Abstract:Genetic diversity of seed yield characteristics was studied with different varieties of alfalfas using morphological, a field study was conducted from 2005 to 2006 in Linze county of Zhangye city, Gansu province, genetic diversity of seed yield and its components were investigated in 62 alfalfa germplasm resources belonging to 55 varieties which grew in the fourth year under row sowing condition. Variation of seed yields was large a-mong varieties, and the two years results also showed that each of the seed yield components among varieties and be-tween years vaired greatly. All the seed yield components varied among varieties, and there were significantly dif-ferences between domestic varieties and introduced varieties except number of seeds per pod. The number of inflo-rescences per fertile shoot was significantly correlated with seed yield in two years, it was stressed that the number of inflorescences fer fertile shoot could be an useful character to be used as a selection criterion for increasing the seed yield potential of alfalfa row sowing condition. The mean percentage of actual seed yield accounted for poten-tial seed yield (ASY/PSY) was less than 4% in two years, most of them was between 1% and 2%, and difference significantly was found among varieties and between years. It was found that 1 000 seed weight was different sig-nificantly among all domestic sources, but not different in introduced sources (p>0.05).

Abstract:Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) has the characteristics of strong adaptability, high protein content, good palatability, and rich nutritional value, and has the largest cultivation area among forage species in the world. With the rapid development of biotechnology, improvement in alfalfa using genetic engineering has become a current topic in China and abroad. In this paper, we mainly summarize and review the progress in three methods used in the genetic transformation of alfalfa, including vector-mediation, direct DNA insertion, and germplasm system mediation, and five utility aspects of alfalfa improvement using genetic engineering, including improvement in antibiotic stress, antibiotic resistance, herbicide resistance, quality, and bioreactor development. The application potential of genetic engineering in improvement in alfalfa and safety were explored to provide a reference for such technology.

Abstract:Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) is a perennial and outcrossing species, widely grown as a forage legume for hay, pasture and silage.The genetic engineering approaches involve the transfer of useful or novel gene(s) into alfalfa to improve desired traits.The recent development of genetic engineering is extensively applied to basic and applied research for alfalfa improvement, including improvement of herbicide resistance, reinforcement of the resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, production of novel compounds, improved yield for industrial and/ or pharmaceutical proteins and renewable energy sources.On the other hand, alfalfa forage needs to possess additional fermentable carbohydrates, proteins with a balanced amino acid profile that are gradually degraded in the rumen of domestic livestock, and zero anti-nutritional factors, which are the major concerns of recent interest in alfalfa.However, an advance of transgenic approach is contentious, requiring vigilant experimental methods and design to contest bio-safety challenges.More importantly, the technology of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) is rapidly growing and might be a game player or changer in alfalfa.The present review can enable us to identify the proper direction, get familiar with new research methods and success of genetic engineering technology in alfalfa, to produce maximally improved cultivars.

Abstract:The genetics and breeding of tea plant are important research areas of tea science disciplines, which involve the study on genetic mechanism and breeding technology of tea plants.In 2016, there were 154 academic papers involving in the research field of genetics and breeding of tea plants, among which 80 were published in domestic journals.The topics of these papers included tea germplasm resources and their classification, innovation of breeding materials, identification and breeding of improved tea cultivars, propagation and cultivation of the obtained thoroughbred tea cultivars.The advances in tea genetics and breeding in 2016 were reviewed in the present paper, which provides reference for related researchers.

Abstract:Alfalfa is widely distributed worldwide and is one of the most important forage legumes.It is well-known as "the king of forage" because of its high yield,high quality,biological nitrogen fixation,etc.Alfalfa has a long history of having been planted in China and having maintained a high economic value.According to previous research,there are 46 species in the Medicago sativa L.genus.Studies on alfalfa breeding occurred later and have made a significant amount of progress in recent decades.By the end of 2014,a total of 77 alfalfa varieties had been registered,and 36 of them had been bred by crossbreeding technology.Alfalfa is not only an important high-protein type of forage but is also a soil and water conservation plant;thus,alfalfa has both important economic and ecological functions.Furthermore,the excellent germplasm resources of alfalfa have been discovered for breeding new alfalfa cultivars,which can not only increase the forage yield but can also accelerate the development of the dairy industry.Moreover,alfalfa can improve soil fertility as an important ecological protection for plants.Therefore,the development of the alfalfa industry plays an important role in the sustainable development of agriculture in China.This paper reviewed the distribution,germplasm resources,genetic breeding,and utilization of alfalfa on the basis of the present situation of alfalfa in China.It may provide some reference for future research of alfalfa.

Abstract:A high-density molecular linkage map will be of value for studies designed to assay genetic variation,identify markers associated with dissect quantitative trait loci,and perform marker-assisted selection to improve agronomically important traits within plants.By polyploid nature and high levels of heterozygosity of vast majority pasture plants,it was rather complicated to construct linkage maps of them.Now an extensive lists of linkage maps have been drafted.The objective of this paper is to introduce the present conditions of link-age maps construction and available measures as well as contributing some suggestions for scaling quality genetic maps of forages.

Abstract:Characteristics of female fertility in alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) is closely related to seed yield.The realized seed yield of alfalfa is much lower than that of potential seed yield,which is mainly caused by the high percentage of female sterility.In this paper,the progresses of cytological mechanisms of female gametophyte and embryo development,types of female sterility,genetic control of female sterility and female sterile genes mapping have been reviewed.The problems in the studies of the female sterility were discussed and the knowledge provided here will be useful in increasing the seed production of this important perennial legume forages.

Abstract:Research advances in genetics and breeding of tea in 2011 were reviewed. Useful tea germplasms were transformed into productivity through close association of germplasms collection and application. Studies on DNA markers and gene cloning were hot spots in the basic research field. Chemical and morphological identifications were major techniques for appraising quality potential of tea cuhivars. Quality and productivity efficiency were promoted by close combination of good agricultural practices and well-bred tea eultivars. Ecological adoptability of tea cultivars was the focus of attention. Some new tea cultivars were released in this year.

Abstract:Most characters related to production,quality,and resistance of crop are quantitative traits. In recent years,more and more QTLs of important traits in crop have been mapped and cloned. Meanwhile,with the technological breakthrough of high-throughput sequencing,some new methodologies such as genomewide association study has been used to analyze the genetic basis of quantitative traits. This provides an opportunity for highly efficient QTL discovery and genetic improvement by QTL pyramiding. In this paper,we reviewed the current methodology and major progresses of QTL discovery,QTL cloning,and marker-assisted selection of quantitative traits in crop.
