Abstract:Without using any templates or surfactants, hierarchical ZnS-In2S3-CuS nanospheres with nanoporous structure are successfully synthesized via a simple and convenient process. The nanospheres are aggregations of densely packed nanoparticles and nanorods. Different to the oriented attachment (OA) mechanism reported in the literature, the formation of these nanorods is believed to follow a lateral OA mechanism (nanoparticles attach along the direction perpendicular to the crystallographic axes with lateral planes as the juncture) based on the experimental data. This process could be a general phenomenon and would provide a new insight into the OA mechanism. A detailed time-resolved TEM kinetic study of the formation of the complex structure is shown. The dipole mechanism and electric field-induced growth are found to be responsible for the final architecture. Photocatalytic activities for water splitting are investigated under visible-light irradiation (lambda>400 nm) and an especially high photocatalytic activity (apparent yield of 22.6% at 420 nm) is achieved by unloaded ZnIn0.25Cu0.02S1.395 prepared at 180 degrees C for 18 h because of their high crystallinity, large pore volume, and the presence of nanorods with special microstructures.

Abstract:Hierarchical flower-like CuS hollow nanospheres were prepared using a solvothermal approach. We could facilely prepare CuS with desired surface morphology by tuning the reaction conditions. Based on our results, we propose a phenomenological pathway for the formation of hierarchical flower-like CuS hollow nanospheres via nucleation, nuclei aggregate and inside out Ostwald ripening process. The prepared CuS was characterized for the structural and morphological properties by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The obtained hierarchical flower-like CuS hollow nanospheres exhibited greatly enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for photodegradation of Rhodamine B and 2,4-dichlorophenol aqueous solution due to the synergistic effect of surface hierarchical structure with large surface area, porous hollow sphere structure and high visible light utilization.

Abstract:A hierarchical nanosphere assembled by CdS nanorods was fabricated via a simple one-pot hydrothermal route using (NH 4 ) 2 MoS 4 , Cd(NO 3 ) 2 and ethanediamine as the initial reactant. The synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. According to control experiments, it can be deduced that the (NH 4 ) 2 MoS 4 and ethanediamine may be predominantly responsible for the formation of hierarchical architecture, and a potential mechanism based on cation exchange reaction was proposed. For further investigation of the photocatalytic performance of the as-prepared samples, photocatalytic water-splitting experiment was carried out. The hierarchical CdS synthesized in the origin mol ratio of Mo:Cd = 0.3:1.4 exhibited the best performance for photocatalytic water splitting, and the hierarchical CdS with unique morphology, compared with the isolated CdS nanorod, showed an enhanced photocatalytic activity for water splitting arising from the intimate contact among CdS nanorods, incremental specific surface area and the high ratio of (002)/(100). Abstract:Flower-like spherical ZnIn2S4 superstructures about 500 nm in diameter composed of ultrathin 2-3 nm thick mesoporous nanosheets were synthesized in several minutes by facile polyol-mediated hot-injection. Due to their higher specific surface area and constituent ultrathin mesoporous nanosheets, the hierarchical ZnIn2S4 superstructures exhibited highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic H-2 production activity compared with the typical flower-like ZnIn2S4 microspheres prepared by the conventional hydrothermal method. Furthermore, this polyol-mediated hot-injection synthesis strategy is also applicable for the facile synthesis of other metal sulphide nanomaterials with different morphologies, such as CdS quantum dots, Bi2S3 nanorods, and hierarchical flower-like In2S3 and SnS spheres.

Abstract:3D-hierarchical Cu3SnS4 flowerlike microspheres have been successfully synthesized through a solvothermal process. The reaction temperature and the dosage of the sulfur source play significant roles in the growth of Cu3SnS4 flowerlike microspheres. The formation process of the hierarchical microspheres is studied well and a possible mechanism is also proposed. UV-visible absorption spectra show that the as-synthesized Cu3SnS4 microspheres with a direct band gap of 1.38 eV have stronger absorption from the UV to near-IR region. Further studies reveal that the obtained Cu3SnS4 photocatalysts without any loadings exhibit good photocatalytic activity, and the rate of H-2 evolution is determined to be 1.1 mmol h(-1) g(-1) under simulated solar irradiation.

Abstract:Hierarchical CdS microspheres self-assembled by nanowires were synthesized via an ethylenediamine tetraacetate assisted solvothermal approach using cadmium chloride and l-cysteine as reaction agents. The phase structure, morphology, and optical properties of the products were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electro-chemiluminescence, respectively. Studies showed that the final morphology of the products was strongly influenced by the concentration of ethylenediamine tetraacetate and reaction temperature. The as-prepared hierarchical CdS spheres could be a good candidate for a detective technology due to its high electro-chemiluminescence intensity.

Abstract:Hierarchically spherical materials with a core-shell structure are of special interest for a variety of promising applications. Although some advanced synthetic methods have been reported, the development of a facile strategy to fabricate hierarchically spherical materials with a core-shell structure is still desirable. Herein, hierarchical Zn2GeO4 core-shell microspheres, with stacked nanoparticles at the core and well-aligned rods at the shell, are successfully synthesized through a triethylenetetramine (TETA)-induced self-assembly route. They exhibit relatively high photocatalytic activity and stability towards degradation of organic pollutants under UV light irradiation. In addition, other diverse hierarchical Zn2GeO4 macrocrystals can be successfully prepared by rationally tuning the reaction parameters. The present synthetic strategy may allow access to fabricating other multifunctional materials with special artistical morphologies.

Abstract:Three new types of ZnO, Zn2SnO4 and Zn3V2O8 floriated hierarchical microspheres are synthesized via hydrothermal methods. The morphology, structure, band structure and photoelectric convention properties of three different type photo-catalysts are characterized and investigated in detail. It is found that all samples exhibit floriated hierarchical microspheres, composed of different kinds of nanosheet self-assembly. Moreover, the ZnO microspheres exhibit the best photocatalytic performance under UV irradiation among all photo-catalysts. The detailed photocatalytic mechanism for the ZnO, Zn2SnO4 and Zn3V2O8 floriated hierarchical microspheres is also discussed.

Abstract:Formation of solid solutions is a good strategy to acquire materials with special properties and bring forth new type of applications or enhance the performance of currently existing devices. In this study, hollow ZnxCd1-xS nanospheres with different molar ratios were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The products were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. It was found that the photocatalysis performance of the as-prepared samples could be enhanced by formation of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. In addition, their photocatalytic activities are dependent on the Zn/Cd molar ratios and nanostructures of ZnxCd1-xS solid solutions. Hollow Zn0.2Cd0.8S spheres exhibit extremely high photocatalytic activity and good re-usability, and the photocatalytic conversion of RhB reaches as high as 96% after 50 min of irradiation.

Abstract:In this investigation, a series of hierarchical CdIn2S4/g-C3N4 nanocomposites were firstly synthesized by a facile one-pot hydrothermal strategy, wherein the mesoporous g-C3N4 nanosheets were in-situ self-wrapped onto CdIn2S4 nanosheets. Systematic characterization by XRD, FT-IR, UV-vis DRS, SEM, TEM, HAAF-STEM, XPS, photoelectrochemical tests were employed to analyze the phase structure, chemical composition, morphology and photocatalytic mechanism. The application, including photo-redox reaction and photocatalytic water splitting, were used to estimate the photocatalytic activity of as-obtained CdIn2S4/g-C3N4 nanocomposites. The results indicate that CdIn2S4/g-C3N4 heterostructures exhibit more efficient improvement of the photocatalytic performances towards photo-reduction of 4-NA to corresponding 4-PDA and photocatalytic H2 generation from water splitting than these counterparts as results of construction of intimate interfacial contact, which would promote the separation of photo-generated holes and electrons. Meanwhile, benefitting from the excellent surface wrap, the CdIn2S4/g-C3N4 nanocomposites possess notable enhanced photocatalytic stability. This research may provide a promising way to fabricate highly efficient photocatalysts with excellent stability and expand the application of CdIn2S4 in fine chemical engineering.

Abstract:Hierarchical tin sulfide (SnS) nanoflowers were synthesized by a facile polyol refluxing process using tin (II) chloride and thioacetamide as precursors, ethylene glycol as the solvent, and triethanolamine as the complexing agent. The as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, FESEM, TEM and N-2 adsorption-desorption analyses. The as-synthesized SnS nanoflowers consist of mesoporous nanoplates composed of nanoparticles with a BET surface area of 30.2 m(2) g(-1) and a pore volume of 0.11 cm(3) g(-1). The growth mechanisms of the hierarchical nanoflowers were investigated by changing the amount of triethanolamine. The results indicated that the formation and array of chelate complex {[Sn(TEA)(n)](2+)center dot 2Cl(-)}(k) clusters control the shape of the SnS product. The photocatalytic properties of the samples were also explored by the photodegradation of RhB under visible light irradiation. The hierarchical nanoflowers show superior absorption ability and visible light photocatalytic activities than the nanoparticles. The facile process and the shape-controlled method presented in this paper can be extended to the synthesis of other layered metal chalcogenides. (C) 2015 The Society of Powder Technology Japan. Abstract:Hierarchical SnO2 microflowers assembled by aggregative sheets have been successfully synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. The crystal structure and optical properties of the product were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SEAD), Raman spectroscopy, UVvis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. By utilizing the SnO2 microflowers as a photocatalyst, improved photocatalytic degradation was observed towards rhodamine B (RhB) dye under UV light illumination. Abstract:In this paper, through an emulsion-based bottom-up self-assembly method, monodisperse CdSxSe1−x (x = 0–1) quantum dots (QDs) with tailoring compositions have been three-dimensionally assembled into spherical architectures in sub-micrometer sizes. UV–Vis absorption measurements revealed the enhanced light harvesting abilities of the assembled CdSxSe1−x spheres relative to their constituting QDs. HRTEM characterizations over the CdSxSe1−x assemblies suggested the existence of localized oriented adjoining of the CdSxSe1−x QDs and the resulting nano-twin structures that are favorable for photogenerated electron-hole separation. The quenching of photoluminescence and the improvement in IPCE after the assembly of CdSxSe1−x QDs provided a clue to the likely suppressed electron-hole recombination brought about by the unique architectures and interfaces derived from self-assembly. The above findings were coincided with the remarkably improved H2 evolution activities observed for the well-assembled CdSxSe1−x nanospheres in photocatalytic water splitting, underpinning the importance of the alternative strategy to design advanced semiconductor photocatalysts based on architectural engineering.

A relationship was established between the solvothermal temperature and the product structure, and thus the photocatalytic activity. Abstract:Well controlled nanosheets-based hierarchical microspheres (NSHMS) of pure covellite phase CuS were synthesized using a facile PVP assisted solvothermal process. The reaction conditions were optimized using various amounts of PVP to develop unique hierarchical structured hollow microspheres. CuS hollow structures have a bandgap of ~1.97 eV. These mesoporous structures exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity in degradation of organic dyes (Methylene Blue) under natural light in comparison to other structures of copper sulphide. These photocatalysts show extraordinary reusability with over 96.5% degradation of organic dye after 6th cycle. A “bottom-up” assembly was successfully developed to synthesize hollow microspheres with unique and well defined architectures at large scale, which offer a good opportunity to understand the fundamental significance of unusual and complex hierarchical structures for their potential applications.

Abstract:Hierarchical ZnS-based microspheres with porous structures are successfully synthesized via a facile "one pot" route without using any templates or surfactants. These microspheres are aggregations composed of wurtzite/sphalerite heterostructure nanoflakes. Interestingly, due to the doping with In, the dipole field direction of ZnS-based nanoparticles changes. As a result, the formation of heterostructure nanoflakes are found to follow a lateral oriented attachment (LOA) mechanism and a subsequent phase transformation process rather than the oriented attachment (OA) mechanism reported in previous literatures. This discovery would provide a convenient method in constructing 2D anisotropic structures and might offer a new insight to the growth process of ZnS-based materials. Furthermore, photocatalytic activities for water splitting are investigated under visible-light irradiation (lambda > 400 nm) and an enhanced photocatalytic activity (the initial rate for H(2) evolution is up to 3.7 mmol h(-1) with a concentration of photocatalyst of 45 mg L(-1)) is achieved, attributable to the particular heterostructure of 2D nanoflakes, the porous structure of 3D microspheres and the large specific area of as-prepared photocatalyst powders.
