Abstract:Underground coal gasification is of great strategic significance to the effective and clean development of coal resources and scale up production of natural gas worldwide. Selection evaluation is the foundation of the exploration and development of underground coal gasification. In this paper, the differences between mid-deep (500–2200 m) and shallow layer (<500 m) underground coal gasification are analyzed, the key parameters affecting underground coal gasification are clearly identified, and the selection evaluation technology system is established. The results show that there are great differences between mid-deep and shallow layer underground coal gasification in terms of furnace construction site selection, engineering process, gasification efficiency and gasification products, the former is the main development direction in the future considering the resource potential, gasification efficiency, environmental protection and technological progress. The research of mid-deep underground coal gasification selecting should be carried out step by step with “favorable area-favorable zone-favorable zone ranking-favorable target” evaluation system. In the early stage of exploration, the product of thickness and volatiles can be used as a rapid evaluation index. Within the suitable range, the larger the index is, the more favorable it is, and when the index is greater than 3, it is defined as the favorable area. Further, ten key geological parameters of coal seam geological conditions, coal-rock and coal-quality characteristics and structural hydrologic conditions are selected and graded during zone evaluation according to different threshold ranges. At the same time, a favorable zone queuing method based on the two-factor evaluation method is established. Additionally, the final target site selection is established with more detailed evaluation parameters, such as process performance parameters, gasification characteristics parameters, technical recoverable indicators, economic recoverable indicators. The study provides the siting selection technology for the middle deep coal underground gasification, which is of great significant for the development of coal underground gasification industry.

Abstract:Based on the present situation and trend of underground coal gasification in China and overseas, this article puts forward the basic concept, mechanism and mode of underground coal gasification, and presents the challenges, development potential and development path now faced. In China, underground coal gasification which is in accord with the clean utilization of coal can produce “artificial gas”, which provides a new strategic approach to supply methane and hydrogen with Chinese characteristics before new energy sources offer large-scale supply. Coal measure strata in oil-bearing basins are developed in China, with 3.77 trillion tons coal reserves for the buried depth of 1 000−3 000 m. It is initially expected that the amount of natural gas resources from underground coal gasification to be 272−332 trillion cubic meters, which are about triple the sum of conventional natural gas, or equivalent to the total unconventional natural gas resources. According to the differences of coal reaction mechanism and product composition of underground coal gasification, the underground coal gasification can be divided into three development modes, hydrogen-rich in shallow, methane-rich in medium and deep, supercritical hydrogen-rich in deep. Beyond the scope of underground mining of coal enterprises, petroleum and petrochemical enterprises can take their own integration advantages of technologies, pipeline, market and so on, to develop underground coal gasification business based on their different needs and technical maturity, to effectively exploit a large amount of coal resources cleanly and to alleviate the tight supply of natural gas. It can also be combined with using the produced hydrogen in nearby area and the CO2 flooding and storage in adjacent oil areas to create a demonstration zone for net zero emissions of petroleum and petrochemical recycling economy. It is significant for reserving resources and technologies for the coming “hydrogen economy” era, and opening up a new path for China’s “clean, low carbon, safe and efficient” modern energy system construction.

Abstract:To solve the construction ventilation problem of super long (length greater than 10000 m) tunnel passing through discrete lenticular gas bag tunnel under complex working conditions in carbonaceous shale stratum, relying on the construction of Banzhulin tunnel of the new Xuyong-Bijie Railway (Sichuan-Yunnan). Using the finite element analysis software, the flow field distribution of the tunnel return air flow in the case of simultaneous excavation of multiple working faces is simulated, and the formation position and influence range of the vortex area which is easy to form gas accumulation are analyzed. On this basis, the technical team developed the PLC uninterruptible self starting ventilation power supply control program. By comparing the changes in the time required for ventilation power supply failure before and after the adoption of this technology, and the comparison of the gas concentration in the return air flow within a relatively short time of the failure, it is proved that this technology reduces the fault response time to 15.74% of the original time, and can well avoid gas accumulation within the failure time, It provides some reference for similar engineering construction.

Abstract:Abstract This paper will introduce a novel source of unconventional gas, called Underground Coal Gasification (UCG), also known as In-Situ Gasification (ISG), which has been around for a long time. Due to the inexpensive cost of oil and gas, along with the abundance of coal and the low cost of mining coal seams close to the surface, UCG has not attracted a lot of attention in the past. With the demand and price for gas increasing and the move away from mining coal, UCG is becoming more attractive as a way of extracting energy from deep uneconomic coal deposits and at the same time, lowering GHG emissions and reducing the environmental impact to the landscape. With the majority of the world's coal deposits being uneconomic to mine and with the lack of gas reserves in most countries, UCG provides the perfect alternative to produce gas from coal without the environmental impact. There are numerous advantages to extracting syngas from coal seams, when compared to conventional coal mining and to CSG (Coal Seam Gas).

Abstract:In the increasingly severe environment of the "dual carbon" situation and the urgent objective demand for national energy transformation and upgrading, the development and use of clean energy have become a new research field and direction. Underground coal gasification technology (UCG) is a clean coal technology that completely bypasses the traditional coal combustion process by converting coal underground into gas and then classifying and recycling it. This method removes sulfur before fuel combustion Nitrogen compounds and particles make it clean like natural gas. The most commonly used ignition method in this technology is chemical ignition. A certain proportion of ignition fuel and main fuel is injected into the underground through pipelines, and then combustion supporting gas is introduced to cause a chemical reaction and generate an open flame to ignite the coal. However, due to the complex internal environment of the pipeline, uneven bending of the pipeline column, and the length of the pipeline exceeding one kilometer, the concentration threshold of the ignition fuel when it reaches the underground igniter cannot be accurately controlled, resulting in ignition failure. In response to the above difficulties, this article has conducted research on the ignition mechanism of ignition fuel, and developed a dedicated ground simulation test bench to conduct ground simulation experiments. The research has strong support for the on-site pilot testing and engineering services of underground coal gasification technology.

Abstract:Although coal mining has played a substantial role in world’s development as a critical fuel source for at least 25 years, its value is partly offset by the massive environmental issues it presents during combustion. The shift to a net-zero CO 2 emission will open unique possibilities for new coal technological models in which progressive studies and policies, development, and modernization will play a significant role. Therefore, a collection of technologies has been proposed, one of which is cost-effective is the Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) coupled with carbon capture storage (CCS) and utilization technology (CCU) UCG-CCS/CCU. This paper reviews the current status and technology development in implementing low carbon emission energy on underground coal gasification. The study, therefore, leads to discussing the modern stage of underground coal gasification and carbon capture storage development, recent pilot operations, and current developments of the growing market. At the same time, it provides a reference for underground coal gasification combined with CCUS technology.

Abstract:Underground coal gasification is a conversion and extraction process, for the production of useful synthetic product gas from an in-situ coal seam, to use in power generation, heat production or as a chemical feedstock. While many variants of the underground coal gasification process have been considered and over 75 trials performed throughout the world, the recent work has tended to focus on the control of the process, its environmental impact on underground and surface conditions and its potential for carbon capture and storage. Academic research has produced a set of mathematical models of underground coal gasification, and the European Union-supported programme has addressed the production of a decarbonised product gas for carbon capture and storage. In recent years, significant progress has been made into the modelling of tar formation, spalling, flows within the cavity and the control of minor gasification components, like BTEX and phenols, from underground coal gasification cavities (BTEX refers to the chemicals benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene). The paper reviews the most recent underground coal gasification field trial and modelling experience and refers to the pubic concern and caution by regulators that arise when a commercial or pilot-scale project seeks approval. It will propose solutions for the next generation of underground coal gasification projects. These include the need to access deeper coal seams and the use of new techniques for modelling the process.

Abstract:Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a promising option for the future use of un-worked coal. UCG permits coal to be gasified in situ within the coal seam, via a matrix of wells. The coal is ignited and air is injected underground to sustain a fire, which is essentially used to “mine” the coal and produce a combustible synthetic gas which can be used for industrial heating, power generation or the manufacture of hydrogen, synthetic natural gas or diesel fuel. As compared with conventional mining and surface gasification, UCG promises lower capital/operating costs and also has other advantages, such as no human labor underground. In addition, UCG has the potential to be linked with carbon capture and sequestration. The increasing demand for energy, depletion of oil, and gas resources, and threat of global climate change have lead to growing interest in UCG throughout the world. The potential for UCG to access low grade, inaccessible coal resources and convert them commercially and competitively into syngas is enormous, with potential applications in power, fuel, and chemical production. This article reviews the literature on UCG and research contributions are reported UCG with main emphasis given to the chemical and physical characteristic of feedstock, process chemistry, gasifier designs, and operating conditions. This is done to provide a general background and allow the reader to understand the influence of operating variables on UCG. Thermodynamic studies of UCG with emphasis on gasifier operation optimization based on thermodynamics, biomass gasification reaction engineering and particularly recently developed kinetic models, advantages and the technical challenges for UCG, and finally, the future prospects for UCG technology are also reviewed.

Abstract:Using carbon dioxide as a gasification agent for underground coal gasification (UCG) can not only reduce carbon dioxide emissions but is also expected to lead to a new natural gas technology revolution and ensure national energy security. To explore the effect of the oxygen content in oxygen-enriched carbon dioxide gasification agents on the results of gasification experiments, underground gasification experiments under different oxygen-enrichment conditions were designed, and quantitative parameters were used to analyze and evaluate the gas produced in the gasification experiments. The results showed that as the oxygen content in the oxygen-enriched carbon dioxide gasification agent increased, the CO and H2 in the combustible gas gradually increased, and the calorific value of the combustible gas also slowly increased, reaching a peak value under the gasification condition of 60% oxygen concentration, and then decreased slightly; the product formation rate and the gas production per unit mass of coal fluctuated. The coal consumption rate increased with time and was relatively stable. According to theoretical calculations for the gasification energy recovery evaluation system, the overall energy recovery rate was 56.34%, and the energy utilization rate was relatively high. Research on quantitative indicators based on gas production data has good practical significance for evaluating the gasification efficiency of UCG, which can be used to better evaluate and control the reaction process of UCG.

Abstract:The underground coal gasification (UCG) process represents a modern and effective coal mining technology that enables coal energy extraction through thermic decomposition. The coal is transformed into syngas by oxidizers (e.g., air, technical oxygen, or water steam) and is injected into a georeactor. The produced syngas is exhausted on the surface, where it is transformed into the desired form of energy. This paper presents an experimental study of two experiments performed in ex-situ reactors. The paper describes the equipment for the UCG process, the physical models of the coal seam, and the analysis of coal. The obtained results from the experiments are presented as the behavior of the temperatures in the coal during the experiment, the syngas composition, and its calorific value. The material balance and effective gasification time of the UCG process were also identified for the individual experiments. The aim was to evaluate the impact of the coal seam model on the gasification process efficiency. Calculating the material balance during the gasification appears to be an effective tool for assessing leaks in the reactor while measuring the flow and concentration of the oxidizers and produced gas. The material balance data are make it possible to propose methods for controlling the input oxidizers. To increase the efficiency of the gasification in an ex-situ reactor, it is necessary to ensure the impermeable or poorly permeable surrounding layers of the coal seam.

Abstract:Underground coal gasification (UCG) has been shown to be a promising method for deep coal resources. A series of complicated chemical reactions can induce a considerable change in the pore structure of coal and thus promote the UCG process in turn. Currently, most studies on the effect of elevated temperature on the pore structure of coal were not involved in an air atmosphere, bringing a series of difficulties to understanding the pore structure evolution of gasified coal in the UCG process. The objective of this work was to investigate the pore structure evolution of coal heated in nitrogen and air atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Thermogravimetry tests were first conducted to gasify coal samples, and then, the method scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the microscopic morphology of the pore structure. Besides, the effect of final temperature, atmosphere, pressure, and residence time on the thermal dynamics of coal at elevated temperatures was comprehensively discussed. Results indicated that the temperature range of a heating process of coal can be classified into three stages, 25–320 °C, 320–750 °C, and 750–1000 °C. For the three temperature ranges, drying, primary pyrolysis, and secondary pyrolysis can dominate, respectively, under a nitrogen atmosphere, while the combustion and gasification process will prevail at a high temperature under an air atmosphere. Because of mass loss, the coal was becoming porous during the heating process. Compared with the intact structure of coal when the temperature is lower than 300 °C, the pore space can interconnect under moderate-temperature conditions (500 °C) like a honeycomb, and then, only an ash framework remained under a higher-temperature condition (700 °C) under an air atmosphere. In comparison, the coal heated in a nitrogen atmosphere can gradually turn into a porous char. This investigation can provide some new insights into the pore structure evolution of gasified coal and contribute to the mechanisms of a UCG process.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In this paper, the idea of Underground coal gasification coupled with supercritical carbon dioxide storage is proposed based on the problems of Underground coal gasification combustion area and carbon dioxide storage site, which provides a new technical approach for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality in the coal sector. At the same time, to solve the underground coal pillar design problem in the popularization and application of UCG-CCS, this paper adopts numerical simulation and theoretical analysis methods to reveal the deformation mechanism and bearing characteristics of "hyperbolic" type coal pillar in UCG-CCS. The results of this study are as follows: 1 The injection of supercritical CO 2 into the underground goaf can effectively reduce the load of the coal pillar bearing the overlying strata and improve the bearing capacity of the "hyperbolic" protective coal pillar. 2 The size of the "hyperbolic" coal pillar in UCG-CCS slightly influences the coal pillar's stability under certain injection pressure. For safety in practical engineering, it is necessary to ensure that the CO 2 injection pressure reaches its critical pressure of 7.38 MPa. 3 Based on numerical simulation results, when the width of the combustion cavity is 40 m, the width of the protective coal pillar is 56 m, the injection pressure of supercritical CO 2 is 7.38 MPa, and the sealing depth ranges from 800 m to 1200 m, the protective coal pillars are in a stable state due to the pressure effect of supercritical CO 2 on the coal pillar and the roof. The research results of this paper have important practical significance for promoting the site selection, product design, and application of UCG-CCS and provide a technical means for the coal industry to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality.

Application of integrated drilling and stamping technology in gas extraction through layer drilling

Abstract:In coal mine gas extraction in China, the current hydraulic permeability enhancement measures generally have complex processes, low adaptability, long operation time, and high labor intensity. This makes it challenging to meet the requirements of coal mining enterprises for safe and efficient mining, and there is an urgent need to develop new technologies to enhance gas extraction and production. This paper proposed an integrated drilling and stamping technology to enhance gas extraction and production and integrates drilling, hydraulic jet fracturing, and hydraulic punching to enhance the permeability of coal seams. A field test was conducted using the specially-developed integrated drilling and stamping equipment to extract gas from the 16101 bottom pumping lane penetration hole in the Jiulishan Mine, Jiaozuo, Henan. The test results show that compared with the hydraulic punching technology previously used in the mine, the punching time of the soft coal seam was shortened by 66–75%, the coal output was increased by 1.7 times, and the punching hole aperture was increased by 1.3 times. Hydraulic injection fracturing was successfully performed to increase the permeability of the hard coal seams, and the fracturing formed a shot hole depth of 345–539 mm. After the integrated drilling and stamping of the drill holes, the coal output, gas extraction concentration, pure gas extraction volume, and coal seam permeability coefficient increased by 2.4, 2.2, 4, and 37.3 times, respectively. The gas flow decay coefficient of the drills holes was also further reduced, which significantly improved the extractionefficiency. Thus the integrated drilling and stamping technology can transform the process of gas extraction from regular extraction to quick, economic, pure, and clean extraction. Thus, this technology has large applicable value for underground gas management in coal mines.

Abstract:The underground coal gasification (UCG) technology converts coal into product gas and provides the option of environmentally and economically attractive coal mining. Obtained syngas can be used for heating, electricity, or chemical production. Numerous laboratory coal gasification trials have been performed in the academic and industrial fields. Lab-scale tests can provide insight into the processes involved with UCG. Many tests with UCG have been performed on ex situ reactors, where different UCG techniques, the effect of gasification agents, their flow rates, pressures, and various control mechanisms to improve gasification efficiency and syngas production have been investigated. This paper provides an overview of recent research on UCG performed on a lab scale. The study focuses on UCG control variables and their optimization, the effect of gasification agents and operating pressure, and it discusses results from the gasification of various lignites and hard coals, the possibilities of steam gasification, hydrogen, and methane-oriented coal gasification, approaches in temperature modeling, changes in coal properties during gasification, and environmental risks of UCG. The review focuses on laboratory tests of UCG on ex situ reactors, results, and the possibility of knowledge transfer to in situ operation.

A novel technology for high-efficiency borehole-enlarging to enhance gas drainage in coal seam by mechanical cutting assisted by waterjet

Abstract:Although the effect of pressure relief and permeability increasing achieved by the technology of traditional hydraulic flushing (enlarging hole by high-pressure water jet) is great significance, it has some shortcomings, such as low efficiency, large consumption of water resources, and being difficult to guarantee the sizes of holes. The limitations of water jet are known as the main factors that would restrict the effective pressure relief in soft and low-permeability coal seam. For the purpose of solving the problems existing in the traditional technology, a new technology of mechanical cutting assisted by waterjet has been developed. Then, a numerical simulation method was employed to illustrate the flow field and the force characteristics of equipment equipped with new technology. Finally, the new technology and its supporting system were tested in the Xinjing Coal Mine, Shanxi Province, China. The test results obtained are as follows: the efficiency of mechanical cutting is much higher than that of hydraulic flushing; the maximum equivalent to enlarge hole radius is increased by 83.3% (t = 30 min), and the efficiency of the new technology is 3 times more than that of the traditional hydraulic flushing; the time used for gas drainage is increased by 19.3%, and the drainage efficiency is increased by 28%; the cost spent on gas control in one working face decreases by more than 14.7%. It is concluded that the new technology can efficiently enlarge borehole so as to enhance gas drainage in coal seam and decrease the cost of coal mining.

Abstract:Underground Coal Gasification is the conversion of solid Coal to gas in-situ by heating the coal and injecting oxidants air/oxygen to cause the gasification by partial combustion instead of complete combustion of coal. UCG is the promising technology having a lot of health, safety and environmental advantages over the conventional mining techniques; the major motivational aspects of UCG involves increased worker health and safety by using no man underground, no surface disposal of ash and coal tailings, low dust and noise pollution, low water consumption, larger coal reserves exploitation, and low volatile organic components, methane and green house gases emission to atmosphere. UCG is an inherently clean coal technology as it reduces deadly sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions to very low levels. Total solid waste from UCG is typically half the volume generated by conventional coal plants and water use is substantially lower as well.

Abstract:As a clean coal technology, underground coal gasification (UCG) boasts a prospect in tapping worldwide deep coal seams, with a tremendous potential to be linked with following carbon storage and sequestration. Therefore, UCG ought to play a vital role as a sustainable technological alternative in a climate-conscious world. However, the world has very limited experience in deep UCG development because most of the tests were on shallow coals. This paper aims to bridge the knowledge gap to shed light on the development of UCG cavities in deep coal seams. A large-scale 3D UCG model was constructed with an improved Controlled Retraction Injection Point (CRIP) method, which is more suitable to deep UCG. In addition, the effect of double-diffusive natural convection was included. Modelling results show that the improved method contributed to a favourable development of UCG cavities in deep coal seams with a good gas production. Compared to a shallow UCG, pore variations exhibited a similar pattern but with distinct characteristics owing to the effects of a high pressure. Furthermore, double-diffusive natural convection was revealed to play an important role in the development of cavities and the general UCG performance. The relevant findings will help enhance the knowledge base of UCG operations in world deep coal seams, promote the clean utilization of world coal resources, and if linked to carbon dioxide storage and sequestration, contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in a climate-conscious world.
