Abstract:Cells fate is controlled by various physical and chemical factors containing wettability, electronegativity, roughness and chemical groups. The behaviors of human hepatoma (HepG2) cells cultured on surfaces with different hydrophobicity-hydrophilicity were influenced by several terminal chemical groups including methyl (-CH3), amino (-NH2) and carboxyl (-COOH). The -CH3 surfaces revealed hydrophobicity with a contact angle 79 degrees compared with the other two chemical surfaces. A significantly higher rate (56.37%) of cell apoptosis on the -CH3 surfaces was discovered due to a low rate of cell proliferation and the poor morphology of cell adhesion, while a lower rate of cell apoptosis was obtained on the -NIH2 and -COOH surfaces due to a high rate of cell proliferation and the morphology of cell adhesion with the flattened shape. The introduction of chemical groups to biomaterial surfaces presented an approach to control cancer cells fate including its adhesion, proliferation and apoptosis.
