Abstract:The traditional tolerance design model ignores the impact of noise factor, so that the design may be infeasible due to variations in design constraints. Based on the analysis of fuzzy factors in tolerance design and the limitations of the traditional Taguchi squared quality loss function, a fuzzy quality loss function model utilizing fuzzy theory was introduced. Concepts on fuzzy quality loss and fuzzy quality loss cost were proposed in the model. The characteristics of the new model and the advantages over the traditional Taguchi quality loss function were analyzed. A robust tolerance design model using a fuzzy quality loss function was proposed. An example was given to illustrate the proposed model. Results and comparisons show that the method is suitable and reliable, and makes the conclusions more objective and reasonable.

The concepts about fuzzy quality loss and fuzzy quality loss cost were proposed in the model. The results show that this method can reliably make conclusion on loss of fuzzy quality more objective and reasonable.

Abstract:Tolerance feasibility robust design is very important to improve the product quality.Presents a method for tolerance feasibility robust design based on tolerance feasibility robust model.The most probable point based importance sampling method is used to evaluate assembly yield for linear and non-linear functions.Therefore,the evaluation of tolerance feasibility robust design is realized.Finally,an example is given to illustrate the validity of the proposed model.The result shows that the method is reasonable.

Abstract:A new cost-tolerance model, which closely links with real technological process, is built using fuzzy neural networks. The influence of process factor on the manufacturing cost is analyzed and a fuzzy process factor is introduced using fuzzy mathematics principle. Then fuzzy neural network is applied to modeling of production cost-tolerance model. The inputs of the network are tolerance and fuzzy process factor and the output is manufacturing cost.

Abstract:The rise of artificial intelligence techniques provides new opportunities in the robust design and tolerancing fields. These technological growths require adapting new practices. In this paper, a new tolerance allocation approach based on supervised machine learning (decision tree) and Monte Carlo simulation is proposed. The most important branch of the decision tree which is generated based on the results of the Monte Carlo simulation, is analysed and the best tolerances to be allocated are defined in terms of quality/cost trade-off. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated and discussed through a non-linear problem: a Jansen linkage study.

Abstract:In the mechanical product design, tolerance specification is a crucial process to select tolerance types to control the geometrical variation of the features on a workpiece. Tolerance specification is a kind of decision-making process which needs to consider many influential factors of the manufacturing cost and quality requirement of a workpiece. In this context, those factors are classified into two categories, that of static factors from the rules and standards, and that of dynamic factors based on the manufacturing site’s information. This paper presents a novel method for computer-aided tolerance specification to evaluate both types of factors while the traditional methods only take the static factors into considerations. Those factors are assessed by the developed MADM (multiple attributes decision-making) algorithm, assisted with the rule-based algorithm and axiomatic design algorithm. A case study is undertaken, and its result shows the effect of dynamic factors on the output of tolerance specification. The results adhere to the ISO standard.

Abstract:The tolerance allocation optimization method by fuzzy-set weight-center evaluation is used to derive the manufacturing difficulty coefficient, through quantifying the manufacturing condition factors which all affect the manufacturing cost, including the forming means of the blank, element size, machining surface features, operator's skills, and material's machinability. The coefficient is then converted into a weight factor used in the inversed square model representing the relationship between the cost and tolerance, a cost-objective function model based on optimal tolerance allocation according to the manufacturing conditions is thus established for optimizing and allocating the tolerances. Integrating this model into computer-aided-tolerance-allocation makes it more convenient, accurate, and feasible.

Abstract:Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, puts forward new requirements for the sustainable service of products. With the recent advances in measurement technologies, global and local deformations in inaccessible areas can be monitored. Product usage data such as geometric deviation, position deviation, and angular deviation that lead to product functional performance degradation can be continuously collected during the product usage stage. These technologies provide opportunities to improve tolerance design by improving tolerance allocation using product usage data. The challenge lies in how to assess these deviations for identifying relevant field factors and reallocate the tolerance value. In this paper, a data-driven methodology based on the deviation for tolerance analysis is proposed to improve the tolerance allocation. A feature graph of a mechanical assembly is established based on the assembly relationship. The node representation in the feature graph is defined based on the unified Jacobian-torsor model and the node label is calculated by a synthetic evaluation method. A novel hierarchical graph attention networks (HGAT) is proposed to investigate hidden relations between nodes in the feature graph and calculate labels of all nodes. A modification necessity index (MNI) is defined for each tolerance between two nodes based on their labels. An identification of the to-be-modified tolerance method is proposed to specify the tolerance analysis target. A deviation difference matrix is constructed to calculate the MNI of each tolerance for identifying the to-be-modified tolerance value with high priorities for product improvement. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated through a case study for improving tolerance allocation of a press machine.
A Fuzzy Arithmetic And Dematel Integrated Method For Product Reliability Allocation In Early Design Stage

Abstract:Reliability allocation is important in the early product design stage. Conventional reliability allocation methods fall into two categories: crisp based and fuzzy based. For complex products that consist of multiple subsystems, target reliability is guaranteed by adopting effective techniques with which to allocate system reliability to subsystems. Fuzzy-based allocation approaches are suitable for complex products because they consider data insufficiency and imprecision. However, the majority of current fuzzy-based reliability allocation methods fail to attach importance to the correlations among different subsystems. This failure significantly affects product reliability allocation. To solve this problem, a reliability allocation method that integrates fuzzy arithmetic with decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) is proposed in this study. Based on the mutual correlations among subsystems, DEMATEL is employed to revise the initial weightages obtained via fuzzy arithmetic for reliability allocation. The proposed method is demonstrated by a case study of reliability allocation for a hydraulic support system in coal mining.

Abstract:Under the new geometric product specification (GPS), a two-dimensional chain cannot completely guarantee quality of the product. To optimize the allocation of three-dimensional tolerances in the conceptual design stage, the geometric variations of the tolerance zone to the deviation domain will be mapped in this paper. The deviation-processing cost, deviation-quality loss cost, and deviation-sensitivity cost function relationships combined with the tolerance zone described by the small displacement torsor theory are discussed. Then, synchronous constraint of the function structure and tolerance is realized. Finally, an improved bat algorithm is used to solve the established three-dimensional tolerance mathematical model. A case study in the optimization of three-part tolerance design is used to illustrate the proposed model and algorithms. The performance and advantage of the proposed method are discussed in the end.

Abstract:Fuzzy factors in CAD/CAPP concurrent tolerance design are analyzed. The result shows that fuzzy factors are of objectiveness and unavoidableness in concurrent tolerance. A new mathematical model was presented for design and manufacturing tolerance design. To solve this model, two steps are used. The first step is to transform the fuzzy optimal model to non-fuzzy optimal model by using a kind of membership function which can change the absolute limit boundary to a transitional one. The second step is to solve the non-fuzzy optimal model using Monte Carlo simulation method. An example is given to illustrate the proposed model.

Abstract:This paper presents a method for robust tolerance design in terms of Process Capability Indices (PCI). The component tolerance and the suitable manufacturing processes can be selected based on the real manufacturing context. The robustness of design feasibility under the effect of uncertainties is also discussed. A comparison between the results obtained by the proposed model and other methods indicates that robust and reliable tolerance can be obtained.

Abstract:With the development of precision manufacturing, the understanding of tolerance has become a research hotspot in the field of manufacturing. An adaptable design method for understanding tolerance in the precision stamping process is proposed in this study. First, fluctuations of tolerance which are caused by differences in the stamping process are analyzed, such as differences in material and thickness, which can lead to changes in the metal flow stress curve. Second, a condition-driven adaptive design method is constructed based on a monitoring system and hydraulic control system. The mapping rules between multiple disturbance factors and the execution strategy are established by the hidden Markov model algorithm. Third, executive parameters, such as velocity, pressure, and gaps, are calculated and optimized by the data statistics of partial tolerance fluctuations in the control module. Then disturbances of various conditions could be adaptively controlled timely and effectively by the executive parameters. Finally, the adaptive design method for tolerance of one precision stamping part is applied, and the effect of the application is proved by the optimized results.

Abstract:To assure feasibility and economy of mechanical product design, tolerance design should be incorporated into conceptual structure design phase. The completion of the evolving procedures from functional requirement to tolerance scheme resolution in the early stage, greatly promotes selection of structure scheme and optimization of cost. The paper provides a concurrent design methodology for functional tolerance using the principle of decomposition and reconstitution using growth design based on functional surfaces. A concurrent design methodology is given, including growth design-supported structure-tolerance design process, assembly information model and TTRS-based tolerance representation model. A recursive design method for function to structure mapping is proposed, and the tolerance design in every step of the iteration is focused on. Geometric variation model is introduced to infer key parts and key features, helping forming tolerance specification while assuring rationality and sufficiency of structure decomposition. In the whole process, structure and tolerance are constrained to each other and an optimization framework is put forward.

Abstract:In most cases, designers must manually specify geometric tolerance types and values when designing mechanical products. For the same nominal geometry, different designers may specify different types and values of geometric tolerances. To reduce the uncertainty and realize the tolerance specification automatically, a tolerance specification method based on machine learning is proposed. The innovation of this paper is to find out the information that affects geometric tolerances selection and use machine learning methods to generate tolerance specifications. The realization of tolerance specifications is changed from rule-driven to data-driven. In this paper, feature engineering is performed on the data for the application scenarios of tolerance specifications, which improves the performance of the machine learning model. This approach firstly considers the past tolerance specification schemes as cases and sets up the cases to the tolerance specification database which contains information such as datum reference frame, positional relationship, spatial relationship, and product cost. Then perform feature engineering on the data and established machine learning algorithm to convert the tolerance specification problem into an optimization problem. Finally, a gear reducer as a case study is given to verify the method. The results are evaluated with three different machine learning evaluation indicators and made a comparison with the tolerance specification method in the industry. The final results show that the machine learning algorithm can automatically generate tolerance specifications, and after feature engineering, the accuracy of the tolerance specification results is improved.

Abstract:Robust design is less sensitive to the manufacturing variation and its demand for controlling the manufacturing variation can be reduced. The existing robust design techniques are limited to solve individual synthesis problems, and these methods seldom consider the problem of tolerance sensitivity. This paper presents a method for tolerance sensitivity design and evaluation. First, tolerance sensitivity robustness is analyzed and the tolerance sensitivity robust design models are developed. Then, the matrix analysis method is introduced to evaluate complex assembly relationship among design functions and parameters. The results show that compared with origional mothod, the proposed method is siutble and reliable.

Abstract:Consideration of form errors involves real machining features in tolerance modeling but increases uncertainties in functional requirement estimation, when tackling the trade-off between the cost and precision performance. In this paper, a statistical tolerance allocation method is presented to solve this problem. First of all, a top-down stepwise designing procedure is designed for complex products, and a combination of Jacobian matrix and Skin Model Shapes is applied in modeling the mechanical joints. Then, rigid assembly simulations of point-based surfaces are further advanced to provide an accurate estimation of the assembly state, through considering physical constraints and termination conditions. A mini-batch gradient descent method and a backtracking strategy are also proposed to promote computational efficiency. Finally, a deep Q-network is implemented in optimal computation after characterizing the systematic state, action domain, and reward function. The general tolerance scheme is then achieved using the trained Q-network. The results of 6 experiments each with 200 samples show the proposed method is capable of assessing tolerance schemes with 35.2% and 47.2% lower manufacturing costs and 16.7% and 28.3% higher precision maintenance on average than conventional particle swarm optimization and Monte Carlo method respectively.

Abstract:Conceptual design is a pivotal stage of new product development in manufacturing industries. Since multiple design alternatives are put forward at this stage, developing advanced evaluation methods is of great importance. Existing methods adopt additive models to integrate evaluation data. They face some inconsistency issues, e.g. inconsistency in the independent assumption and interdependent data, since evaluation criteria are interactional. Fuzzy measure that replaces the additivity with monotonicity has enabled advances in addressing such issues. This work proposes a two-additive fuzzy measure-based information integration approach to product design alternative evaluation for the first time. The evaluation data given by experts are in the form of intuitionistic linguistic numbers. They are more in accordance with the thinking habits of experts because the hesitation degree in linguistic assessment can be revealed. In order to reduce the subjective bias, the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method combining with grey relational analysis is applied to adjust evaluation data. Then monotonous two-additive fuzzy measure is identified by nonlinear programming using these data. It makes a good trade-off between computational complexity and presentation capability. Hence, evaluation data can be integrated by non-additive Choquet integral for ranking design alternatives. In comparison to additive model-based methods, the extra effect on the simultaneous satisfaction of criteria can be effectively revealed by the proposed approach. And the robustness of it is demonstrated by the sensitivity analysis. A case study on an elevator's design alternative evaluation is conducted to illustrate the feasibility and practicability of the proposed approach.
