Abstract:The complete set of minimal obstructions for embedding graphs into the torus is still not determined. In this paper, we present all obstructions for the torus of connectivity 2. Furthermore, we describe the building blocks of obstructions of connectivity 2 for any orientable surface.

Abstract:If a graph $G$ can be embedded on the torus, and be embedded linklessly in $\mathbb{R}^3$, it's not known whether or not we can always find a linkless embedding of $G$ contained in the standard (unknotted) torus; We show that, for orders 9 and below, any graph which is both embeddable on the torus, and linklessly in $\mathbb{R}^3$, can be embedded linklessly in the standard torus.

Abstract:The Graph Minor Theorem of Robertson and Seymour implies a finite set of obstructions for any minor closed graph property. We show that there are only three obstructions to knotless embedding of size 23, which is far fewer than the 92 of size 22 and the hundreds known to exist at larger sizes. We describe several other topological properties whose obstruction set demonstrates a similar dip at small size. For order ten graphs, we classify the 35 obstructions to knotless embedding and the 49 maximal knotless graphs.

Abstract:Suppose an orientation-preserving action of a finite group G on the closed surface $\Sigma _g$ of genus $g>1$ extends over the 3-torus $T^3$ for some embedding $\Sigma _g\subset T^3$. Then $|G|\le 12(g-1)$, and this upper bound $12(g-1)$ can be achieved for $g=n^2+1, 3n^2+1, 2n^3+1, 4n^3+1, 8n^3+1, n\in {\mathbb {Z}}_+$. The surfaces in $T^3$ realizing a maximal symmetry can be either unknotted or knotted. Similar problems in the non-orientable category are also discussed. The connection with minimal surfaces in $T^3$ is addressed and the situation when the maximally symmetric surfaces above can be realized by minimal surfaces is identified.

Abstract:In this paper, we study visibility representations of graphs that are embedded on a torus or a Klein bottle. Mohar and Rosenstiehl showed that any toroidal graph has a visibility representation on a flat torus bounded by a parallelogram, but left open the question whether one can assume a rectangular flat torus, i.e., a flat torus bounded by a rectangle. Independently the same question was asked by Tamassia and Tollis. We answer this question in the positive. With the same technique, we can also show that any graph embedded on a Klein bottle has a visibility representation on the rectangular flat Klein bottle.

Abstract:Embeddings of maximal tori into classical groups over global fields of characteristic not 2 are the subject matter of several recent papers, with special attention to the Hasse principle. The present paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for this embedding problem, and in particular for the Hasse principle to hold. Using work of Borovoi, this is interpreted as a Brauer-Manin type obstruction.

Abstract:Though embedding problems have been considered for several regular graphs, it is still an open problem for hypercube into torus. In the paper, we prove the conjecture mathematically and obtain the minimum wirelength of embedding for hypercube into Cartesian product of paths and/or cycles. In addition, we explain that Gray code embedding is an optimal strategy in such embedding problems.

New minimal surface doublings of the Clifford torus and contributions to questions of Yau

Abstract:The purpose of this article is three-fold. First, we apply a general theorem from our earlier work to produce many new minimal doublings of the Clifford Torus in the round three-sphere. This construction generalizes and unifies prior doubling constructions for the Clifford Torus, producing doublings with catenoidal bridges arranged along parallel copies of torus knots. Ketover has also constructed similar minimal surfaces by min-max methods as suggested by Pitts-Rubinstein, but his methods apply only to surfaces which are lifts of genus two surfaces in lens spaces, while ours are not constrained this way. Second, we use this family to prove a new, quadratic lower bound for the number of embedded minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ with prescribed genus. This improves upon bounds recently given by Ketover and Karpukhin-Kusner-McGrath-Stern, and contributes to a question of Yau about the structure of the space of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ with fixed genus. Third, we verify Yau's conjecture for the first eigenvalue of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ in the following cases. First, for all minimal surface doublings of the equatorial two-sphere constructible by our earlier general theorem. Second, for all the Clifford Torus doublings constructed in this article.

Abstract:We prove that for any compact orientable connected 3-manifold with torus boundary, a concatenation of it and the direct product of the circle and the Klein bottle with an open 2-disk removed admits a Lagrangian embedding into the standard symplectic 6-space. Moreover, minimal Maslov number of the Lagrangian embedding is equal to 1.

A Universal Triangulation for Flat Tori

Abstract:A result due to Burago and Zalgaller (1960, 1995) states that every orientable polyhedral surface, one that is obtained by gluing Euclidean polygons, has an isometric piecewise linear (PL) embedding into Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^3$. A flat torus, resulting from the identification of the opposite sides of a Euclidean parallelogram, is a simple example of polyhedral surface. In a first part, we adapt the proof of Burago and Zalgaller, which is partially non-constructive, to produce PL isometric embeddings of flat tori. Our implementation produces embeddings with a huge number of vertices, moreover distinct for every flat torus. In a second part, based on another construction of Zalgaller (2000) and on recent works by Arnoux et al. (2021), we exhibit a universal triangulation with 2434 triangles which can be embedded linearly on each triangle in order to realize the metric of any flat torus.

Abstract:In this note we prove that any minimal $2$-torus in $S^4$ has Morse index at least $6$, with equality if and only if it is congruent to the Clifford torus in some great $S^3\subset S^4$.For a minimal $2$-torus in $S^n$ with vanishing Hopf differential, we show that its index is at least $n+3$, and that this estimate is sharp: the equilateral $2$-torus fully embedded in $S^5\subset S^n$ as a homogeneous minimal surface in $S^n$ has index exactly $n+3$.

Towards Characterization of 5-List-Colorability of Toroidal Graphs

Abstract:Through computer-assisted enumeration, we list minimal obstructions for 5-choosability of graphs on the torus with the following additional property: There exists a cyclic system of non-contractible triangles around the torus where the consecutive triangles are at distance at most four. This condition is satisfied by all previously known obstructions, and we verify that there are no additional obstructions with this property. This supports the conjecture that a toroidal graph is 5-choosable if and only if it is 5-colorable.

Surfaces in The Tesseract

Abstract:How can we visualize all the surfaces that can be made from the faces of the tesseract? In recent work, Aveni, Govc, and Roldán showed that the torus and the sphere are the only closed surfaces that can be realized by a subset of two-dimensional faces of the tesseract. They also gave an exhaustive list of all the isomorphic types of embeddings of these two surfaces. Here, we generate 3D models of all these surfaces. We also exhibit, with the help of some hyper-ants, the minimum realization of the Möbius strip on the tesseract.

Abstract:Graphs that are critical (minimal excluded minors) for embeddability in surfaces are studied. In Part I, it was shown that graphs that are critical for embeddings into surfaces of Euler genus k or for embeddings into nonorientable surface of genus k are built from 3-connected components, called hoppers and cascades. In Part II, all cascades for Euler genus 2 are classified. As a consequence, the complete list of obstructions of connectivity 2 for embedding graphs into the Klein bottle is obtained.

Examples of topologically unknotted tori

Abstract:We show that certain smooth tori with group $\mathbb{Z}$ in $S^4$ have exteriors with standard equivariant intersection forms, and so are topologically unknotted. These include the turned 1-twist-spun tori in the 4-sphere constructed by Boyle, the union of the genus one Seifert surface of Cochran and Davis that has no slice derivative with a ribbon disc, and tori with precisely four critical points whose middle level set is a 2-component link with vanishing Alexander polynomial. This gives evidence towards the conjecture that all $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces in $S^4$ are topologically unknotted, which is open for genus one and two. It is unclear whether these tori are smoothly unknotted, except for tori with four critical points whose middle level set is a split link. The double cover of $S^4$ branched along any of these surfaces is a potentially exotic copy of $S^2 \times S^2$, and, in the case of turned twisted tori, we show they cannot be distinguished from $S^2 \times S^2$ using Seiberg-Witten invariants.

Abstract:We characterize the actions of compact tori on smooth closed manifolds for which the orbit space is a topological manifold (either closed or with boundary). For closed manifolds, the result was originally proved by Styrt in 2009. We give a new proof for closed manifolds which is also applicable to manifolds with boundary. In our arguments, we use the result of Provan and Billera who characterized matroid complexes which are pseudomanifolds. We study the combinatorial structure of torus actions whose orbit spaces are manifolds. In two appendix sections, we give an overview of two theories related to our work. The first one is the combinatorial theory of Leontief substitution systems from mathematical economics. The second one is the topological Kaluza–Klein model of Dirac's monopole studied by Atiyah. The aim of these sections is to draw some bridges between disciplines and motivate further studies in toric topology.

Abstract:Ivansic proved that there is a link $L$ of five tori in $S^4$ with hyperbolic complement. We describe $L$ explicitly and study its properties, and discover that $L$ is in many aspects similar to the Borromean rings in $S^3$. In particular the following hold: (1) Any two tori in $L$ are unlinked, but three are not; (2) The complement $M=S^4\setminus L$ is integral arithmetic hyperbolic; (3) The symmetry group of $L$ acts $k$-transitively on its components for all $k$; (4) The double branched covering over $L$ has geometry $\mathbb H^2 \times \mathbb H^2$; (5) The fundamental group of $M$ has a nice presentation via commutators; (6) The Alexander ideal is explicit; (7) Every class $x\in H^1(M, \mathbb Z)=\mathbb Z^5$ with $x_i\neq 0$ is represented by a perfect circle-valued Morse function; (8) By longitudinal Dehn surgery along $L$ we get a closed 4-manifold with fundamental group $\mathbb Z^5$; (9) The link $L$ can be put in perfect position. This leads also to the first descriptions of a cusped hyperbolic 4-manifold as a complement of tori in $\mathbb R \mathbb P^4$ and of some explicit Lagrangian tori in the product of two surfaces of genus two.

Abstract:We determine the locally flat cobordism distance between torus knots with small and large braid index, up to high precision. Here small means 2, 3, 4, or 6. As an application, we derive a surprising fact about torus knots that are met along the way of almost minimal cobordisms between two-stranded torus knots and the trivial knot.
