, socio-economy and human health are becoming increasingly serious and cause for concern. In this paper, we introduce advances in theoretical and applied research on 14 invasive insects in China and summarize novel theory, methods and recent progress. Perspectives and directions for future research on invasive insects are discussed. The results provide new insights for the early warning, prevention, detection, monitoring, management, and control, of invasive insects.

Abstract:Owing to a severe decline in its abundance, Pinus dabeshanensis has been listed as an endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Although several restoration events have been undertaken since the 1960s, the natural population genetic structure of this species remains to be investigated. Herein, we examined the level of genetic diversity and structure of two native and two non-native populations using 10 microsatellite loci. A relatively high level of genetic variation (HO = 0.586 ± 0.039) and a low level of population differentiation (FST = 0.016 ± 0.011) were revealed. For forensic investigation, an assignment test was performed. To better understand the genetic differentiation between the native and non-native populations, the individuals in the transplanted and cultivated populations may have derived from populations that were not surveyed in this study. In light of our results, we discuss the real problems faced by all four populations and provide useful information for management decision-making.

Abstract:Pinus yunnanensis Franch. is an economically and ecologically important pine endemic to southwest China. A large number of low-quality and low-efficiency individuals have appeared in P. yunnanensis forests due to climate change, environmental stress, and human overexploitation. There is a lack of comprehensive information about the genetic diversity, population structure and a core germplasm collection establishment with individuals taken across its natural range. Understanding the important information will be invaluable for germplasm efficient conservation and utilization. A total of 287 individuals from 10 populations across its range were analyzed using 17 polymorphic microsatellite markers. The research revealed P. yunnanensis was a typical outcrossing plant ( F is = − 0.1), maintaining moderately high genetic diversity ( H e = 0.540). The continuous distribution and wind-dispersal traits of two-sacs pollen and winged seeds may have promoted gene flow ( N m = 12.71) and lessened genetic differentiation between populations ( F st = 0.023). There was a lack of significant isolation by distance ( P = 0.07). Geographical and ecological isolation following the uplift of the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau may have contributed to the formation of three discrete groups ( K = 3). A core collection of 72 individuals (25% of the whole collection) was established, of which genetic diversity parameters showed no-significance from the whole collection. In situ conservation of the three populations (XC, CY, and XP) showing distinct genetic diversity was recommended, and ex situ conservation for individuals with private alleles. The core collection was recommended as a possible germplasm resource for tree breeding and improvement.
