Abstract:We recapitulate on aspects of Dyson-Schwinger equation studies relevant to pseudoscalar mesons: lattice confirmation of the DSE prediction that propagators are nonperturbatively dressed in the infrared; and exact results, e.g., in the chiral limit the leptonic decay constant vanishes for every pseudoscalar meson except the pion.

Abstract:An hallmark of present-day Dyson-Schwinger equation applications in hadron physics is the existence of a systematic and symmetry preserving truncation scheme. This enables the proof of exact results; e.g., the leptonic decay constant of every pseudoscalar meson except the pion vanishes in the chiral limit. Calculations using the scheme's leading-order truncation are reliable in the vector and flavour nonsinglet pseudoscalar channels. In this rainbow-ladder truncation, an impulse approximation provides the consistent current for all six-point quark Schwinger functions. That is well illustrated via the anomalous process pi0 -> gamma gamma. Using two-, three- and four-point Schwinger functions calculated in rainbow-ladder truncation, the textbook value of the width is obtained algebraically and independent of model details if, and only if, the impulse approximation is used to describe the associated matrix element.

Abstract:Dyson-Schwinger equations furnish a Poincaré covariant approach to hadron physics. They reveal that dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is tied to the long-range behaviour of the strong interaction and make predictions corroborated by modern lattice-QCD simulations. A hallmark in the contemporary use of DSEs is the existence of a nonperturvative, symmetry preserving truncation that enables the proof of exact results. The systematic error associated with the truncation's leading term has been quantified and this underpins an efficacious one-parameter model that is being employed to study meson excited states.

Abstract:A perspective on the contemporary application of Dyson-Schwinger equations, focusing on some recent phenomenological applications: a description and unification of light-meson observable using a one-parameter model of the effective quark-quark interaction, and studies of leptonic and nonleptonic nucleon form factors. The theory and phenomenological application of Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) have seen something of a renaissance. For example, they have been applied simultaneously to phenomena as apparently unconnected as low-energy {pi}{pi} scattering, B {r_arrow} D{sup *} decays and the equation of state for a quark gluon plasma, and there are renewed attempts to understand the origin of the infrared enhancement necessary in the kernel of the quark DSE (QCD gap equation) to generate dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB). Also significant is the appreciation that in this approach current algebra's anomalies remain a feature of the global aspects of DCSB.

Abstract:This Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) aperc,u highlights recent applications to mesons. It reports features of, and results for, pseudoscalar and scalar bound-state residues in vacuum polarisations, and exhibits how a restoration of chiral symmetry in meson trajectories could be manifest in a relationship between them. It also touches on nucleon studies, emphasising the importance of both scalar and axial-vector diquark correlations, and reporting the calculation of mu_n G_E^n(Q^2)/G_M^n(Q^2). The value of respecting symmetries, including Poincare' covariance, is stressed.

Abstract: Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) studies show that the b-quark mass-function is approximately constant, and that this is true to a lesser extent for the c-quark. These observations provide the basis for a study of the leptonic and semileptonic decays of heavy pseudoscalar mesons using a ``heavy-quark'' limit of the DSEs. When exact, this limit reduces the number of independent form factors. Semileptonic decays with light mesons in the final state are also accessible because the DSEs provide a description of light-quark propagation characteristics and light-meson structure. A description of B-meson decays is straightforward, however, the study of decays involving the D-meson indicates that c-quark mass-corrections are quantitatively important.

Abstract:A symmetry-preserving continuum approach to meson bound states in quantum field theory, employed elsewhere to describe numerous pi- and K-meson electroweak processes, is used to analyze leptonic and semileptonic decays of D-(s) mesons. Each semileptonic transition is conventionally characterized by the value of the dominant form factor at t = 0 and the following results are obtained herein: f(1)(Ds -> K)(0) = 0.673(40); f(+)(D ->pi)(0) = 0.618(31) and f(+)(D -> K)(0) = 0.756(36). Working with the computed t-dependence of these form factors and standard averaged values for vertical bar V-cd vertical bar, vertical bar V-cs vertical bar, onr arrives at the following predictions for associated branching fractions: BDs+ (-> K0e+nu epsilon) = 3.31(33) x 10(-3), B-D(0) (->pi-e+nu epsilon) = 2.73(22) x 10(-3), and B-D(0) (-> K-e+nu epsilon) = 3.83(28)%. Alternatively, using the calculated t-dependence, agreement with contemporary empirical results for these branching fractions requires vertical bar V-cd vertical bar = 0.221(9), vertical bar V-us vertical bar = 0.953(34). With all D-(s) transitions form factors in hand, the nature of SU(3)-flavor symmetry breaking in this array of processes can be analysed; and just as in the pi-K sector, the magnitude of such effects is found to be determined by the scales associated with emergent mass generation in the Standard Model, not those originating with the Higgs mechanism.

Abstract:A strongly momentum-dependent dressed-quark mass function is basic to QCD. It is central to the appearance of a constituent-quark mass-scale and an existential prerequisite for Goldstone modes. Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSEs) studies have long emphasised this importance, and have proved that QCD's Goldstone modes are the only pseudoscalar mesons to possess a nonzero leptonic decay constant in the chiral limit when chiral symmetry is dynamically broken, while the decay constants of their radial excitations vanish. Such features are readily illustrated using a rainbow-ladder truncation of the DSEs. In this connection we find (in GeV): f_{eta_c(1S)}= 0.233, m_{eta_c(2S)}=3.42; and support for interpreting eta(1295), eta(1470) as the first radial excitations of eta(548), eta'(958), respectively, and K(1460) as the first radial excitation of the kaon. Moreover, such radial excitations have electromagnetic diameters greater than 2fm. This exceeds the spatial length of lattices used typically in contemporary lattice-QCD.

Abstract:We study pseudoscalar and scalar mesons using a practical and symmetry preserving truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations. We investigate and compare properties of ground and radially excited meson states. In addition to exact results for radial meson excitations we also present results for meson masses and decay constants from the chiral limit up to the charm-quark mass, e.g., the mass of the χ c0 (2P) meson.

Abstract:We provide a brief review of recent progress in the study of mesons using QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations. Along the way we touch on aspects of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking but in the main focus upon: exact results for pseudoscalar mesons, including aspects of the η-η' problem; a realisation that the so-called vacuum condensates are actually an intrinsic, localised property of hadrons; an essentially nonperturbative procedure for constructing a symmetry-preserving Bethe-Salpeter kernel, which has enabled a demonstration that dressed-quarks possess momentum-dependent anomalous chromo-and electromagnetic moments that are large at infrared momenta, and a resolution of a longstanding problem in understanding the mass-splitting between the ρ-and a1-mesons such that they are now readily seen to be parity partners in the meson spectrum; features of electromagnetic form factors connected with charged and neutral pions; and a computation and explanation of valence-quark distribution functions in pseudoscalar mesons. We argue that in solving QCD, a constructive feedback between theory and extant and forthcoming experiments will enable constraints to be placed on the infrared behaviour of QCD's β-function, the nonperturbative quantity at the core of hadron physics.

The gap equation reveals that dynamical chiral symmetry breaking is tied to the long-range behaviour of the strong interaction, which is thereby constrained by observables, and the pion is precisely understood, and seen to exist simultaneously as a Goldstone mode and a bound state of strongly dressed quarks. The systematic error associated with the simplest truncation has been quantified, and it underpins a one-parameter model efficacious in describing an extensive body of mesonic phenomena. Incipient applications to baryons have brought successes and encountered challenges familiar from early studies of mesons, and promise a covariant field theory upon which to base an understanding of contemporary large momentum transfer data.

Abstract:The real-world properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) - the strongly-interacting piece of the Standard Model - are dominated by two emergent phenomena: confinement; namely, the theory's elementary degrees-of-freedom - quarks and gluons - have never been detected in isolation; and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (DCSB), which is a remarkably effective mass generating mechanism, responsible for the mass of more than 98% of visible matter in the Universe. These phenomena are not apparent in the formulae that define QCD, yet they play a principal role in determining Nature's observable characteristics. Much remains to be learnt before confinement can properly be understood. On the other hand,the last decade has seen important progress in the use of relativistic quantum field theory, so that we can now explain the origin of DCSB and are beginning to demonstrate its far-reaching consequences. Dyson-Schwinger equations have played a critical role in these advances. These lecture notes provide an introduction to Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs), QCD and hadron physics, and illustrate the use of DSEs to predict phenomena that are truly observable.

Abstract:We provide a snapshot of Dyson-Schwinger equation applications to the theory and phenomenology of hadrons. Exact results for pseudoscalar mesons are highlighted, with details relating to the U_A(1) problem. Calculated masses of the lightest J=0,1 states are discussed. We recapitulate upon studies of nucleon properties and give a perspective on the contribution of quark orbital angular momentum to the spin of a nucleon at rest.

Abstract:The dichotomy of the pion as QCD's Goldstone mode and a bound state of massive constituents is easily understood using the Dyson-Schwinger equations. That provides the foundation for an efficacious phenomenology, which correlates the pion's charge radius and electromagnetic form factor with its valence quark distribution function; and simultaneously provides a Poincare' covariant description of the nucleon, its form factors and, more recently, meson photoproduction processes. Abstract:Using data collected near the Ds*+Ds- peak production energy E-cm=4170 MeV by the CLEO-c detector, we study the decays of D-s(+) mesons to two pseudoscalar mesons. We report on searches for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed D-s(+) decay modes K+eta, K+eta('), pi K-+(S)0, K+pi(0), and the isospin-forbidden decay mode D-s(+)->pi(+)pi(0). We normalize with respect to the Cabibbo-favored D-s(+) modes pi(+)eta, pi(+)eta('), and (K+KS0), and obtain ratios of branching fractions: B(D-s(+)-> K+eta)/B(D-s(+)->pi(+)eta)=(8.9 +/- 1.5 +/- 0.4)%, B(D-s(+)-> K+eta('))/B(D-s(+)->pi(+)eta('))=(4.2 +/- 1.3 +/- 0.3)%, B(D-s(+)->pi K-+(S)0)/B(D-s(+)->(K+KS0))=(8.2 +/- 0.9 +/- 0.2)%, B(D-s(+)-> K+pi(0))/B(D-s(+)->(K+KS0))=(5.5 +/- 1.3 +/- 0.7)%, and B(D-s(+)->pi(+)pi(0))/B(D-s(+)->(K+KS0))< 4.1% at 90% C.L., where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.
