Abstract:At the end of Eocene, Himalayan Movement led to extensive lateral compression and vertical uplift in the Keping-Bachu area, and this resulted in exposure of Lower-Middle Ordovician paleokarst, offering an excellent opportunity to study the outcrops of paleokarst reservoirs. The Xekar profile in the Tarim basin was selected as objective in order to better understand the characteristics and evolution process of paleokarst reservoirs formed in high-rainfall tropic climate. The study shows that carbonates with different textures have different responses to karst. The Yijianfang Formation, which consists of reel and beach, forms laminar reservoir structure, in which vugs and small caves are well developed; while the Yingshan Formation containing micrite and calcarenite is heterogenetic fracture-cavity reservoirs, in which big dominant fractures resulted from karstification. Hypogenic caves resulting from hydrotherm have also been found in the study area, but small in both amount and scale. Therefore paleokarst, along with cave systems, is the key factor for reservoir prediction.
