Aquí, se elabora una interpretación personal de esta obra, sustentada en el análisis de materiales originales, que pone en valor las relaciones visuales vinculadas a la topografía. The term neatly summarizes the idea that streets can be safe places for people of all ages and abilities, whether on foot, on bikes, in wheelchairs, or in buses, cars, or streetcars. The idea has taken hold in hundreds of U.S. communities, providing lessons for those considering adopting a complete streets policy. Crafting an ordinance or resolution has the potential to crystalize a community's vision for their streets and provide a guide to implementation.

Abstract:Why does everyone think cities can save the planet? Contemporary planning interventions promise salvation via spatial fixes that might reduce carbon emissions, boost metropolitan economies, and allow urban society to thrive in spite of rising seas and climate disasters. New wetlands, floodgates, and other adaptive infrastructures allow water to coexist with urban space; new parks, such as New York’s High Line and Chicago’s 606, celebrate the interweaving of built and natural environments and suggest how outmoded infrastructure can be repurposed for civic benefit. While the climate dilemmas at hand are historically new, the use of landscaped environments in the service of solving social problems is not. Dating to the first generation of urban park development in the 19th century, planners have deployed green spaces as solutions to various cultural, political, and economic conundrums of the city. Offering an historical parallel and counterweight to investigations of contemporary urban–environmental dynamics, this paper investigates the period of park development that occurred in the 19th century in North America and Europe, using Chicago’s Olmsted-designed South Park (the contemporary Washington and Jackson Parks) as a case study. I argue that green spaces’ distinct nexus of (1) normative cultural meanings around nature, (2) power relations bound up in dominant landscape aesthetics, and (3) direct link to the economic realm via the structuring of land values have made green space development a powerful ‘cultural fix’: a means of using social space to mitigate perceived social crises. Understanding the historical foundations of green spaces’ use as cultural fixes can inform contemporary analyses, particularly as new landscape ideologies emerge as part of broader green urbanism development and climate change adaptation strategies.

Abstract:This study focuses on converting abandoned elevated transportation infrastructure into high-quality, pedestrian-oriented public spaces. To discuss planning implications, we categorized the outcomes of various projects into typologies. This practice may be a trend; however, it remains scarcely understood, depriving planning professionals of adequate tools to assess the potential and adequacy of conversion. By tracing its origin within the history of linear parks and green corridor planning, we discuss the general conversion of abandoned transportation infrastructure and the transition to elevated parks as the outcome. Subsequently, considering the existing studies on this genealogy, we defined three typologies of elevated parks according to an interconnected understanding of their connectivity, design, location, and functions. By reviewing the elevated parks within this genealogy and providing a framework for this typological study, we offer a reference for planners to accurately interpret and use this planning practice to design public spaces.

Abstract:Parks, Playgrounds and Beaches for the Los Angeles Region , the 1930 report produced by Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm in association with the urban planning firm Harlan Bartholomew and Associates, sought to mitigate unprecedented urban expansion and preserve Los Angeles' popular image as a natural paradise by allowing for the creation of an interconnected system of parks and recreational spaces. In advocating a mixture of traditional landscape aesthetics characteristic of nineteenth-century urban park planning along with more modern social-scientific transportation and regional planning proposals, the report addressed a wide array of issues ranging from recreation and public health to nature appreciation and automobility. Underlying these divergent concerns is a minefield of shifting ideas about the value of nature and its place in the modern metropolis. The report did not embrace an environmental agenda. Rather, it sought to preserve and create scenery. Under the rubric of 'scenery as an asset', the landscape envisaged in the park plan was cloaked in images and ideas associated with nature while it advanced a cultural agenda that reinforced the dominant ideology of progress, technology and commercial development. This essay examines the cultural and intellectual under-pinnings of the proposed park plan as a means to explore the myth of comprehensive planning as an environmental cure-all.

Abstract:For four years, Frederick G. Todd (1876–1948) studied and practiced with the Boston-based Olmsted Brothers, the seminal landscape architecture and town planning firm. The Olmsteds executed ambitious plans for parks, park systems, urban design, and suburban development according to the pioneering design principles of Frederick Law Olmsted Sr and his two sons, John Charles and Frederick Law Jr. In 1900, Todd left the firm to establish the first landscape architecture office in Canada. While Todd was deeply influenced by the ideas of Olmsted Sr and his sons, he arguably had more direct impact on Canadian city development than his mentors. Many Todd projects survive as treasured open spaces, and sought-after residential enclaves. However, despite Todd’s impressive career his reputation remains overshadowed by the legacy of the Olmsteds.

Abstract:Park planning, once at the root of the profession during the nineteenth century, can again provide cities with a means to improve public health through restricting access to automobiles. This intercept study, conducted in New Orleans City Park, found that two-thirds of users support weekend street closures to automobiles. Widespread support (63%) exists even among the 72% of people who arrived by automobile. This study also found measurable stated benefits from restricting car access. For more than 53% of the sample that stated that they would walk more in a car-free zone, respondents noted that they would walk nearly 30 min more per month. These findings suggest that planners and policy-makers have a cost-effective option to improve cities and public health – taming the automobile in urban parks.

Abstract:Urban design literature says that public open space in a station area could promote walking and other types of physical activity, enhance place attractiveness, and increase property values. In the context of station areas, however, there is a lack of empirical studies on the relationship between the presence of parks and sustainable travel behavior, which is one of the primary goals of transit-oriented developments (TODs). This study examined the impact of park provision on transit users' mode choice in three U.S. regions: Atlanta (GA), Boston (MA), and Portland (OR). This study utilized multilevel multinomial logistic regression to account for hierarchical data structures-trips nested within station areas-and multiple travel modes-automobiles, transit, and walking. After controlling for the built environment and trip attributes, this study showed that when there was a park, people were more likely to walk or take transit to access or egress a transit station. A transit station having a park nearby may provide a more pleasant first-mile/last-mile travel experience. This paper demonstrated that station areas need to incorporate more public space, an overlooked element in current TOD plans.

Abstract:This article aims to shed light on the evolution of the urban promenade as a form of urban planning that started in the eighteenth century to give city dwellers suitable places for strolling and encounters. Nowadays, the urban promenade connects with sports and recreation through sporting facilities such as soccer fields, skate parks, etc. Thus, the urban promenade seems to combine, on one hand, the imperatives of active, yet leisurely commuting, and on the other, accessibility (on foot, by bicycle, by tramway) to diverse sporting facilities in a place with a strong heritage potential. Is integrating a sports park within the urban promenade effective or inconsistent? To answer this, additional light will be shed on the ‘parc des sports Saint-Michel’ and certain key areas (skate park, cycling path, etc.), in the ‘quais de Bordeaux’ using structured observation.
Interlinking People and Nature through the Technologized Urban Greenway

Abstract:The project area is located along the Danube River in Budapest, and as a peninsula, has a significant role in the city on an ecological level. In my research, I present the project from the industrial revolution up to the present day. In my concluding remarks, various design ideas for implementation on the peninsula and in its neighborhood were demonstrated. The abandoned Népsziget with its industrial site holds a lot of potential for cultural and environmental development. When it comes to city planning in Budapest the main issue is the decrease of greenfield territories in the suburban areas while the city area has many different sizes of brownfield sites which have a potential for restoration. The other important aspect of the area is its connection with the Danube River that needs to be taken into account because of the newly emerging effort to create resilient riverbanks in cities. I identified two strategies for the development of Népsziget. On a municipal level the connection of public transport, land use, green space character, and its core functions were improved. As a large-scale transportation development, a 5 km long greenway connection was created with the EuroVELO 6 bicycle route which runs along the riverside within the identified brownfield project area. The greenway, accessible for pedestrians and cyclists, has both cultural and educational functions and is digitally connected (through a private network) with the redesigned museum park that replaces the mentioned brownfield site in my plans. A special feature of the program is infrastructure running on renewable energy and providing information about the priority design area and the relationship between the city and water. It also personalizes the space by linking the user's electronic device to the new development area. The Nepsziget urban greenway project took shape through the shared vision of the cooperation of designers such as engineers (landscape design, civil, water construction, electrical), architects, scientists, and artists. It also includes many innovative constructions – solar panels, smart information columns, stormwater management, energy generating pavement, digital info post – that promote the ecological and sustainable functioning of the area. The concept creates a thematic route for active and passive recreation, including a park with cultural and technological innovations. Abstract:Journal of Urban History, Ahead of Print. Endorsement of open spaces internalized within residential blocks was an iconic concept promoted by the British garden city movement in the early twentieth century. Advancing various social goals, they were associated within a gendered ideology of domesticity, child safety, local food production, and community-centeredness. This article examines American responses through theoretical reformulation, endorsement, opposition, and uneven practical experiments situated against the maturing science of planned suburban development. Raymond Unwin included these spaces in a seminal morphological exposition, developing the concept of the quadrangle with a variety of uses including agricultural allotments, tennis courts, and playgrounds. Views of leading American community planners are canvassed, split between those promoting agricultural commons, landscaped gardens and playgrounds, and opponents citing upkeep and security concerns. Evolution of the interior park arguably peaked with Radburn which established a new iconic form and narrative of interior parks at a larger scale.

The City Park as a Public Good Reference for Internet Policy Making

Abstract:Extensive literature has provided evidence of the organic nature of the Internet as a domain for different sorts of activities. Most policy making regarding the Internet, however, has focused on its economic dimensions (e.g. e-commerce, copyrights, privacy) while taking timid steps when it comes to its cultural and social dimensions. We propose a more comprehensive approach for global policy making on the Internet by looking retrospectively at processes that led to the creation of urban parks, and examining those processes in light of public goods theory. We conducted historical and theoretical analyses to show that, in the same way urban parks define spaces that mediate between different functions of the city, it is possible to define buffer spaces within the Internet that mediate between competing spheres of activity. As a complex phenomenon involving infrastructure, applications, and content, the Internet possesses features that can be located at different points between purely private and purely public goods. This fact parallels the growing attention that public goods theorists are paying to non-economic factors to explain the provisions of goods under circumstances that do not easily fit supply/demand laws. We argue that urban parks, as hybrid public goods, offer a reference for the design of policies that harmonize competing interests because they are spaces justified by manifold rationales (economic, political, social and cultural). As parks offer possibilities for spontaneous re-appropriations of the city as a cohesive entity (i.e. something beyond a disconnected collection of populations), defining similar multi-purpose spaces on the Internet would facilitate coexistence of competing and complementary behaviours by allowing users to re-appropriate this technology as a comprehensive entity beyond a mere aggregation of transactions and interests.

Abstract:The design of public space in US cities has experienced a major transformation over the past five decades. As traditional urban centres have declined as foci for civic and economic activity, new centres—usually shopping malls—have emerged on the urban fringe. As old malls age and decline in market appeal, new forms are appearing that mimic many aspects of the abandoned town centre, although in private rather than public contexts. Emerging forms of suburban public space are examined by means of case studies of several US shopping centres including reinvented old malls (‘mall-overs’), new main street malls (townscape malls), malled main streets and hybrid forms that combine aspects of main street and mall. The analysis focuses on spatial form, symbolism and imagery, pedestrian friendliness, connections with the larger context, public uses and limitations on use. Urban designers, landscape architects and planners can learn much from malls in making old main streets work. They can also learn from successful main streets how to reshape old malls and create more successful new main street shopping centres.

Abstract:The disappearance of historic buildings can tear at the emotions of neighbors and advocates, yet the disruption of a historic urban plan is rarely noted or mourned and does not receive the attention from planners that it deserves. Just as they stay aware of important buildings, preservationists and planners should take up the street and lot patterns as a cause to preserve because it provides a protective infrastructure for historic character and buildings. The urban plan, laid down as the place was founded, is not only an important historic resource in its own right but also a framework for change and a safeguard for the character of a place and its historic buildings.

Despite these professions’ best efforts, the creation of such streets has proven difficult to implement due to the design practices employed by traffic engineers. This article details how engineering practices modify the design of urban streets and provides a thematic review of recent innovations to engineering guidance. It concludes by presenting four general strategies for ensuring that walkable streets emerge from the engineering phases of the project planning and design process.

Abstract:While the first part of this two‐part essay portrayed the bleakness of the suburban public realm in the USA, the debate over how physical planning can contribute to making it more vibrant is the subject of this second part. Eurourbanism, or the practice of looking to European cities for a design paradigm, has been criticized on the grounds that the USA has its own distinct public realm which is either non‐spatial in character or is located in ‘non‐traditional’ public spaces, such as shopping malls, in contrast with the more ‘traditional’ European sites such as streets and squares. But there are questions about whether the distinctive ‘American public realm’ is as democratic, or can offer the diversity of experience of the ‘traditional’ public realm. A more recent addition to the debate has been ‘new urbanism’ or ‘neotraditionalism’, whose proponents have put forth a set of planning guidelines for suburbia by drawing on design principles embodied in the traditional American small town. The essay critically evaluates these guidelines by examining their application in two neotraditional developments and proposes a research agenda to move the debate ahead.

Abstract:Recreational parks, much like new towns, can be considered as 'places of memory'. 1 1 Loïc Valdelorge, 'Des villes pour mémoire', Ethnologie française 1/1 (2003), 81–90. They mark a complete renewal of French planning policies from the mid-1960s onwards, which were linked to the emergence of a new urban and landscape utopia. At the dawn of its 50th anniversary, the Cergy-Pontoise Recreational Park can be seen as an original and emblematic case study of such landscape designs. It was a laboratory for a young generation of landscape architects, in which they were able to develop and implement principles that are at the heart of teaching the profession in France today. These include observing the terrain, considering the site as a resource for the designed landscape, mastering earthworks and accompanying processes of landscape transformation. The park design allows us to re-examine the questions that landscape architects had to face and the formal answers they brought. We will confront them with today's design practice and role of landscape architecture in order to reflect on the contemporary context of urban and territorial transition.

Landscape Evaluation for an Urban Park in Athens

Abstract:This paper demonstrate the current situation of the urban park (Pedio Areos) in the centre of Athens and deals with its management issues. Two major problems are the daily maintenance and safety. As it is known, parks offer a locality where the city dwellers might achieve the objectives of a relaxing and pleasant process, such as walk in safety, cycle, enjoy the nature, sunbath and their children play safely as well. All these can be accomplished with assumption that the park proper designed and organized. Landscape Design is essential to a synthesis of the climate, geography, culture, history, and physical design fields. It is based on "cultural climate" that creates variety and originality of urban views and landscape. The analysis of the structure of regional landscape focuses on the mutual relations between urban structures and natural features. They give new aesthetic design concepts to civic and landscape design. Some of the results, of the research, also illustrate that people need to spend their free time in a more colourful, natural, aesthetic environment, with variation of landscapes. Following the examination of questionnaires, the designer is given the possibility to take into account the views of users and combining them with his personal identity, be able to create an appropriate master plan of the external area and a detailed design. Abstract:The fundamental concept of shared street is integration of traffic and pedestrian activity as a positive principle for street planning. Shared streets have been very successful in several countries in terms of reductions in traffic accidents, increased social interaction and children's play, and a high degree of satisfaction by the residents. This paper proposes the concept of shared street to solve traffic problem without reorganizing traditional street structure and without disturbing traditional function of street as a living space for residents. And this study examines detail concepts and techniques of the shared street and applies them to a pedestrian oriented streetscape design of "Ducksugung-Gil," Seoul, which was one of the most important streets in Korean modernization history.n history.
