Abstract:Interstitial Cells of Cajal(ICC) in the gastrointestinal(GI) tract were considered to be pacemaker cells for GI movement, but the generating mechanism is not well known yet. Recent studies have strongly suggested that some ions, such as Ca 2+ ?Na +?K +?Cl -,may be involved in the pacemaking activity of ICC. It seems that the pacemaker current was composed of multi-cations and they were conducted by Ca 2+ -regulated voltage-independent non-selective cation channel. Among the ion currents, Ca 2+ was considered to play a key role in ICC of the GI tract. This review will discuss the regulating mechanisms of the pacemaking activity of ICC in order to understand the pathogenesis of GI motor dysfunctional diseases.
