Abstract:Grassland-livestock balance is necessary for the sustainable development of Tibetan grasslands and efficient production of animal husbandry. To alleviate the enormous pressure caused by excessive grazing on natural grasslands and provide an effective way to solve the contradiction between livestock and grass availability, a the field experiment was conducted to select oat varieties that are suitable for cultivation in the Shigatse region of Tibet based on the analysis of dry weight, plant height, leaf-stem ratio, ear length, panicle weight, thousand-seed weight, and nutritional quality of the eight oat varieties; crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), crude ash (Ash), acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), and lignin (ADL) were also considered. The production performance results showed that the highest yield of Qingyin No.1 was 12 406.95 kg·hm–2, the ear length of Qingyin No.3 was 25.60 cm, and the highest Qingyin No.3 was 159 cm. The nutritional quality results showed that the highest CP content was for Qingyin No. 2 and was 6.4%, the lowest ADF content was for Qingyan No. 1 and was 28.55%. The NDF content of Lean was the lowest (52%), the highest EE content was for Qingyin No. 1 and was 52.7%, the highest Ash content was for Qingyan No. 1 and was 4.97%, and the lowest ADL content was for Qingyin No. 2 and was 24.18%. According to grey relational analysis of yields and nutritional quality, it was concluded that Qingyin No. 1, Qingyin No. 3, and Qingyin No. 2 are more advantageous in the Shigatse region of Tibet, and they are suitable for planting in this region.

Abstract:Eight alfalfa varieties of Vector, AmeriGraze 401, WL323, Golden Empress, Ameri Stand201, Algonquin, NingMU No.l and Jinnan were identified on growth period and production through 2 year (2001～2002) in Taiyuan. The results showed: Vector, AmeriGraze401, WL323 and Golden Empress,which are the fall-dormancy levels of 3 and 4,had a high yield and strong regeneration, which were favorable in planting on large scale in this area.

Abstract:30 semi-dormancy or none-dormancy alfalfa varieties were collected and evaluated in the as-pects of qualities and agronomic characters for vegetable use to find out good varieties for vegetable use in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze river.The 30 alfalfa varieties were planted in autumn,and harves-ted 3 times in the April of next year.According to accumulating biomass,accumulating plant height and stem/leaf ratio of regeneration seedlings of alfalfa in the three harvests,the 30 alfalfa varieties were divid-ed into four groups.The accumulated plant height and biomass of alfalfa in group 1 and 2 were relatively low,and they were not valuable as vegetable use.17 alfalfa varieties in group 3 and group 4 were evaluated comprehensively base on above-ground biomass,plant height,stem diameter,regeneration,stem crisp, as well as crude protein content and acid detergent fiber content.Three alfalfa varieties,including WL656, GTBR PLUS and Fengye721,were selected,which were greatly valuable for vegetable use,and had good characters of strong regeneration ability,high yield and nutritional value,and good taste.

Abstract:Taking eight fresh broad beans Cixi Dabaican,Sucan No.2,Japanese Dabaipi,Lingxi Yicun,Haimen Daqingpi,Shangyu Tianjiqing,American Horsebean,Tongxian No.6,and an independent developed new line long pod broad bean,as experimental materials to study the growing period,agronomic character and fresh yield under the cultivation condition of greenhouse.The results indicated that the long pod broad bean performed the best in terms of pod and grain yield,followed by Japanese Dabaipi,while the comprehensive character of Shangyu Tianjiqing was the worst.

Abstract:A comparison experiment of several commercial varieties for summer-autumn rearing in Zhejiang Province was carried out in the present paper. The results showed that the combination 871×872 was relatively high in cocoon and silk quantity and quality characters but lower in fluoride tolerance, therefore, it was considered to be more suitable for distributing in the areas with light fluoride pollution. The combination Xia7×Xia6 was stronger in constitution, good in economic characters and relatively higher in fluorine tolerance. It might be the best one in comprehensive characters for summer-autumn rearing in the countryside of Zhejiang Province.
A comparative test of new,fresh-eating and glutinous corn varieties

Abstract:In our study,a comparative test of 11 new,fresh-eating and glutinous corn varieties was carried out with"Suyunuo No.5 "as control.The results showed that the yield of "Heinuo270","Xiameinuo No.1","Tianxiangcaiyu "and"Gengyunbainuo"were significantly higher than control variety.These varieties had good characters and could be further extended at reasonable scale.

Abstract:The objective of this research is to explore the genetic diversity of alfalfa germplasm resources by morphological traits,agronomic traits,quality traits and to provide basis for variety improvement and parent choice.Total of 21 traits were investigated on 75 alfalfa accessions which were collected from different geographical areas.The 21 traits were analyzed by principal component analysis and cluster analysis.The results showed that there were extensive variations in morphological traits,agronomic traits,and quality traits in different alfalfa accessions.The most significant variance was agronomic traits,followed by morphological traits and quality traits.Principal component analysis showed that the additive contributing rate of first eight principal components was 82.7748％,four major discriminating characteristics were selected to reflect the comprehensive agronomic characters.Stem dry weight,leaf dry weight,plant fresh weight and plant dry weight were the main factors which produced morphological variation of 75 wild alfalfa accessions.Based on the 21 indexes,cluster analysis showed that all 75 accessions of alfalfa were divided into 5 groups.The No.3 of the second group and No.25,No.31 accessions of the first group had better agronomic traits compared to others,which could be excellent parent materials for the breeding and improvement of Medicago sativa L.

Abstract:By comparing nine fresh broad bean cultivars,Sucan No.2,Haimen Daqingpi,Shangyu Tianjiqing, American Horsebean,Lingxi Yicun,Tongxian No.6,Japanese Dabaipi,Cixi Dabaican,independent developed new line(long pod broad bean),as experimental materials to conduct low temperature preservation test. The results indicated that:in terms of pod storage,Shangyu Tianjiqing kept the best preservation effect,Cixi Dabaican,Japanese Dabaipi and long pod broad bean took the second place under the storage conditions of 2℃ and 28 days;in terms of peeled-bean storage,Japanese Dabaipi and Cixi Dabaican preserved the best under the storage conditions of 2℃ and 21 days.

Abstract:Drought is a major stress factor for agricultural production including alfalfa production. One way to counterbalance the yield losses is the introgression of drought tolerant germplasm into breeding programs. As an effort to exploit such germplasm, 16 individual plants were selected from the Southeastern Turkey from their natural habitat and clonally propagated in field trials with an ultimate goal to use the germplasm as parents for releasing a synthetic cultivar. Forage yield and forage quality traits were evaluated and molecular genetic diversity among genotypes were determined using inter simple sequence repeat markers. Genotypes showed a variation from growth habit to yield and quality traits indicating sufficient phenotypic variation for diverse breeding efforts (for grazing or harvesting) and long term selection schemes. A large amount of genetic variation was observed even with a limited number of marker and genotypes. However, no pattern of spatial genetic structure was observed for the scale of the study when genetic variation is linked to the geographic origin. We conclude that ex situ natural variation provides a wealth of germplasm that could be incorporated into breeding programs aiming to improve drought tolerance. We also suggest an extensive collection of seeds/plant tissue from unique plants with desirable traits rather than putting more efforts to create a spatial germplasm sampling efforts in narrow regions.

Abstract:Alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.), an important perennial legume forage crop with high nutritional value and forage yield, is widely used in animal husbandry. However, it is very sensitive to aluminum, which severely limits its growth in acidic soils. In this study, we analyzed the genotype variation of each agronomic trait in 44 alfalfa varieties in two acidic soil environments. Then, analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the variance components was performed using the Residual Maximum Likelihood (REML). The best linear unbiased predictor analysis was used to obtain the mean trait of each variety, and the mean values were used to construct the mean matrix of varieties × traits and interaction analysis of varieties × years. The results showed that there was significant ( P < 0.05) genotypic variation for each trait of the 44 varieties and the genetic diversity was abundant. The average repeatability ( R value) of interannual plant height (PH), stem thickness (ST), number of branches (NS), fresh weight (FW), total fresh weight (TFW), and total dry weight (TDW) was high (0.21–0.34), whereas the genetics were relatively stable. PH, NS, FW, TFW, and dry weight (DW) were positively correlated ( P < 0.01) with TDW. Six alfalfa varieties (Algonquin, Xinjiang daye, Trifecta, Vernal, WL354HQ, and Boja) with excellent TDW and TFW were identified in different years, environmental regions, and climatic altitudes. Our research results can provide suggestions and critical information regarding the future improvement and development of new alfalfa strains and varieties that are resistant to acidic soil conditions.
Effects of Mixed Planting on Yield and Feed Value of Silage Corn

Abstract:Because of the cold climate and short frost-free growing season in the north region of Heilongjiang province,most silage corn varieties show a low maturing degree(without corn ear) and high water content which impact the feed value of corn silage.Although few early-maturing corn varieties have been planted in that region,they performed with small plant and low biomass.Mixed planting of corn varieties with different phenophases is believed to increase not only the fresh yield but also the kernel production and water-soluble carbohydrate,and furthermore improve the lactic acid fermentation and the silage quality.The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of intercropping and mixture planting of 3 corn varieties on the phenophase,agronomic traits,yield,and feed value of silage corn.The results indicate that the mixed planting had no significant effect on phenophase and main agronomic traits and intercropping and mixture planting increased total dry matter yield and feed value.The sequence of quality and yield of 5 planting methods evaluated comprehensively by Milk2006 index was as follows: intercropping mixture planting Zea mays L.cv.Haiyu No.8 Zea mays L.cv.Zhongyuandan No.32 Zea mays L.cv.Dongqing No.1.

Evaluation of forage grass varieties introduced from USA for their adaptation in Zhejiang

Abstract:Five forage grass species, 24 varieties in total, Which introduced from USA were evaluated for their adaptation in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, from October 1997 to June 1999. Annual ryegrass showed both high forage yield and good nutritive value in winter sowlng. Perennial ryegrass and tall festuea had good heat tolerance, aftermath growth and persistence. Cocksfoot was adapted to the environmental conditions, but relatively low in forage yield. Bromegrass was heat sensitive and should be utilized by winter sowing. Annual ryegrass cv. Surrey and perennial ryegrass cv. Bison were recommended as the most promising varieties for winter sowing and permanent pasture establishing, respectively.

Abstract:AbstrcatThis experiment compared phonological period, growth rate, fresh grass yield, and nutrition component of newly introduced ryegrass varieties (Dongmu-70,Lolium perenne L.,Precocious dualploid ryegrass, Italy tetraploid ryegrass) with local Lolium sp.in Jinqu basin. The results showed that Dongmu-70 had higher yield of fresh grass and protein content than did Lolium sp.precocious dualploid ryegrass and Italy tetraploid ryegrass had longer growth periods and elongated utilization period for approximately one month. Apart from the higher nutrition component,Lolium perenne L. had no obvious advantages in the phonological period and growth rate.

Abstract:Alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) is one of the most important perennial forage legumes with high nutritional quality. Four alfalfa cultivars were sown in randomized block design with four replications to evaluate their dry matter yield and nutritional quality under rain-fed conditions during 2016–2017 at Masha, southwest Ethiopia. Percentage of plot cover, plant height, leaf to stem ratio, dry matter yield, crude protein yield, and dry matter (DM), ash, crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and acid detergent lignin (ADL) were measured. The combined analysis revealed that days to 50% flowering were significantly (P 0.05) due to cultivar differences. It could be concluded that, of the tested cultivars, Hairy Peruvian is an appropriate cultivar for biomass production potential under rain-fed conditions for sub-humid areas of southwest Ethiopia.

Abstract:The article presents the results of stress resistance of alfalfa varieties and variety samples of growing on the territory of three countries. The research is related to the subject of the international project "GS19001 - Use of wild related crops for breeding drought-resistant alfalfa and its distribution among subsistence farmers in Kazakhstan, China and Chile". The lack of moisture during the period of growth and development of plants has significantly affected the yield of fodder crops. Drought also has a significant impact on the economic and environmental situation in the countries. Climate change in this direction has brought this problem to the fore. Thus, the studies have focused on the drought resistance of alfalfa samples. The research was conducted in LLP "Kokshetau Experimental Production Farm" (Shagalaly rural area), located in the northern part of the hilly and plain zone of Akmola region in Zerenda district of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The soils of the experimental plot are common chernozems, in terms of mechanical composition they are slightly stony heavy loam, the reserves of labile forms of phosphorus are estimated as low, and high of potassium. Field methods of estimation were applied in selection for drought resistance. The drought resistance was determined during the period of maximum drought, i. e. visual evaluation by the number of green leaves given in percentage. Promising samples for drought resistance such as K 271, Forse 5, Zhangcao, DT 1 were established. The determined drought resistant varieties will be used as resource material for selecting fodder crops.
Difference in Response to Aluminum Stress among Tibetan Wild Barley Genotypes

Abstract:Wild barley (Hordeum sp.) germplasm is rich in genetic diversity and provides a treasure trove of useful genes for crop improvement. We carried out a comprehensive program combining short-term hydroponic screening via hematoxylin-staining of root-regrowth procedure and filter paperbased evaluation of diverse germplasm in response to Al/acid stress using 105 annual Tibetan wild barley and 45 cultivated barley genotypes. Root elongation among the 105 Tibetan wild barley genotypes varied significantly after Al exposure, ranging from 62.9% to 80.0% in variation coefficients and 4.35 to 4.45 in diversity index. These genotypic differences in Al resistance were fairly consistent in both the hydroponic and filter paperbased evaluations: XZ16, XZ166, and XZ113 were selected as Al-resistant genotypes, and XZ61, XZ45, and XZ98 as Al-sensitive wild genotypes. Furthermore, significantly lower Al concentrations in roots and shoots were detected in the three selected Al-resistant genotypes than in the three sensitive genotypes in the filter paperbased experiment. Meanwhile, XZ16 was the least affected by Al toxicity in regard to reduced SPAD value (chlorophyll meter readings), plant height, root length, dry biomass, tillers per plant, and chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) in the long-term hydroponic experiment compared with the Al-resistant cultivated barley cv. Dayton, while XZ61 had the severest stress symptoms.

Abstract:Volatile components are one key factor in sample identification, differential analysis, quality control and origin traceability. In order to identify and analyze the differences in volatile substances in different alfalfa seeds, this study used gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), combined with the Gallery Plot plug-in, and PCA, PLS-DA and other analysis methods. In this way, a comprehensive analysis of volatile components in 10 alfalfa seeds, including aerospace varieties, was conducted. A comparative analysis of the characteristics of different sample compounds using topographic maps and fingerprints led to isolation of 48 kinds of 54 volatile compounds. Among them, esters (9 types), olefins (8 types), ketones (8 types), alcohols (6 types) and aldehydes (6 types) were found to be the most abundant volatile compounds in alfalfa seeds. At the same time, PCA and PLS-DA analysis models showed that esters, ketones and alcohols were the main volatiles causing the differences among alfalfa seeds. Among them, the content of various substances in the ZT2 and ZT3 aerospace varieties were higher than that of other varieties, while the types and contents of volatiles in ZT1, ZM2 and GN3 were relatively low. Therefore, in combination with the differences in maturity of each sample, the 10 varieties of alfalfa were finally divided into three categories, and the varieties of the same series were basically classified into one category. This provides a basis and convenience for future seed screening, identification, traceability and forage breeding.

Abstract:The present experiment has been conducted to screen some new corn varieties with high yield and resistance suitable for planting in Xincheng county of Guangxi.A comparative test of corn varieties was undertaken in Panshui village,Chengguan town,Xincheng county in 2009.The varieties Zhengda 999,Ruiheng 269,Dika 008,Taipingyang 98 and Nanxiao 201 showed strong growth vigor,high yield and strong resistance to disease,insect and abiotic.These varieties were found suitable for planting widely in Xincheng county.Varieties Ruiheng 666 and Yumeitou 168 performed normally in the field,the increase in yield was not significant as compared to control variety Dika 007.The two varieties affected severely by rice sheath blight disease,and need to be investigated further.Variety Dongdan 80 showed low yield and lesser resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses,and variety Lucheng 133 was characterized by short ear length and low yield,both of these varieties were not suitable for planting in Xincheng county.
