Nitric Oxide
Abstract:AIM Increased formation of reactive oxygen species and reduced nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability increase renal vascular reactivity and have been linked to renal and cardiovascular diseases. Supplementation with inorganic nitrate or nitrite to stimulate NO formation reduces blood pressure in humans and has shown therapeutic effects in models of hypertension and renal disease but the mechanisms are not clear. This study investigated the hypothesis that nitrate and nitrite may reduce angiotensin II (Ang II)-mediated contractility of the renal microcirculation by lowering oxidative stress and increase NO bioavailability.
