Effects of statins on proliferation,migration and apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells and its mechanism

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease,in particular coronary heart disease(CHD),is one of the principal causes of mortality.Atherosclerosis is considered as the main cause of the coronary artery disease.Clinical trials have demonstrated that statins are beneficial in the primary and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease,through inhibition of lipid deposit on the arterial vascular wall and abnormal proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells(VSMCs).Recent studies indicate that some of the cholesterol-independent or "pleiotropic" effects of statins are involved in decreasing inflammation,inhibiting the platelet accumulation,inhibiting proliferation and migration of VSMCs, enhancing cell apoptosis and improving endothelial function.The article is focused on the effects and mechanism of statins on the proliferation,migration and apoptosis of VSMCs.
