Abstract:Nelumbo nucifera, or sacred lotus, has been valuable for us to use as vegetable, functional food, and herb medicine for over 2,000 years. The purpose of this article is to systematically review the traditional/modern uses, chemical compositions and pharmacological activities on different parts of N. nucifera. Traditionally, this plant has been used to treat chronic dyspepsia, hematuria, insomnia, nervous disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and hyperlipidemia. Now, phytochemical investigations on different parts of N. nucifera have indicated a wide spectrum of at least 255 constituents belonging to different chemical groups, including proteins, amino acids, polysaccharides, starch, flavonoids, alkaloids, essential oils, triterpenoids, steroids, and glycosides. Meanwhile, its pharmacological activities, including anti-obesity, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular, hepatoprotective, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, antitumor, memory-improving and antiviral activities, have also been reviewed, together with its applications in health food industry and clinic uses of its single plant or herbal formulae. Herein, this review will provide state-of-the-art overview on its traditional and modern uses in food industry and medicines, together with the comprehensive profiles of phytochemicals, and health promoting bioactivities of this valuable plant. In addition, the new perspectives and future challenges in the research on lotus are also outlined.

Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety

Abstract:Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., also known as the sacred lotus, is extensively cultivated in Southeast Asia, primarily for food and as an herbal medicine. This article reviews studies published between 1995 and 2017, on flavonoid and phenolic acid profiles and contents of 154 different cultivars of lotus. So far, some 12 phenolic acids and 89 to 90 flavonoids (47 flavonols, 25 to 26 flavons, 8 flavan-3-ols, 4 flavanons, and 5 anthocyanins) have been isolated from different parts of the lotus plant, including its leaves (whole leaf, leaf pulp, leaf vein, and leaf stalk), seeds (seedpod, epicarp, coat, kernel, and embryo), and flowers (stamen, petal, pistil, and stalk), although not all of them have been quantified. Factors affecting flavonoids and phenolic acid profiles, including types of tissues and extracting factors, are discussed in this review, in order to maximize the application of the lotus and its polyphenols in the food industry. Health promotion activities, attributed to the presence of flavonoids and phenolic acids, are described along with toxicology studies, illustrating appropriate usage and safe consumption dosages of lotus extracts. This review also presents the controversies and discusses the research gaps that limit our ability to obtain a thorough understanding of the bioactivities of lotus extracts.

Abstract:Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn is a recognised herbal plant in ancient medical sciences. Each portion of the plant leaf, flower, seed and rhizome is utilised for nutritional and medicinal purposes. The chemical compositions like phenol, alkaloids, glycoside, terpenoids and steroids have been isolated. The plant contains various nutritional values like lipids, proteins, amino acids, minerals, carbohydrates, and fatty acids. Traditional medicine confirms that the phytochemicals of plants give significant benefits to the treatment of various diseases such as leukoderma, smallpox, dysentery, haematemesis, coughing, haemorrhage, metrorrhagia, haematuria, fever, hyperlipidaemia, cholera, hepatopathy and hyperdipsia. To verify the traditional claims, researchers have conducted scientific biological in vivo and in vitro screenings, which have exhibited that the plant keeps various notable pharmacological activities such as anticancer, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, antiviral, hypolipidemic, anti‐obesity, antipyretic, hypoglycaemic, antifungal, anti‐inflammatory and antibacterial activities. This review, summaries the nutritional composition, chemical constituents and biological activities substantiated by the researchers done in vivo and in vitro.

Study on the vasodilatory activity of lotus leaf extract and its representative substance nuciferine on thoracic aorta in rats

Abstract:Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) leaves are widely used for both edible and medicinal applications. For its further utilization, we studied the vasodilatory activity of lotus leaf extract for the first time. In this study, we obtained the extracts using different ratios of water and ethanol, which was followed by polarity-dependent extraction. We found that the CH2Cl2 layer exhibited better vasodilatory activity (EC50 = 1.21 & PLUSMN; 0.10 mu g/ml). HPLC and ESI-HRMS analysis of the CH2Cl2 layer using the standard product as a control revealed that nuciferine (E-max = 97.95 +/- 0.76%, EC50 = 0.36 +/- 0.02 mu M) was the main component in this layer. Further research revealed that nuciferine exerts a multi-target synergistic effect to promote vasodilation, via the NO signaling pathway, K+ channel, Ca2+ channel, intracellular Ca2+ release, alpha and beta receptors, etc. Nuciferine exhibits good vasodilatory activity, and it exhibits the potential to be utilized as a lead compound.

Abstract:Lotus is a good source of medical herbs. Analyzing lotus components will enable us to make better use of lotus resources. Compounds of nelumbo lotus have been analyzed by using GC-MS and GC, and 48 volatile compounds have been identified from nelumbo lotus which counted up to 92.5% of the total peak area, and 4 alkaloids of nelumbo lotus have been identified by GC-MS.

Abstract:This comprehensive review systematically examines the multifarious aspects of Nelumbo nucifera , elucidating its ecological, nutritional, medicinal, and biomimetic significance. Renowned both culturally and scientifically, Nelumbo nucifera manifests remarkable adaptability, characterized by its extensive distribution across varied climatic regions, underpinned by its robust rhizome system and prolific reproductive strategies. Ecologically, this species plays a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, primarily through biofiltration, thereby enhancing habitat biodiversity. The rhizomes and seeds of Nelumbo nucifera are nutritionally significant, being rich sources of dietary fiber, essential vitamins, and minerals, and have found extensive culinary applications. From a medicinal perspective, diverse constituents of Nelumbo nucifera exhibit therapeutic potential, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. Recent advancements in preservation technology and culinary innovation have further underscored its role in the food industry, highlighting its nutritional versatility. In biomimetics, the unique "lotus effect" is leveraged for the development of self-cleaning materials. Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to isolate and elucidate the structure of water-soluble constituents from Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. leaves and evaluate their anti-aging effect. Methods: The natural products were isolated from the 60% aqueous acetone extract of the leaves of N. nucifera by column chromatography on MCI gel CHP 20P, YMC-Gel ODS-AQ-HG, and TSK gel Toyopearl HW-40F. Their structures were elucidated using high-resolution-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, one-dimensional and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and electronic circular dichroism spectroscopy. The anti-aging activity was evaluated in the Caenorhabditis elegans model. Results/Conclusion: One novel flavonoid nuciferanoid (1), together with eleven known compounds, were isolated from the extract of the leaves of N. nucifera. Among them, compound 1 could be a starting point for further development of anti-aging drugs.

Abstract:It has been confirmed that flavonoids in the leaves of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn (lotus leaves) have many pharmacological activities. Currently, total flavones in the leaves of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn have been studied extensively, however, only a few researches were able to investigate the individual components in it. At first, crude extract was obtained from lotus leaves by reflux extraction using 60% ethanol for three times. Then, the concentrated crude extract was separated on a D-101 column (eluted with 70% ethanol) and a polyamide column (step gradient 15% to 90% ethanol). The Fr-1 fraction was obtained from the eluate of 45% ethanol and was subjected to a preparative reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatograph (RP-HPLC) for the isolation of target components. The preparation of the individual flavonoids was carried out on an RP-HPLC with a Symmetry Prep C18 column, and the mobile phase was water-acetonitrile at a flow rate of 5.0 mL/min. Three compounds were identified with ultra violet absorbance (UV), infrared (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometry (MS). They were hyperin, isoquercetin and astragalin. To our knowledge that astragalin was the first time successfully isolated from this plant. The purity of the three compounds was all over 97%.

Abstract:Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. (lotus) is a widely distributed plant with a long history of cultivation and consumption. Almost all parts of the lotus can be used as foodstuff and nourishment, or as an herb. It is noteworthy that the polysaccharides obtained from lotus exhibit surprisingly and satisfying biological activities, which explains the various benefits of lotus to human health, including anti-diabetes, anti-osteoporosis, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, etc. Here, we systematically review the recent major studies on extraction and purification methods of polysaccharides from different parts (rhizome, seed, leaf, plumule, receptacle and stamen) of lotus, as well as the characterization of their chemical structure, biological activity and structure-activity relationship, and the applications of lotus polysaccharides in different fields. This article will give an updated and deeper understanding of lotus polysaccharides and provide theoretical basis for their further research and application in human health and manufacture development.

Abstract:Lotus Receptaculum Nelumbinis has been sparking wide research interests due to its rich phenolic compounds. In the present work, ultrasonic-assisted extraction coupled with glycerol was employed to extract phenolic compounds from Receptaculum Nelumbinis and the process was optimized using a response surface methodology with Box-Behnken design (BBD). The optimal conditions for the total phenolic content (TPC) extract were obtained: glycerol concentration of 40%, an extraction temperature of 66 °C, ultrasonic time of 44 min, and the solvent-to-solid ratio of 55 mL/g. Under these optimum extraction conditions, the extraction yield of TPC was 92.84 ± 2.13 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE) /g. Besides, the antioxidant activities demonstrated the ability of free radical scavenging by four different methods that included 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and reducing activity (RA) were 459.73 ± 7.07, 529.97 ± 7.30, 907.61 ± 20.28, and 983.66 ± 11.80 μmol TE/g, respectively. Six phenolic compounds were identified by ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography combined with triple-time-of-flight mass spectrophotometry (UPLC-Triple-TOF/MS) from the extracts. Meanwhile, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was conducted to identify the characteristic functional groups of the extracts and thus reflected the presence of polyphenols and flavonoids. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) illustrated the microstructure difference of four treatments, which might explain the relationships between antioxidant activities and the structures of phenolic compounds.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacologic relevance The leaves of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. are recorded in the earliest written documentation of traditional Chinese medicinal as "Ben Cao Gang Mu", a medicinal herb for blood clotting, dysentery and dizziness. Nuciferine, one of N. nucifera Gaertn. leaf extracts, has been shown to possess several pharmacological properties, including but not limited to ameliorating hyperlipidemia, stimulating insulin secretion, inducing vasodilation, reducing blood pressure, and demonstrating anti-arrhythmic properties. Aim of the study In light of the latest research findings on nuciferine, this article provides a comprehensive overview of its chemical properties, pharmacological activities, and the underlying regulatory mechanisms. It aims to serve as a dependable reference for further investigations into the pharmacological effects and mechanisms of nuciferine. Materials and Methods Use Google Scholar, Scifinder, PubMed, Springer, Elsevier, Wiley, Web of Science and other online database search to collect the literature on extraction, separation, structural analysis and pharmacological activity of nuciferine published before November 2023. The key words are "extraction", "isolation", "purification" and "pharmacological action" and "nuciferine". Results Nuciferine has been widely used in the treatment of ameliorating hyperlipidemia and lose weight, Nuciferine is a monomeric aporphine alkaloid extracted from the leaves of the plant Nymphaea caerulea and Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn. Nuciferine has pharmacological activities such as relaxing smooth muscles, improving hyperlipidemia, stimulating insulin secretion, vasodilation, inducing hypotension, antiarrhythmic effects, and antimicrobial and anti-HIV activities. These pharmacological properties lay a foundation for the treatment of tumors, inflammation, hyperglycemia, lipid-lowering and weight-loss , oxidative stress and other diseases with nuciferine. Conclusion Nuciferine has been clinically used to treat hyperlipidemia and aid in weight loss due to its effects on lipid levels, insulin secretion, vasodilation, blood pressure reduction, anti-tumor properties, and immune enhancement. However, other potential benefits of nuciferine have not yet been fully explored in clinical practice. Future research should delve deeper into its molecular structure, toxicity, side effects, and clinical pharmacology to uncover its full range of effects and pave the way for its safe and expanded clinical use.

Plumula Nelumbinis: A review of traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and safety

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Plumula Nelumbinis, the green embryo of the mature seeds of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn, has a medical history of over 400 years. It is widely used for clearing the heart and heat, calming the mind, and promoting astringent essence and hemostasis in traditional Chinese medicine. Moreover, it usually dual use as food and medicine. This review aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of Plumula Nelumbinis by summarizing its botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and safety. Methods: This review summarized published studies on Plumula Nelumbinis in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and literature databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Baidu Scholar, Wiley and China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database (CNKI), and limits the different research articles in botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and safety about Plumula Nelumbinis. Results: Plumula Nelumbinis is used to treat hypertension, arrhythmia, severe aplastic anemia, insomnia, encephalopathy and gynecological disease in traditional Chinese medicine and clinical studies. More than 130 chemicals have been isolated and identified from Plumula Nelumbinis, including alkaloids, flavonoids, polysaccharides and volatile oil. In addition, pharmacological effects, such as protective effects against cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases, lung and kidney injury, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities, were also evaluated by in vitro and in vivo studies. Moreover, the potential signaling pathways regulated by Plumula Nelumbinis in cardiovascular and neurological diseases and perspectives on Plumula Nelumbinis research were discussed. Conclusion: Plumula Nelumbinis, a commonly used Chinese medicine, has a variety of traditional and modern therapeutic uses. Some traditional uses, especially the treatment of cardiovascular and neurological diseases, have been verified by pharmacological investigation. However, the pharmacological molecular mechanisms, pharmacokinetics and toxicology of Plumula Nelumbinis are still incomplete. In the future, a series of systematic studies on active compounds identification, pharmacological mechanism clarification, quality and safety evaluation are necessary.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3>Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) is a water plant belonging to the family Nelumbonacea that is cultivated in many areas of the world, and it is mainly composed of petals, seeds, leaves, and roots. Among them, lotus leaves (also called "He-Ye") are used as both food and herbal medicine for health-promoting effects because of their multiple nutritional and phytochemical profiles.<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Scope and approach</h3>The aim of this review was to evaluate the scientific evidence for the health benefits of the Nelumbo nucifera leaves (NLEs) based on their pharmacokinetic properties. The nutritional properties of NLEs as well as the various applications in food products are presented.<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Key findings and conclusions</h3>NLEs and the essential components show good pharmacokinetic properties, such as wide tissue distribution characteristics. A large body of evidence has highlighted the promising health-promoting activities of Nelumbinis Folium, including anti-diabetes, anti-obesity, anti-neurotic, anti-inflammation, anti-cancer, liver protection, etc. Additionally, industrial applications of NLEs as a food and food ingredient in meat products, egg and dairy products, pasta dishes, beverages, fruit preservation, rice and meat zong, food packaging membranes, and health products have been discussed. However, its therapeutic effectiveness and applications remain uncertain; thus, more studies and long-term clinical trials are recommended to obtain in-depth insights into its physio-chemical mechanisms, safety, and bio-effects.

Evaluation of Functional Components of Plumula nelumbinis from Different Regions

Abstract:This research studied the contents of alkaloids, flavonoids, sterol as well as volatile oil from the Plumula nelumbinis of the five origins of Jian Ning, Guang Chang, Bao Ying, Hu Nan, Hong Hu. With ethanol as extraction solvent, we extracted physiologically active substances from Plumula nelumbinis powders by ultra-sonic extraction way, and measured with spectrophotometry. The highest content of alkaloids in Plumula nelumbinis was Guang Chang Lotus 7.18 mg/g. The highest content of flavonoids in Plumula nelumbinis was Hong Hu Lotus 14.28 mg/g. Extract by organic solvents, saponification, solid phase extraction, derivation, and nitrogen blow, and then detect the content of sterol in the Plumula nelumbinis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer. The highest content of sterol in Plumula nelumbinis was Bao Ying Lotus 0.40 mg/g, and the main kind of sterol wasβ-sitosterol. Extract the volatile oil by steam distillation, and detect it by Gas Chromatogra-phy-Mass Spectrometer. The highest content of volatile oil in Plumula nelumbinis was Hu Nan Lotus 0.60%. The content of linoleic acid and linoleic acid esters, palmitic acid and palmitic acid ester played a major part, and the content of phytol, phenols, and squalene accounted for a minor place.This article established the database and conducts functional evaluation of Plumula nelumbinis of different areas for further study of Plumula nelumbinis resource, by detecting the contents of alkaloids, flavonoids, sterols and volatile oil of Plumula nelumbinis in five origins. Guang Chang Plumula nelumbinis had a relative high functional ingredients, it is promising to develop and use Guang Chang Plumula nelumbinis resource.
Determination of Proanthocyanidins and Total Phenolics in the Seedpod of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn by Near Infrared Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To develop a method for rapid determination of proanthocyanidins and total phenolics in the seedpod of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn by near infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.METHODS Calibration models were established using PLS(partial least squares) method,while the contents of proanthocyanidins and total phenolics were measured by UV.RESULTS The range of 7 500-6 900 cm-1 of near infrared spectra was selected.Different spectra pretreatment methods were compared,and it was shown that second derivative pretreatment and Savitzky-Golay smoothing filter methods could extract spectra information thoroughly.The correlation coefficient(r) of proanthocyanidins was 0.962 1,SEC(standard deviation of the calibration sets) was 0.64,and SEP(standarddeviation of the prediction sets) was 0.94.The correlation coefficient(r) of total phenolics was 0.925 4,SEC was 0.97,and SEP was 1.26.CONCLUSION The near infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy method can be used to analyze the main active components in the seedpod of Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn rapidly,so it can be used routinely by the manufacturers for the quality control of the raw materials.
Pharmacokinetics of Nuciferine and N-Nornuciferine, Two Major Alkaloids From Nelumbo nucifera Leaves, in Rat Plasma and the Brain

Abstract:The leaf of the lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is a natural plant resource used as both food and herbal medicine (He-Ye) in China. Alkaloids are considered the major bioactive compound of the herb and exhibit various biological activities, including anti-hyperlipidemia, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hyperuricemic effects. Nuciferine (NF) and N-nuciferine (N-NF) are two major alkaloids found in the herb. In the present work, the plasma and brain pharmacokinetics of the two compounds were investigated after oral and intravenous (i.v.) administration of a lotus leaf alkaloid fraction to SD rats via ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detection and brain microdialysis. After oral administration (50 mg/kg), the two compounds NF and N-NF were rapidly absorbed into the blood and reached a mean maximum concentration (Cmax) of 1.71 μg/mL at 0.9 h and 0.57 μg/mL at 1.65 h, respectively. After i.v. administration (10 mg/kg), NF and N-NF were found to have a relatively wide volume of distribution (Vd, λz, 9.48 and 15.17 L/kg, respectively) and slow elimination half-life (t1/2, λz, 2.09 and 3.84 h, respectively). The oral bioavailability of NF and N-NF was estimated as 58.13% and 79.91%, respectively. After i.v. dosing (20 mg/kg), the two compounds rapidly crossed the blood-brain barrier and reached their Cmax (in unbound form): 0.32 and 0.16 μg/mL at 0.89 and 1.22 h, respectively. Both alkaloids had widespread distribution in the brain, with Vd, λz/F-values of 19.78 L/kg and 16.17 L/kg, respectively. The mean t1/2, λz values of NF and N-NF in the brain were 1.24 and 1.39 h, respectively. These results can help us to better understand the characteristics and neuro-pharmacological effects of the lotus alkaloid fraction.

Abstract:Studies of the alkaloids of Nelumbo nucifera began in the 19th century. Since Nelumbo nucifera alkali (nuciferine), Ogo the methyl nuciferine (O-nornuciferine) and Lin alkali (roemerine) had been found from Nelumbo nucifera, so far a number of alkaloid compounds have been isolated from Nelumbo nucifera. The Nelumbo nucifera alkaloids, based on the nucleus structure, are divided into three categories i.e., single benzyl isoquinoline, aporphine and dehydrogenase aporphine. Single benzyl isoquinoline e.g., armepavine, N-methylisococlaurine, N-methylcoclaurine. Structures of compounds are shown in Fig. 1 and Table-1.

Abstract:Abstract Lotus ( Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) commonly distributed in low-lying and flooded areas like Southern Vietnam provides flowers, leaves, seeds, embryos, and edible rhizomes. All parts of the plant show good pharmacokinetic properties, especially lotus embryos and leaves. Studies have shown that lotus plums and leaves have many bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, triterpenoids, and polyphenols, in which alkaloids are one of mainly bioactive compound kinds. So that, there are many studies investigating extraction methods that increase the amount of alkaloid from lotus leaves, embryos. There are some conventional extract methods such as soak, heat reflux, Soxhlet, etc... and some modern extract methods as microwave, ultrasounds, enzyme assisted, supercritical fluids (S-CO 2 ). At present, lotus leaves, embryos and their bioactivities can have application potential in the supplementary food such as protect-liver, anti-neurotic, etc.. The aim of this paper is to review a variety of develop methods used in the alkaloid extraction from lotus embryos, leaves. Besides, this study also introduces some pharmacokinetic properties of alkaloid which can use in functional foods.

Abstract:Lotus nelumbo (LN) (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) is an aquatic crop that is widely distributed throughout Asia and India, and various parts of this plant are edible and medicinal. It is noteworthy that different organs of this plant are used in traditional herbal medicine or folk recipes to cure different diseases and to relieve their corresponding symptoms. The compounds that are contained in each organ, which are named based on their chemical compositions, have led to their respective usages. In this work, a strategy was used to identify the difference ingredients and screen for Nuclear-factor-kappaB (NF-κB) inhibitors with anti-inflammatory ability in LN. Seventeen main difference ingredients were compared and identified from 64 samples of 4 different organs by ultra-performance liquid chromatography that was coupled with quadrupole/time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC/Q-TOF-MS) with principal component analysis (PCA). A luciferase reporter assay system combined with the UPLC/Q-TOF-MS information was applied to screen biologically active substances. Ten NF-κB inhibitors from Lotus plumule (LP) extracts, most of which were isoquinoline alkaloids or flavone C-glycosides, were screened. Heat map results showed that eight of these compounds were abundant in the LP. In conclusion, the LP extracts were considered to have the best anti-inflammatory ability of the four LN organs, and the chemical material basis (CMB) of this biological activity was successfully validated by multivariate statistical analysis and biological research methods.

Abstract:Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera), belonging to the family of Nelumbonaceae, is a beautiful aquatic perennial plant. It has been used as an ancient horticulture plant and famous agricultural crop for thousands of years. Modern phytochemical and pharmacological experiments have proved that polysaccharide is one of the most pivotal bioactive constituents of lotus. Hence, the systematic review covering the fundamental research advances and developing prospects of N. nucifera polysaccharides (NNPs) is an urgent demand to provide theoretical basis for their further research and application. The present review summarizes current emerging research progresses on the polysaccharides isolated from lotus, and it focuses on advanced extraction and purification methods, unique structural features, engaging biological activities, potential molecular mechanisms, as well as the relationship of structure and activity of NNPs. This review sheds light on the potential values of NNPs in affording functionally bioactive agents in food industry or therapeutically effective medicines for health care. In addition, this review will provide valuable insights for further commercial product development and promising industrial application of NNPs in both of the fundamental research communities and food or pharmaceutical industries in future.
