Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate ultrahigh range resolution based on photonically generated linear frequency modulated (LFM) terahertz (THz) pulses. By synthesizing dual-band pulses in 315-360 GHz, a THz LFM signal with 40 GHz bandwidth and a time-bandwidth product (TBWP) of 336 is achieved, which successfully enables a range resolution as high as 3.9 mm over more than 4 m in multi-target ranging.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of optical pulse compression reflectometry (OPCR) based on double sideband modulation (DSBM). Owing to the use of DSBM in the novel scheme, the cost-effectiveness and the stability of the OPCR are essentially enhanced. The working principle and the theoretical analysis are demonstrated. Experiment is conducted to verify that the performance of the DSBM-based OPCR is comparable with that based on single sideband modulation. Large measurement range over 58 km with high spatial resolution of 10 cm is experimentally achieved.

Abstract:Rayleigh scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors with long sensing distance and large dynamic range are highly desired for application scenarios such as vehicle tracking, structure health monitoring, and geological survey. To enlarge the dynamic range, we propose a coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR) based on double-sideband linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse. By utilizing I/Q demodulation, both the positive and negative frequency band of the Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signal can be properly demodulated. Consequently, the dynamic range is doubled without increasing the bandwidth of signal generator, photodetector (PD), and oscilloscope. In the experiment, the chirped pulse with 10 μs pulse width and 498 MHz frequency sweeping range is launched into the sensing fiber. Single-shot strain measurement is achieved over 5 km single-mode fiber with a spatial resolution of 2.5 m and a strain sensitivity of 7.5 pε/<i>H</i> <i>z</i>. A vibration signal with 3.09 με peak-to-peak amplitude (corresponding to 461 MHz frequency shift) is successfully measured with the double-sideband spectrum, which cannot be properly recovered with the single-sideband spectrum.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to generate a linear frequency-modulated optical pulse with high extinction ratio based on an electrical frequency-modulated pulse and optical single-sideband modulator. This scheme is proved to improve the stability and accuracy of optical pulse compression reflectometry (OPCR). In the experiment, a high spatial resolution of 10cm and a long measurement range of 10.8km using a laser source with 2-km coherence length are demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultrahigh-resolution optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) system by using a mode-locked laser as the pulse source and a linear optical sampling technique to detect the reflected signals. Taking advantage of the ultrashort input pulse, the large detection-bandwidth, as well as the low timing jitter of linear optical sampling system, a sub-mm spatial resolution is achieved. As the pulse-width is broadened with the increase of distance due to chromatic dispersion and large bandwidth of the ultrashort pulse, by adopting digital chromatic dispersion compensation, we achieved a spatial resolution of 340 μm when measuring the reflector at 10 km. This technique helps OTDR find new foreground in long-range and ultrahigh-resolution distributed applications such as remote optical identification device detection for diagnosing passive optical network links, or precisely detecting fault positions in aircrafts.

Abstract:Pulse compression technique is a particularly competitive method that enables both high spatial resolution and dynamic range in coherent radar and distributed fiber sensing systems. Up to now, the frequency bandwidths of most pulse compression techniques are restricted to tens of GHz. In this paper, we propose an all-optic sub-THz-range linearly chirped optical source and a large-bandwidth detection system to characterize it. Taking advantage of the chromatic dispersion effect, ultrashort optical pulses are stretched to be ~10 ns linearly chirped pulses with sub-THz range, which yields a large time-bandwidth product of 4500, a high compression ratio of 4167 and a chirp rate of 45 GHz/ns. The generated waveform is characterized with high precision thanks to the large detection bandwidth of linear optical sampling technique. A spatial resolution of 120 μm and an extinction ratio of 20.4 dB is demonstrated by using this technique, which paves the way for ultra-high spatial resolution and long range sensing applications such as LIDAR and optical reflectometry.

Abstract:We newly develop a temporal gating scheme to enlarge the measurement range of Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR) for a fiber-optic distributed strain measurement. In this scheme, the trade-off problem between the measurement range and the spatial resolution can be dissolved. 66-cm spatial resolution and 1-km measurement range were simultaneously obtained with 50-Hz sampling rate.

Abstract:A novel time-gated digital optical frequency domain reflectometry (TGD-OFDR) technique with high spatial resolution over long measurement range is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To solve the contradictory between the tuning rate of lightwave frequency, which determines the spatial resolution, and the measurable distance range in traditional OFDR, our proposed scheme sweeps the frequency of probe beam only within a time window, while the local reference remains a frequency-stable continuous lightwave. The frequency-to-distance mapping is digitally realized with equivalent references in data domain. In demonstrational experiments, a 1.6-m spatial resolution is obtained over an entire 110-km long fiber link, proving that the phase noises of the laser source as well as environmental perturbations are well suppressed. Meanwhile, the dynamic range was 26 dB with an average of only 373 measurements. The proposed reflectometry provides a simple-structure and high-performance solution for the applications where both high spatial resolution and long distance range are required.

Abstract:A phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry with 175km sensing range is demonstrated using the combination of co-pumping 2nd-order Raman amplification based on random fiber lasing, counter-pumping 1st-order Raman amplification, and counter-pumping Brillouin amplification. With elaborate arrangements, each pumping scheme is responsible for the signal amplification in one particular segment of the all three. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that distributed vibration sensing is performed over such a long distance without inserting repeaters. The novel hybrid amplification scheme demonstrated in this work can also be incorporated in other fiber-optic sensing systems for extension of sensing distance.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel reflectometry based on the frequency modulation pulse-compression technology, called optical pulse compression reflectometry (OPCR). Linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse is taken as an example to implement the OPCR. Its working principle and theoretical analysis are demonstrated. The spatial resolution is determined by the sweeping range of the LFM rather than the pulse width, which overcomes the tradeoff between spatial resolution and measurement range in the conventional pulse-based optical time domain reflectometry. The influence of the laser's phase noise on the integrated side lobe ratio and peak side lobe ratio is theoretically studied. Thanks to the continuous acquisition nature of the OPCR, time averaging is valid to eliminate the influence and results in the measurement range of the OPCR beyond a few times of the source coherent length. A proof-of-concept experiment of the OPCR is carried out to verify the spatial resolution and measurement range. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this invited talk, three advanced methods to improve both the spatial resolution and the measurement range are presented which paves the way for new horizons in high-end applications. The first one is to develop an optical source with ultra-highly-linear frequency sweeping rate, and use it for optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). The second one is to use linear optical sampling (LOS) technique to measure ultra-short pulse used for optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) and adopt dispersion compensation scheme. The third one is to use LOS technique for characterizing the ultra-wide linearly chirped signals for pulse compression.

Abstract:We have previously demonstrated a photonic time-stretched coherent radar (PTS-CR) with central-frequency programmable and bandwidth-tailorable agility. The sampling bandwidth in the reception was essentially compressed by the photonic time-stretched process. However, in the PTS-CR, the reception aperture suffering dead zone was hardly tuned by the fiber delay line and the measurement range was restricted by the pulse repetition rate (PRR) of the mode-locked laser. Here, we report a novel scheme to overcome the restrictions. The reception aperture can be simply tuned by adjusting the center wavelength of an optical filter and the PRR is reduced for enlargement of the measurement range by use of a photonic switch in the transmitter. In the experiment, a tenfold enlargement of measurement range is demonstrated to identify two neighboring targets separated by similar to 4 cm.

Abstract:Highly sensitive reflectometry over 20 km with a sub-meter spatial resolution based on phase noise compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry and the concatenative reference method is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A fiber laser is used as a light source to extend he measurement range although the distance remains limited to the laser coherence length because of the existence of laser phase noise. To reduce the influence of laser phase noise, the measurement signal is compensated using reference signals generated from a single auxiliary interferometer supported by a newly developed compensation process. By using the proposed technique, the measurement range is extended to 20 km with a sub-meter resolution and a sensitivity (relative to the Rayleigh backscattering level) of about -30 dB, which is nearly impossible to realize with the OTDR technique. The entire measurement time is 20 ms and the processing time is 20 s for each section.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an ultrahigh resolution terahertz (THz) range sensing system by digitally synthesizing multiple-hand linear frequency-modulated (LFM) pulses. In the experiment, two-band LFM pulses with 20-GHz bandwidth in the THz band are photonically generated based on frequency-to-time mapping, resulting in a synthetic LFM signal with 40-GHz bandwidth operating within the 315-360 GHz. As a benefit, a range resolution as high as 3.9 mm over more than 2 m is successfully achieved in multi-target ranging. The proposed technology not only releases the requirements for instantaneous bandwidth and sampling rate but also breaks the bandwidth limitation of THz receiver in enabling ultrahigh resolution in the THz region.

Abstract:A method is proposed and demonstrated to improve a diffraction grating displacement sensor to simultaneously achieve nanometer-level resolution and an extended range of operation. The method exploits the polarization phase-shifting optical path to extract two sinusoidal signals with a quadrature phase shift. The interpolation circuit is applied to nonlinearly convert two sinusoidal signals into a standard incremental AB quadrature digital signal, implementing an extended operation range with the magnitude of a laser coherence length. This work enables displacement measurement operated at large-scale range, and provides a significant guide for the design of a high performance micro-displacement sensor.
