Abstract:To further decrease the coding computational complexity of the hierarchical B frames in the traffic surveillance video,a fast algorithm suitable for the hierarchical B frames based on the background difference method was proposed.The background image was obtained by the improved single Gaussian method based on the spatio-temporal model.The difference image was obtained by the background difference method.The removing jitter algorithm using the sliding window was adopted to obtain the correct motion regions.The statistical data of the key parameters which will affect the macro block mode selection of the hierarchical B frames in the traffic surveillance were analyzed to reduce the possible coding mode,thus the coding speed was improved.The experimental results show that compared with the standard algorithm,the proposed algorithm can save the coding time by about 85% without degrading the coding efficiency and the decoding video quality.

Abstract:H.264/AVC is the latest international video coding standard, which provides a superior coding efficiency, compared with MPEG-4 and other previous standards. Context Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC) was adopted by H.264/AVC and plays a very important role in improving the video coding efficiency. However, the coding speed of CABAC is restricted by high computational complexity, which becomes a major bottleneck in many applications. According to the analysis of the CABAC coding flow and its computational complexity, an effective accelerating CABAC algorithm based on adaptive probability estimation update (APU-CABAC) to improve its coding speed is proposed. Instead of every binary symbol's coding, the probability estimation update part in APU-CABAC is done after every packet. In addition, the packet size is adaptively adjusted according to the comparison of the symbol changing frequency coefficient of the last and current packets. Experimental results show that APU-CABAC provides a substantial improvement in the coding speed of CABAC while coding efficiency declines only a little.

Abstract:Block-matching motion estimation plays an important role in video coding. In this paper, we present an adaptive block-matching algorithm, which determines the candidate motion vectors and a dynamic search window based on the spatial and temporal neighbor blocks. According to the mean absolute error (MAE) based on these motion vectors, stop search, 3/spl times/3 neighbor window search and modified 3SS search in the dynamic window is applied adaptively. This method can significantly reduce search time while the performance is still maintained. Simulation results show the performance of this algorithm is very similar to that of the full search algorithm (FSA) and the computation complexity is smaller than that of 3SS and 4SS.

Abstract:In this paper, an adaptive genetic block-matching algorithm is proposed for video compression. Specially, some novel adaptive elements, including initialization, parent selection and termination rule, are contrived. Extensive simulations with different test video sequences have confirmed that the proposed algorithm can improve the preciseness of block-matching search, while keeping low computational complexity.

Abstract:There exists a great challenge in real-time implementation of motion estimation algorithms in video coding because of the huge computational overhead of motion estimation algorithms. A novel low-latency motion estimator architecture by using VLSI compression array is proposed for block matching algorithms, which can effectively implement full search, especially various hierarchical search algorithms, e.g. three-step search. Compared with the traditional accumulation tree architecture it raises the efficiency further with more area-saving. Based on it, an adaptive block matching algorithm and its hardware implementation method are given, which decrease the computing burden of block matching to about 1/2-1/4 with a very few hardware penalty and even lower latency.

Abstract:Multiview video coding (MVC) is an ongoing standard. In the working draft, motion estimation and disparity estimation are both employed in the encoding procedure. It achieves the highest possible coding efficiency, but results in extremely large encoding time, which obstructs it from practical applications. We propose a macroblock (MB) level adaptive search range algorithm utilizing inter-view correlation for motion estimation in MVC to reduce the complexity of the coder. For multi-view sequences, the motion vectors of the corresponding MBs in previously coded view are first extracted to analyze motion homogeneity. On the basis of motion homogeneity, MBs are classified into three types (MB in the region with homogeneous motion, with medium homogeneous motion, or with complex motion), and search range is adaptively determined for each type MB. Experimental results show that our algorithm can save 75% average computational complexity of motion estimation, with negligible loss of coding efficiency.

Abstract:H.264,the latest video coding standard,achieves significant improvement in coding efficiency compared with previous standards.The high coding efficiency is based on some new techniques which also lead to high computational-complexity.H.264 uses variable-block-size motion estimation,which is the most time-consuming module.In this paper,we propose a fast variable-block-size motion estimation algorithm for H.264.The algorithm is based on three schemes: stationary block prediction,predictive search for non-stationary blocks and adaptive refinement search in merging process.Experimental results show that our algorithm can reduce the computational-complexity to 3% of fast full search motion estimation algorithm,with negligible PSNR loss and bit rate increase.

Abstract:An adaptive blockmatching algorithm is proposed based on the genetic algorithm for video compression. Novel adaptive elements accelerate and adapt to the evolving process by exploiting the inherent correlation between video pictures.These elements include the initial population selection, the parent selection and the termination judgment. Abstract:Most of the traditional block-matching algorithms for motion estimation (ME) can only yield local optimal motion vectors (MVs). In this paper, the autoregressive moving average process (ARMA) model is selected to formulate the correlation of neighboring blocks in a frame, and the adaptive Kalman filtering algorithm is applied to refine the MVs. The horizontal and vertical ARMA models are constructed to utilize the filtering algorithm twice to get a better performance. Our method can also be extended to realize disparity estimation (DE) in order to apply it in a multi-view video coding (MVC) system. The experiment results show the effectiveness of our method to improve the accuracy of conventional fast block matching algorithms.

Abstract:A fast multiple reference assignment scheme is proposed to reduce the motion search complexity in the H.264 video standard in this work. The relationship between the temporal search range and the block size is exploited to develop a new algorithm, called the block-size adaptive referencing (BAR) scheme, that assigns a different number of references in a block-size adaptive manner. The expected rate-distortion (RD) coding loss due to the use of fewer references in the BAR scheme is first analyzed. Furthermore, it is found that the RD coding loss of BAR is related to the RD gradient through a model. Thus, a proper BAR scheme can be chosen to minimize the reference frame numbers while keeping the expected RD loss under a target level. Finally, fast motion search is performed within selected references in a block-size adaptive manner. Experimental results show that the proposed BAR scheme can save approximately 25-70% of the encoding complexity in H.264 (JM10.1) motion estimation with negligible degradation in the RD performance.

Abstract:The authors present a new algorithm for fast block motion estimation in video coding applications. In this new algorithm, general characteristics of the block motion field are explored and related to the block motion vector statistics in the search window. As such, they present a way to design the optimal checking point pattern based on minimizing an objective function that is defined to be an average distance measure and such a pattern can be made adaptive to the motion statistics. Then, they suggest a regular checking point pattern which can be regarded as a sub-optimal solution. Simulation results show that motion estimation with the suggested pattern is both fast and robust

Abstract:A new adaptive motion estimation algorithm based on correlation of motion vectors is presented in this paper.The algorithm utilizes the correlation information of current block's three neighbouring motion vectors to classify current block into correlation-type block and independent-type block.Different motion estimation methods are applied for correlation-type block and independent-type block to achieve lower computational complexity and good estimation accuracy.The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has much lower computational complexity than other motion estimation algorithms,such as full search(FS),diamond search(DS) and Hexagon-based search(HEXBS),with no severe PSNR degradation.

Abstract:In video coding,one of the key technologies is the block-matching algorithm,and its efficiency directly affects the quality of video transmission.Up to now,there have been many nice search algorithms to improve the efficiency of the block-matching algorithm.And the genetic algorithm is a random search algorithm,which can get and accumulate some information related to the search space automatically in the search process.It can control the search process by self-adaptatlon to find the best result.In this paper,the genetic algorithm is improved,which is applied to the block-matching algorithm for low bit-rate video coding.As the result of experiments,the search efficiency is improved while maintaining the better performance.

Abstract:The emerging H.264 advanced video coding (H.264/AVC) standard achieves significant improvement in coding efficiency compared with previous standards such as MPEG-2 and H.263. One major contribution of its gain profits from variable-block-size motion estimation, which also leads to higher computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a fast predictive variable-blocksize motion estimation algorithm for H.264/AVC. The algorithm takes advantage of three effective predictive schemes - stationary block prediction, predictive search for non-stationary blocks and predictive multi-pattern refinement search in merging process. Experimental results and comparative analysis have shown that our roposed algorithm can reduce the computational complexity up to about 2% of fast full search motion estimation algorithm, with negligible average PSNR loss of 0.065 dB and bit rate increase of 2.43%.
Adaptive motion vector resolution prediction in block-based video coding

Abstract:In the classical block-based video coding, motion vector is derived for each coding block to remove the inter-frame redundancy. However, the motion vector resolution is usually restricted to be identical, typically 1/4-pixel resolution, regardless of the different video contents. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that can adaptively select the optimal motion vector resolution at frame level according to the characteristics of the video contents. We first derived a residual energy model, and the major factors that may impact the motion vector resolution are considered, including the texture complexity, motion scale, inter-frame noise and quantization parameter. Experimental results have shown that the proposed scheme can achieve 1.8% BD-rate gain on average without complexity increment.

Abstract:Block-matching algorithm (BMA) is widely adopted in video coding. However, many blocks contain both background pixels and moving-object pixels, which often differ significantly in true physical motions. Using BMA for these blocks may lead to large prediction error and thus decreased coding efficiency. More accurate prediction can be achieved by object-based coding, which segments a video frame into different objects and codes these objects separately. However, additional bits are required for encoding the shape of the objects, and the computation complexity of object segmentation is often very high. In this paper, a composite-block model and a joint-prediction algorithm are proposed. This algorithm can get accurate prediction without shape coding, and its computation complexity is very close to that of the BMA. The experimental result shows that the new H.264 coder enhanced by our algorithm outperforms original H.264 coder by approximately 0.8~1.5 dB

Abstract:Image and video coding in block-based image coding can cause blocking artifacts, which severely degrade visual quality in the compressed sequences. Loop deblocking filter method can reduce these artifacts and improve the video objective and subjective quality obviously. In this paper, we propose an efficient deblocking filtering method for multiview video coding, which considers the color bleeding distortion. Experimental results show that this proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional deblocking algorithm in terms of PSNR and subjective visual quality when QP value is relatively high.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a fast motion estimation algorithm for arbitrarily shaped video coding in MPEG-4. This novel algorithm takes advantage of our new discovery about the close relation between the best matching block and its shape information-alpha plane. Without any additional padding computation, this new motion estimation algorithm computes the sum of absolute difference (SAD) between two alpha planes rather than the pixels' intensities. Compared with the full search block-matching algorithm (recommended in the MPEG-4 standard), the proposed algorithm achieves an impressive speed-up ratio with very minor quality degradation and little bit-count increase. Extensive simulations are provided in this paper to demonstrate this fact.

Abstract:A no-reference blockiness metric which is used to measure blocking artifacts of H.264/AVC coding videoconference, is presented in this paper. The encode information extracted from bit stream in the decoding process and the human face information are used to construct a region-of-interest (ROI) map. Based on the ROI map, the Sobel operator is adopted to make the fast estimation of blocking artifacts for H.264 videos. Experimental results show that the proposed method can measure blocking artifacts consistent with the real quality and show high sensitivity to the bit rate.
