Clinical Comparative Study of Injectable Azithromycin and Cefuroxime in the Treatment of Lower Respiratory Tract Infection

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of domestic injectable azithromycin and cefuroxime in treating lower respiratory tract infection.Methods:A multicenter prospective single blind randomiszed controlled clinical study was performed comparing injectable azithromycin with cefuroxime in the treatment of 120 patients with lower respiratory infection. Sixty patients were treated with azithromycin and 60 with cefuroxime.Results:The overall efficacy rates of azithromycin and cefuroxime were 91.7% and 90.0%, bacteria elimination rates were 87.5% and 85.7%, adverse events were 6.6% and 3.3% respectively. No significant differences were noted between the two groups. All the adverse events were mild and disappeared after withdrawal of drug.Conclusions: The study shows that injectable azithromycin is well tolerated and effective in treating lower respiratory tract infection.
