The Impairment Groups Analysis: Report of 1358 Rehabilitation Inpatients

Abstract:[Objective] To summarize the work of American rehabilitation department and that of ours, so as to improve the quality of rehabilitation therapy. [Methods] The chief diagnosis of 1358 patients discharged from our rehabilitation department during four calendar years from 1998 to 2001 were analyzed, and compared with the data describing the first admissions for rehabiliation in 1996, 1997 and 1998, which was aggregated from the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR) in the USA. [Results] The average age of the 1358 patients was 55. 5 yr, the greatest percentage of patients for the age categories was 60 yr and older. Fifty percent were males, and other 50% were females. The average age of the UDSMR was 68 yr, the percentage of 65 yr or older patients was 70 % . Two impairment groups with the largest numbers of patients were orthopedic conditions and stroke, which were similar to that of the UDSMR. [Conclusion] First, more attention should be paid to the rehabilitation and prevention of gerontology. Second, the rehabilitation and prevention of orthopedic conditions and stroke is the focus in rehabilitation department. Third, establishing a data system in China, like the UDSMR, is helpful for the development of rehabilitation medicine and preventive medicine.
