A cross-sectional study on populations of BZDs prescribed in community clinic

Abstract:Objective To investigate the current status of BZDs usage in community clinic and characteristics of users.Methods A cross-sectional study on BZDs usage was conducted in populations with insomnia and BZDs prescribed in community clinic during January to June 2012 with a self-design questionnaire,Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) and Goldberg anxiety and depression scales.Results Of 281 BZDs user,the first BZDs prescribed in community clinic was from doctors′ recommendation (35.2%),repeat prescriptions (64.8%).92.9% BZDs users were not followed by specialists.16.7% were for occasional or short-term use,33.8% for long-term intermittent use and 49.5% for long-term continued use which increased significantly in populations of aged>65 years (P<0.01) or AIS score ≥12 (P<0.01).There was a high prevalence of likely depression (65.5%) and likely anxiety (9.6%).The scores of depression and anxiety were both high significantly in populations of aged>65 years (P<0.01) and only depressive scores was high significantly in populations of AIS≥12 (P<0.01) or long-term consecutive use (P<0.01).Conclusions BZDs use was rarely in accordance with guidelines.Prevalence of likely depression and anxiety in BZDs user were high.These findings suggest that caution should be applied in prescribing BZDs populations.
