Abstract:Automatic white balance (AWB) is a crucially important part of digital still camera. It keeps constant color of an image by eliminating the color cast caused by non-canonical illuminant. A dynamic threshold is used to remove outliers in $$ C_{b} $$ and $$ C_{r} $$ components and detect the near-white region in an image. And we also describe a technique using both the internal illumination and all pixels in the near-white region to estimate the illuminant. The results show that the proposed technique is superior or comparable to the existing AWB algorithms. The algorithm is attractive for practical applications because of the low complexity.

Abstract:Auto white balance (AWB) is an important function of digital camera. The purpose of white balance is to adjust the image to make it look like taken under standard light conditions. We present a new technique to detect the reference white point of image in this paper. This technique detects the white point of image by using dynamic threshold method, thus making it more flexible and more applicable compared to other algorithms. We test 50 images which were taken under different light sources, and find that this algorithm is better than or comparable to other algorithms both in subjective and objective aspects. At the same time, this algorithm has low complexity, and it can be easily applied to hardware implementation.

Abstract:Digital image camera has received more and more attention because of its convenience in storing and transferring, the still exist problems about it are also hot topics of research. Auto white balance is one of the problems, it’s the result of differences between image sensors and human eyes. If the illumination of environment has changed, color cast will happen in image from sensors, but image from eyes due to color constancy won’t. For weakening this inconsistence and acquiring image of same scene under canonical illumination, color adjustment according to color temperature of environment should be considered. In this paper, an auto white balance approach combined gray world and coincidence of chromaticity histogram (GWCCH) is proposed. It’s based on basic assumptions of these two methods, measures color components in image, and selects appropriate routine and arguments to implement auto white balance. In the experiment results, the proposed method can meet the theory of gray world (GW) or coincidence of chromaticity histogram (CCH) respectively, and get good effect in more scenes than these two methods.

Abstract:In recent years digital cameras have captured the camera market. Although the factors that consumer consider is the quality of the photographs produced. White balance is one of the methods used to improve the quality of the photographs. The basic white balance methods are, however powerless to handle all possible situations in the captured scene. In order to improve the white balance we divide this problem in two steps- white point detection, and white point adjustment. The proposed method basically solves the problem of detecting the white point very well. The experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve superior result in both objective and subjective evaluative terms. The complexity of the proposed system is acceptable. The propose method can be easily applied to digital cameras to obtain good results.

Abstract:Auto white balance (AWB) is an important technique for digital cameras. Human vision system has the ability to recognize the original color of an object in a scene illuminated by a light source that has a different color temperature from D65-the standard sun light. However, recorded images or video clips, can only record the original information incident into the sensor. Therefore, those recorded will appear different from the real scene observed by the human. Auto white balance is a technique to solve this problem. Traditional methods such as gray world assumption, white point estimation, may fail for scenes with large color patches. In this paper, an AWB method based on color temperature estimation clustering is presented and discussed. First, the method gives a list of several lighting conditions that are common for daily life, which are represented by their color temperatures, and thresholds for each color temperature to determine whether a light source is this kind of illumination; second, an image to be white balanced are divided into N blocks ( N is determined empirically). For each block, the gray world assumption method is used to calculate the color cast, which can be used to estimate the color temperature of that block. Third, each calculated color temperature are compared with the color temperatures in the given illumination list. If the color temperature of a block is not within any of the thresholds in the given list, that block is discarded. Fourth, the remaining blocks are given a majority selection, the color temperature having the most blocks are considered as the color temperature of the light source. Experimental results show that the proposed method works well for most commonly used light sources. The color casts are removed and the final images look natural.

Abstract:Aiming to tackle the shortage of traditional white balance algorithms on face image, an eye white based algorithm is proposed under the assumption of stability of eye white in YCrCb color space. It first compares the eye white parts of input image with standard ones under normal white light source, to produce a gain coefficient, then corrects the color cast to the image. The experiments show that our method overcomes traditional counterparts both in subjective vision viewpoint and objective evaluation while retains good applicability and simple implementation.

Abstract:In the processing of digital image,automatic white balance is used for color reproducing under alternative color temperature.In some cases,traditional algorithms for white balance are not close to real color because of its own defect.The method of automatic white balance based on grey world model can offsets the defect and get more real image.This method is a white balance algorithm based on traditional theories and the gray world model assumption.In the algorithm,different statistics area is used depending on the type of image being taken and the environment.And the blue white balance coefficient is adjusted.Emulations are done in experiments with original data and have obtained ideal results.This white balance algorithm is better than traditional algorithms and can get more real image.It can be widely used in digital image products.

Abstract:Automatic white balance plays a key role in digital color imaging system based on CCD/CMOS sensors. The gray world method and its variants are widely used for their simplicity. However, they will fail if the image is dominated by only one or two colors. The iterative method, which extracts gray color points from the image for color temperature estimation, performs well if there are enough gray color points. But it does not work in the case of serious color casts or lack of gray color points. Thus, a new method is proposed combining the iterative method and the gray world method. The iterative method is for fine adjustment, while the gray world method is for coarse adjustment. The characteristics of the digital microscope are taken into account as well. There are three major contributions in the paper. First, brightness constraint is considered during the gray color points detection. The detecting procedure is more precise as a result. Second, each frame of the video stream is divided into n-by-n blocks so as to increase the immunity to the noise. Last, the fine adjustment and the coarse adjustment are combined together. The 'Fine-Coarse-Fine' routine adjusts the image properly even though there are not sufficient gray color points. Experiments on digital microscope indicate that the proposed automatic white balance method is robust, effective and efficient.

Abstract:The spectrum distribution of the light source between scenes is usually uniform in all scenes lit by a given light source per the color constancy assumption. Nonuniform spectrum distribution results in pictures with different color temperatures in different lighting conditions. With the conventional automated white balance method, the results under different degrees of color cast are inconsistent. To resolve this, a new automated white balance algorithm is proposed to achieve uniformity in images with color cast caused by color temperature variations. The proposed method features the selection of near-white points through automated regression and the dynamic adjustment of the color components’ weights. Finally, white balance is implemented according to the selected near-white points with various percentages. The proposed method can effectively select the appropriate white reference point of the image scene under different color temperatures, so that the adjusted results of the method under different color temperatures are close. The first major contribution of this study is the minimization of differences of continual color temperature images with different color temperatures and the achievement of favorable visual effects. The second contribution is the superior outcomes yielded by the proposed method in the visualization and quantification of data compared with those from the existing methods. The experimental results demonstrate that this method yields favorable results in the improvement of experiments with continual different color temperatures. The images at various color temperatures are adjusted to approach real-world color temperatures. In addition, this method provides superior color constancy preservation to other methods.

Abstract:Automatic white balance is an important function of digital still and video cameras. The goal of white balance is to adjust the color of the pixels under different illumination automatically. In this paper, we proposed a new method of automatic white balance. In our algorithm, we detected the image edges on the value of Cb and Cr firstly, and then took the pixels near edges in the both side as references pixels to calculate the correction coefficients for R, G and B respectively. The experimental results show that our algorithm performs well even though the images are dominated by few chromatic regions and short of highlight near-white highlight pixels.. ©2006 IEEE.

Abstract:A new automatic white balance algorithm was proposed,which could calculate the color modification coefficient according to the lightness in HSL color space.The HSL color space of an image was analyzed in order to divide the lightness into several segments and pixels in each segment were classified into one group.All pixels near to gray axis in the same group were figured out,the color modification coefficient was calculated based on the average value of color components of all pixels,and then the colors of all pixels in this group were modified according to the color modification coefficient.Image data for standard color card in several kinds of color temperature were captured and analyzed respectively according to automatic white balance algorithms,which include HSL gray axis method,gray world method and perfect reflector method.Color error between calculated results of standard cards was analyzed.The result showed that HSL gray axis method has much better light environment adaptability and better color reproduction capability.

Abstract:A robust automatic white balance algorithm is proposed in this paper, using extracting gray color points in images for color temperature estimation. A gray color point is the point where R, G and B components are equivalent under the canonical light source. A little color deviation of the gray color point from gray under different color temperature is used to estimate the color temperature of the light source. The test results show that the proposed algorithm can provide a good perceive effect and has the advantage of easy realization, low complexity and robust convergence.

Abstract:This paper presents a simple and reliable auto white balance algorithm based on the similarity of chromaticity histograms. The proposed algorithm utilizes the property of the r, g and b chromaticity space that only includes the chromaticity information but not the intensity to calculate the chromaticity histograms that describe the chromatic distribution, and compute their similarity measure through Bhattacharyya distances. According to the character that the similarity of chromaticity histograms change following the variation of color temperatures of the light sources, the optimal adjusting coefficients are derived with respect to the maximum of the similarity. Eventually, Through the diagonal transformation matrix composed of the derived adjusting coefficients, the proposed method exactly implements the auto white balance. After experimenting in the real world environment and comparing to other algorithms, the performance of this algorithm is verified and obtains quite improvement as well. Actually the proposed method has been applied in the objects recognition of the outdoor robot in the real-time outdoor environment, and achieved significant effects. Abstract:Automatic white balancing has the aim of ensuring color consistency of the captured image over a wide range of light sources with different color temperatures. Almost all available automatic white balance techniques contain two main processing steps. Firstly, the illuminant is identified and some gaining coefficients are computed for each color component. After that, the red, green, and blue color components are multiplied with the corresponding gains to obtain the result image. The difference between the majority of the existing solutions rely on the method for gain computation. In this paper we deal with the second step of the AWB procedure where we expose differently each color component instead of multiplying it with a constant.

A real-time auto white balance algorithm for mobile phone cameras

Abstract:Auto white balance (AWB), a critical component of the image pipeline in digital cameras, is responsible for producing accurate color by automatically removing the undesired color cast introduced by the illumination. AWB estimates the scene illumination by processing the digital values of the pixels in the captured image; therefore, objects colors in the scene are often confused with the color of the light source, leading to wrong color cast in white balanced images. In this paper, we propose a color histogram based AWB algorithm that is capable of producing accurate color in the presence of dominant object colors. Our approach is based on a statistical estimation of the probabilities of colors in natural scenes under different illuminations. These statistics can be easily collected during the AWB calibration phase using standard equipment. The proposed AWB algorithm is computationally efficient and runs real-time in a mobile phone camera.

Abstract:Automatic white balance is one of the most important functions in digital cameras. In addition to effectively correct color bias, the automatic white balance technology should also be fit for resource-constrained hardware and meet its real-time requirements. Based on gray-edge hypothesis, this paper proposes a simple automatic white balance method using image horizontal down-sampling with the averaging filter and horizontal first-order difference on Bayer image, and discusses its algorithm flow on FPGA. The test results show that the proposed method can correct image color bias powerfully. Moreover, the analysis of resource usage on FPGA indicates that the method consumes less hardware resource and achieves high real-time capability, and its parameter selection is unrelated with resource consumption.

Abstract:This paper tries to solve the problem that different degrees of color cast will be presented when collects images from various directions in the same circumstance by using the system of Multi-vision. An automatic white balance algorithm based on the chromaticity difference is proposed, in which adopts the color difference formula CIE 1976Lab, comparing the Chromatic difference with threshold value of adjacent pixels and removing the interference pixels, the color temperature will be more accurate. And using integer multiplies and shift operation instead of floating-point arithmetic, the transformation from RGB color system to XYZ color space is optimized. This paper will start with description of algorithm principles. Following this, Chromatic difference white balance module will be built combining with DSP builder, and using Signal Compiler, the algorithm will be implemented by transplanting codes into FPGA. At last, Experimental results show that the proposed method can get a comparatively good color white balance effect by applying this algorithm into the latest Multi-vision system of panoramic stereo sphere vision.

Abstract:A white balancing method by adaptively stretching R, G and B color histograms is proposed. Different from the traditional white balancing methods which need to estimate illuminant, our method exploits the color content of image directly. Compared our method with Gray World, White Patch, Shade of Gray and 2nd order Grey Edge algorithms on 50 indoor images and 50 outdoor images, the proposed method is very simple and fast. It is suitable to be used in real-time imaging systems.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel auto white balance (AWB) algorithm for images based on an YCbCr color space. The proposed algorithm divides all the pixels into fourteen groups by Y luminance and CbCr color components. For accuracy, we employ an adaptive color samples that can obtain the sum of the accumulated pixels up to the standard group for estimating a degree of white object's color changes. The color samples are used for the adjustment of the relative amounts of red, green, and blue primary colors. In order to avoid a field-flicker noise of video streams, the proposed algorithm adopts infinite impulse response (IIR) filters that vary the operating speed of overall AWB system. The performance of the algorithm is also verified by implementing the hardware of the system.
